Monarch Media To Adapt Christian Coming-Of-Age Film ‘A Week Away’ For TV With Carlos PenaVega, Leigh-Allyn Baker & More Set To Star
Image
Exclusive: Monarch Media is adapting its Christian coming-of-age romance film A Week Away into a TV series starring Antonio Cipriano, Cozi Zuehlsdorff, David Koechner, Leigh-Allyn Baker, Sacha Carlson, Ava Jean, Haven Greene, Jason Marsden and Carlos PenaVega.

The series is set to be distributed by Angel Studios. Alan Powell, founding member of Christian rock group Anthem Lights and co-writer of the original film, has been tapped as the showrunner. He will also pen the series with Kali Bailey and Zuehlsdorff.

Similar to the film, which launched on Netflix in 2021, A Week Away: The Series follows a group of kids as they embark on a summer at Camp Aweegaway — a Christian camp filled with adventure, friendships, and unexpected self-discovery.

Production will take place at the same location as the original film, Nashville’s Camp Widjiwagan.

“A Week Away has been a very personal endeavor for me from the beginning,” said Powell.

‘A Week Away’ Review: Faith-Based ‘High School Musical’ Clone Sticks to the Status Quo
Image
Say you’re a wild, wayward but ultimately gold-hearted teen who gets busted for attempting to steal a cop car, and your weary, exasperated but ultimately on-your-side counselor offers you a choice of correctional penalty: an extended spell in juvenile hall, or one summer of singing, swimming and mild soul-searching at a Christian youth camp. Which do you choose? If it seems a no-brainer, the achievement of “A Week Away” is to make us collectively wonder, after 90 minutes of aggressively wholesome hijinks, if juvie would be so bad after all. A purposeful, programmatic attempt by Netflix to encroach on both the faith-based market and the Disney Plus demo, this innocuous but character-free tuner shamelessly copies and crosses the formulae of “High School Musical” and “Camp Rock” down to the last, sequel-prompting detail.

What director Roman White’s film neglects to do is update those Noughties tween touchstones in any way,...

Netflix's A Week Away Trailer Has David Koechner Changing Teen Lives at Summer Camp
Image
Netflix has released a trailer for A Week Away, a new musical set to debut next month. The streaming service acquired the global rights to the movie last year, which comes from director Roman White, known for his music video work with artists such as Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber. For his upcoming feature, White partnered with comedy icon David Koechner and a young cast led by Kevin Quinn for a week at summer camp filled with music and romance.

The trailer kicks off with a troubled teen named Will Hawkins, played by Kevin Quinn, arriving for a week away at church camp. He is, as one might expect, not thrilled by the prospect. David Koechner then explains to him the meaning of the camp's name, "Aweegaway," which signals that some people are just a week away from an experience that can change their life. That's when Will meets Avery,...

Netflix Nabs Faith-Based Musical ‘A Week Away’ With Bailee Madison & Sherri Shepherd
A Week Away (2021)
Adding to its growing slate of family-friendly films, Netflix has secured the global distribution rights to A Week Away, the faith-based musical starring The Good Witch’s Bailee Madison, Kevin Quinn (Adventures in Babysitting), Sherri Shepherd (Ride Along 2) and David Koechner (Anchorman).

Based on an original idea by Alan Powell and directed by Roman White, the pic centers around Will Hawkins (Quinn), a troubled teen who has a run-in with the law that puts him at an important crossroad: go to juvenile detention or attend a Christian summer camp. At first a fish-out-of-water, Will opens his heart, discovers love with a camp regular (Madison), and a sense of belonging in the last place he expected to find it.

Additional cast includes Jahbril Cook, Kat Conner Sterling, and Iain Tucker. The film, which was shot in Nashville, will feature reimagined songs from some of the biggest hits in Contemporary Christian...
