Brazil’s Boutique Filmes, whose 2016 series “3%” was Netflix’s first big non-English-language international breakout ever, is teaming to produce “O Mistério do Cinco Estrelas” with Portugal’s Ukbar Filmes (“Silent Cargo”) and director Diego Freitas.

Adapting celebrated Brazilian writer Marco Rey’s “O Mistério do Cinco Estrelas” is a murder-mystery set in a luxury hotel.

Announced on the first day of Brazil’s Rio2C where Boutique Filmes’ founder-producer Tiago Mello will serve as a mentor on May 28, “O Mistério do Cinco Estrelas” marks the second of two movies from Boutique announced in the space of two days. On Tuesday, Boutique unveiled “O Gênio do Crime,” a co-production with Globo Filmes which follows the adventures of Gordo’s Gang, a group of children who decide to investigate a criminal mastermind forging World Cup sticker albums. Paris Filmes is set to release in Brazil.

The four projects are all in production and the streamer, keen to underscore its contribution to Brazilian cinema and the local production biz, was quick to note they are filming across four Brazilian states.

Rafael Vitti and canine star Amendoim will appear in Caramelo, billed as a heartwarming drama that pays tribute to a Brazilian cultural symbol, the stray mutt. Filmed in São Paulo, the story follows Pedro, an ambitious chef whose life is upended by unexpected diagnosis. With the help of a stray four-legged friend, he embarks on an emotional journey.

Exclusive: Netflix Brazil is bringing Paulo Coelho’s The Pilgrimage to the screen. The streamer has greenlit a film adaptation of the Brazilian author’s novel, which will shoot in Brazil and Spain.

The commission was announced during Netflix’s session at the Rio2C market in Brazil and Coelho shared the news in a video message for attendees. Rio based Migdal Filmes will produce.

The Pilgrimage, first published in 1987, is one of Coelho’s early novels. In the book, he recounts a journey across Spain on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. He is accompanied by a spiritual guide and mentor and the novel deals with the main protagonist’s quest for spiritual learning and fulfilment.

Another adaptation in the works for Netflix hails from Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles and his son Quico Meirelles. They will jointly helm a miniseries based on Edyr Augusto’s novel Pssica.

Despite reports that audiences are losing interest in sex scenes, the Netflix viewership charts are preaching the opposite. A Brazilian erotic thriller called "Burning Betrayal" recently hit the streaming platform, and is popping up on the top 10 charts across the globe. Perhaps it's the result of "Fair Play" dominating the charts at the end of September 2023, motivating viewers to look for even more tantalizing thrills. "Burning Betrayal" more than delivers on eroticism, as the first five minutes of the film boldly features graphic sex scenes, presented in a way that tricks the brain into thinking they might not be simulated.

Directed by Diego Freitas ("Beyond the Universe") and adapted from Sue Hecker's novel "O Lado Bom de Ser Traída" (rough translation: "The Good Side of Being Betrayed"), the film follows Babi (Giovanna Lancellotti), a successful accountant soon to be married, but feeling like she hasn't yet lived her life.

Henry Zaga, the actor known for roles in “Teen Wolf,” “13 Reasons Why” and “The New Mutants,” is playing the leading man in Netflix’s upcoming Brazilian romantic comedy “Depois do Universo.”

Giulia Be, a singer who was nominated for best new artist at this year’s Latin Grammys, is starring alongside Zaga.

Diego Freitas wrote and directed “Depois do Universo,” which translates to “Beyond the Universe.” It centers on Nina (Be), a talented pianist who has lupus, an autoimmune disease that attacks her kidney. She forges an unexpected yet strong connection with Gabriel (Zaga), one of the doctors on the team who takes care of her and later gives her to confidence to play on stage with a huge orchestra in São Paulo. According to Netflix, the film’s main message is: “Living a great love is worth it, for as long as it takes.”

Netflix has set Henry Zaga and Giulia Be to star in the new Brazilian rom-com, Beyond the Universe, which starts shooting this month in São Paulo. The film is written and directed by Diego Freitas and will premiere on the platform in 2022.João Miguel, Othon Bastos, Rita Assemany, Leo Bahia, Viviane Araújo, Isabel Fillardis, Adriana Lessa, Denise Del Vecchio and João Côrtes are also on board.

The story follows a pianist Nina (Be) who must overcome the challenges of dealing with lupus, an autoimmune disease that can attack any part of the body – the kidney, in her case.
