‘The Last Rifleman’ Review: Pierce Brosnan Proves Poignant in a Nostalgia-Heavy World War II Story
Image
An amalgam of a road trip dramedy, an emotional memory piece and a nostalgic look at the glory of World War II, “The Last Rifleman” wants to be many things. Alas, Kevin Fitzpatrick’s script fails to give any of these threads the dramatic heft or the character specification they require. Terry Loane directs all of it with a smooth but rather indifferent hand, unable to overcome the script’s limitations. As the veteran referred to by the title, Pierce Brosnan becomes the main reason to watch.

Brosnan is 92-year-old Artie Crawford, living in a care home in Northern Ireland while having poignant and unsettling flashbacks to World War II, when he fought alongside his best friend and fell in love with the woman he eventually married. Facing the end of life, he decides to go back to Normandy to visit the place that haunts his dreams. Despite the distractingly...

"That's the thing about folks like us, Artie. We're all living with ghosts." Samuel Goldwyn Films in the US has revealed a new US trailer for the drama titled The Last Rifleman, made by filmmaker Terry Loane. This already opened in the UK last year - we posted the first trailer almost a year ago but it's only opening in the US now. Another patriotic "never forget!" story about old WWII veterans – this film tells the exact same story as The Great Escaper with Michael Caine. The same exact characters and everything. A WWII veteran escapes his care home in Northern Ireland and embarks on an arduous but inspirational journey to France to attend the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, finding the courage to face the ghosts of his past. The film stars Pierce Brosnan (in prosthetics) as 92 & 3/4-years-old Artie Crawford, Clemence Poesy, John Amos, Jürgen Prochnow, Claire Rafferty,...

Pierce Brosnan goes Awol as an elderly soldier aims to be remembered before time runs out in The Last Rifleman trailer
Image
In a fast-moving, ever-evolving world plagued by struggles and sensationalism, it’s easy to forget the sacrifices made by people belonging to an older generation. Many young people have no appreciation for the trauma endured by soldiers of near-forgotten wars. They are too busy stunting for likes and subscribers while desperately craving the approval of strangers who could care less. However, those who fought for freedom remember the deafening bomb blasts, burying friends far too soon, and what the word honor truly represents. In Samuel Goldwyn Films‘s The Last Rifleman trailer, Pierce Brosnan plays a WWII veteran determined to return to Ireland on the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, but does he still have what it takes to make the journey?

Terry Loane directs The Last Rifleman from a screenplay by Kevin Fitzpatrick (The Last Letter). Inspired by a true story, Brosnan plays Artie Crawford, a World War...

10 Great Shows You Can Binge in 1 Day
Image
A great TV show can come in so many different forms and capture audiences' hearts for various reasons. The likes of Cheers was a much-loved sitcom that became a comfort for viewers. Other shows, like Game of Thrones, are epic in their telling of fantasy stories that take audiences to a completely different world. However, these long-running shows aren't ones that can be binged in one day.

The length of a show doesn't determine how brilliant it will be. Some that are shorter hold up just as well as those with multiple seasons spread over a few years. The ones that have less episodes are far easier to watch in one day, but which ones are actually worth giving up a whole day for?

‘In the Land of Saints and Sinners’ Review: Liam Neeson Takes His Particular Set of Skills Back to Ireland for a Fanciful Thriller
Image
It’s only been six months since the release of Liam Neeson’s last film, which means theaters are overdue for another thriller led by the prolific star. His latest vehicle, “In the Land of Saints and Sinners,” arrives with an unusual distinction: Directed by Robert Lorenz, the film premiered in Venice a month before another Neeson movie, the maligned bomb-threat thriller “Retribution,” hit U.S. screens. Being selected by such a festival lends ”Saints and Sinners” a whiff of prestige, which it decidedly earns. In fact, the film practically resembles a “one for me” endeavor for the star, with its windswept Irish landscapes and thoughtful reserve, putting the actor among an ensemble of his fellow countrymen and providing the performances room to find poignancy.

The story opens with its most suspenseful action: a bombing by an Ira platoon in Belfast that accidentally kills a group of young children, setting...

10 Actresses We Want To See In Yorgos Lanthimos’ Next Movie
Image
Lanthimos' dynamic filmmaking complements actresses open to experimenting within fantastical yet brutal worlds of hidden human experiences. Actress Anya-Taylor Joy would benefit from Lanthimos' unorthodox style and bring in a wider audience for his upcoming project. Rachel Sennot's potential to capture comedy and drama makes her a perfect fit for Lanthimos' films, providing vital moments of levity.

Yorgos Lanthimos is rumored to have another movie in the works, and for his upcoming project, many talented actresses deserve the chance to work with him. Two of the Best Actress winners at the Oscars in recent years have won for their portrayal of characters in a film directed by Lanthimos. Although no one director's movie is a path to accolades, his brand of filmmaking meshes well with actresses who aren't afraid of experimenting and exploring hidden worlds.

Within the fantastical yet brutal worlds he creates, there is a deep understanding of the human experience.

Pierce Brosnan Is Unrecognizable In Character For His Upcoming War Film ‘The Last Rifleman’
Image
Pierce Brosnan looks unrecognizable as the D-Day veteran, Artie Crawford, for the upcoming Sky Cinema film, The Last Rifleman, in a newly released photo.

With the help of prosthetics and a gray wig, the 70-year-old actor had been given the appearance of a 92-year-old man.

Brosnan’s character wears a uniform covered in war medals while also using a walking stick.

The character was inspired by the experiences of the late Royal Navy Lieutenant Bernard Jordan.

In June 2014, this veteran became famous for escaping his care home at 89 years of age just so he could commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day Normandy landings.

Jordan lied to the staff by stating that he was just “‘popping down to the shops.'”

He made it to France by taking a train at Brighton Railway station to Portsmouth before taking a ferry to France.

The World War II veteran managed to attend the anniversary.

‘In the Land of Saints & Sinners’ Review: Liam Neeson’s Gravitas Can’t Save This Barrow Full of Irish Clichés
Image
The paddywhackery’s as thick as the Oirish brogues and flavorful caricatures in Robert Lorenz’s In the Land of Saints & Sinners, a deadly serious thriller about violence and redemption in which a local lush pauses to grab his pint as gunfire tears up the village pub. Not since the merry blarney of Wild Mountain Thyme has a movie leaned so hard into Emerald Isle stereotypes, which makes it remarkable that Liam Neeson as a pipe-smoking, Dostoevsky-reading assassin manages to play it straight. Kerry Condon as an Ira spitfire with a fondness for the C-word adds some interest, but this is overwritten, overripe and likely destined to be streaming fodder.

While the film is set in 1974 when The Troubles were still raging, that bitter political conflict is merely background wallpaper for a formulaic faux-Western in the predictable script written by Mark Michael McNally and Terry Loane, which loads up...

Inside the 70mm Western Halyna Hutchins Shot Before Her Death — and Her Director’s Attempts to Finish It
Image
In October 2021, much of the world heard about the tragic fate of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was killed when actor and producer Alec Baldwin discharged a firearm on the set of the movie “Rust” in New Mexico.

However, that project was not the only undertaking that the 42-year-old Ukrainian Dp had been working on at the time of her death. In September 2020, Hutchins joined director Dennis Hauck in Ireland for the production of a still-untitled 19th century period piece. Now, Hauck is trying to finish the work they started together.

“She was definitely one of those DPs that lived and breathed filmmaking,” Hauck said in a phone interview with IndieWire. “She had no ego. She just wanted to talk to everybody and learn everything she could.”

Hauck, who previously directed John Hawkes in the 2015 detective drama “Too Late,” serves as the sole producer of his second feature but described Hutchins as a key collaborator.
