FX’s New Sitcom ‘Adults’ Is A Very Good, Very Silly Time
Image
The cold open of FX’s new sitcom Adults shows its cast of adorable twentysomethings in a subway cuddle puddle, relying on each other to keep track of their keys and bag and bragging about getting discounts via suggestive Instagram DMs with the Papa John’s account. Later in the episode, one of the housemates tries to get her way by putting on a flirtatious persona called “Titty Baby”; another doesn’t have a checking account or know his Social Security number. Yet, despite a cast of characters I should find extremely grating, Adults is a hangout show I really enjoyed hanging out with.

Like all the best shows in this sitcom sub-category, Adults — which premieres next Wednesday on FX before dropping its whole eight-episode season on Hulu the following day — barely has a premise. Samir (Malik Elassal) lives in his childhood home in “the shit taint of Queens.” His...

“Brian” also stars Randall Park, Natalie Morales and Edi Patterson.

“Directing this project was intensely personal, as I saw so much of my own struggles with anxiety and self-discovery reflected in the story,” Ropp said in a statement Monday. “Through Brian’s journey, I wanted to capture the subtle, often messy process of growing up and finding one’s voice in a world...

The Line Review: Alex Wolff leads a dark and disturbing drama about college fraternities
Image
Plot: Tom is a scholarship student desperate to break free from his working-class background. He is charmed by the prestigious Kna fraternity’s promises of high social status and alumni connections that open doors. But upon beginning a romance with Annabelle, a classmate outside of his social circle, and the manipulative schemes of his fraternity president unfolding during the hazing of new members, Tom finds himself ensnared in a perilous game of ambition and loyalty.

Review: Few cultures have proven as toxic as fraternities and sororities. Over the years, hazing has transformed from comedy fodder in films like Animal House and Revenge of the Nerds to the notorious stuff of headline news. Countless frats across the United States have been shuttered due to criminal activity that has resulted in jail time and even deaths. The Line is a story that is a damning indictment of frat life and the personalities...

The Fallout Ending & Real Meaning Explained
Image
The Fallout's ending highlights the lasting impact of trauma from school shootings, showing recovery is far from linear. Director Megan Park deliberately ends the film ambiguously to reflect the ongoing issue of school violence and trauma recovery. Vada's journey in The Fallout emphasizes that healing from trauma is a complex process that can never fully erase painful memories.

The Fallout ending is notably devastating as the film is an emotional drama dealing with the aftermath of a school shooting. The Fallout follows survivor Vada (Jenna Ortega), and her struggle to overcome trauma. The Fallout ends with a tragic reminder that such emotional wounds can never truly be overcome when acts of mass violence remain common. Written and directed by Megan Park, The Fallout has received acclaim for its writing and direction and a cast of talented young actors, headlined by Ortega.

The Fallout introduces its characters with an...

The Way Back Cast & Character Guide
Image
The The Way Back cast goes beyond lead actor Ben Affleck. The movie stars dramatic actors and comedy actors alike, including Al Madrigal and Janina Gavankar. The Way Back also boasts a robust ensemble cast featuring memorable performers from Percy Jackson and The Thing.

The Way Back cast extends far beyond its lead star Ben Affleck. The 2020 basketball drama was directed by Gavin O'Connor (reuniting with Affleck after helming his action-thriller The Accountant) from a screenplay by Brad Ingelsby, who is the son of a basketball coach. The movie, which cost roughly $25 million, suffered financially in its theatrical release, only earning $15.5 million because it was released shortly before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down theaters worldwide. However, it was well received by both critics and audiences, earning 84% scores from both groups on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Way Back was one of a crop of titles that were released on premium VOD just weeks after their initial release.

Gregg Araki at an event for Mysterious Skin (2004)
SXSW Review: Only the Good Survive Sets Sidney Flanigan in a Retro Horror in the Age of QAnon
Gregg Araki at an event for Mysterious Skin (2004)
For movie nerds like yours truly who grew up in the late 90s and early 2000s on films like Gregg Araki’s The Doom Generation and Rob Schmidt’s Crime and Punishment in Suburbia, an outrageous horror comedy with nods to QAnon is an easy movie to love. Thankfully, Dutch Southern’s quirky Only the Good Survive rises the occasion. In the days before streaming, this SXSW premiere feels like one of those late-night movies about which word spread amongst kids around your high school lunch table.

Never Rarely Sometimes Always break-out Sidney Flanigan plays Brea, an adopted young woman separated from her sister who is in search of both her family and a family. She finds herself on the wrong side of an interrogation table as the local sheriff for this backwater, Cole Mack (played by ’90s indie film staple Fred Weller), tries piecing together the sordid state of...

Only The Good Survive Review: Genre-Bending Crime Saga Is A Breath Of Fresh Air [SXSW 2023]
Image
One of the best things about film festivals is arguably the pre-festival programming website. They often don't have a lot of details about what you can expect from a certain movie, which can sometimes be used to a film's advantage. A movie's description can be the most thread-bare description possible, but that doesn't necessarily mean that's all it has to offer. What lies beyond those two or three sentences could be something that shouldn't be relegated to tiny theaters and hushed whispers.

When you look at the SXSW Film & TV Festival program, you'll find the description of "Only The Good Survive" only really describes part of the movie. Sure, it does center around a back-and-forth confrontation between a young drifter (Sidney Flanigan) and a lots-of-nonsense sheriff (Frederick Weller). That might not be the most original of ideas, but the way that writer-director Dutch Southern portrays this twisty crime caper certainly is.

How to Watch ‘The Greatest Beer Run Ever’: Is the Zac Efron Movie Streaming?
Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali in Green Book : Sur les routes du sud (2018)
“Green Book” director Peter Farrelly returns after his film won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2019 for a new adventure: “The Greatest Beer Run Ever” starring Zac Efron and Russell Crowe. Farrelly recently sat down with TheWrap in its Toronto International Film Festival Studio with Shutterstock to talk about the true story at the heart of his upcoming film.

“Somebody sent me a 12-minute documentary that Andrew Muscato did about the greatest beer run ever, and I just couldn’t believe what I was looking at, that this guy actually went to Vietnam during the war, somehow found his way around the country and dropped off beers with people and happened to get there right before the Tet Offensive. I was like, ‘That’s unbelievable,’” he told TheWrap’s Brian Welk after the movie’s world premiere on Sept. 13.

Fans of Zac Efron, Russell Crowe and/or Farrelly may be...

"Smuggling beer into a war zone? That's not the smartest thing I've ever heard of." Apple has revealed the first official trailer for The Greatest Beer Run Ever, which is pretty much the perfect title to get your attention. This is premiering at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival soon before Apple releases it in theaters and streaming on Apple TV+ later in September. Zac Efron stars as Chickie, who wants to support his friends fighting in Vietnam, so he does something wild and perhaps totally insane—personally bring them American beer. Peter Farrelly
The first trailer for Peter Farrelly’s “The Greatest Beer Run Ever” proudly proclaims that the guy in the film played by Zac Efron “actually did this” as he sprints through an active war zone in Vietnam carrying a sack of cold brews and cheap American lagers.

“The Greatest Beer Run” ever is based on the true story of a man named Chickie Donohue, who felt burned by the protests at home over the Vietnam War and decided he wanted to show his support to his buddies and neighbors overseas by tracking each of them down in Vietnam and bringing them each a beer. And yes, you can tell he’s serious about that plan.

“The man’s stoned sober. That’s maybe his fifth beer, tops,” a bartender played by Bill Murray says in the trailer.

‘The Fallout’ star Jenna Ortega on why her character’s devastating, emotional journey ‘does not end’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
In the South by Southwest breakout “The Fallout,” which was released on HBO Max on January 27, Jenna Ortega takes on her first leading role in a film. The feature film debut for writer/director Megan Park, the coming-of-age drama follows the actor as Vada Cavell, a high schooler who navigates the devastating, emotional fallout from a deadly shooting at her school and the ripple effect the latter has on her relationships with friends and family. Even though Ortega understood the responsibility she had as No. 1 on the call sheet in terms of setting the tone on set, she “didn’t perceive it too differently [from] being any other number on the call sheet,” as she tells Gold Derby in a new webchat (watch our exclusive video interview above). “The weight of No. 1 wasn’t necessarily so much in place on set, I feel like the weight was more in performance and...

‘The Fallout’ Trailer: Jenna Ortega Stars in School Shooting Drama for the Instagram Age
Image
Megan Park’s heart-wrenching directorial debut “The Fallout” shows how a seemingly normal day in the life of high schoolers is swiftly destroyed by a horrific shooting — and how that shooting is then refracted through social media. The film won the Audience Award for Narrative Feature at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival, and arrives on HBO Max January 27. “The Fallout” also features a leading turn from “Scream” breakout Jenna Ortega, starring opposite Maddie Ziegler. Watch the trailer below.

Jenna Ortega stars as Vada, a high schooler in emotional freefall after a school shooting alters her friends, family, and other relationships in her orbit. Others affected by the shooting act out in different ways to cope with their pain. Once-silly Nick (Will Ropp) becomes an overnight sensation as a victim’s advocate, while Quinton (left injured by the shooting) proves to be the most surprisingly emotionally stable. Jenna Ortega & Maddie Ziegler in Heartfelt Drama 'The Fallout' Trailer
Maddie Ziegler and Jenna Ortega in The Fallout (2021)
"What are you feeling right now?" "I feel... mad." Warner Bros has unveiled an official trailer for the indie film The Fallout, marking the feature directorial debut of actress Megan Park. This first premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival last year, and will be debuting streaming on HBO Max later this month. The film deals with the "fallout" of a school shooting - focusing on one young student named Vada who struggles with all the overwhelming emotions afterwards. Relationships with her family, friends and view of the world are forever altered. In the process, she befriends another student named Mia, who she had never been friends with before. Jenna Ortega co-stars with Maddie Ziegler, and a cast including Niles Fitch, Will Ropp, John Ortiz, Julie Bowen, and Shailene Woodley. This and Mass are the only films so far that honestly and appropriately deal with the crisis of school shootings in America.

SXSW Review: The Fallout is a Laser-Focused Teenage Character Study Unpacking Trauma
Quite literally saved by her little sister Amelia, school shooting survivor Vada (Jenna Ortega) is thrust out of her seemingly normal life into an extended period of grief and guilt in Megan Park’s often moving drama The Fallout. Covering the same ground as many fiction and non-fiction works about grieving and action in the wake of tragedy, Park’s picture feels somewhat more nuanced, capturing the rhythms of upper middle-class suburban life as Vada finds herself drawn to a fellow survivor Mia (Maddie Zeigler) who just happened to be in the same girl’s bathroom at the time of the shooting.

The incident takes place off screen as Vada leaves class when Amelia (Lumi Pollack) calls to let her know she’s gotten her first period and doesn’t know what to do. While hiding in a stall, a shooting victim Quinton (Niles Fitch) runs into the restroom seeking...

‘The Fallout’: A School Shooting Makes for an Emotional Heavyweight [SXSW Review]
Image
A teenage Vada (Jenna Ortega) arrives at her high school with her best friend Nick (Will Ropp). The coarse Vada isn’t part of the in-crowd. She sports oversized t-shirts, basketball shorts, and sneakers. She leaves during class, skittering to the bathroom to take a phone call from her younger sister Amelia (Lumi Pollack). There she crosses paths with Mia Reed (Maddie Ziegler) — a popular arresting dancer on Instagram now contouring in the mirror for picture day.

‘The Fallout’ Review: Megan Park Takes the Pulse of a Shell-Shocked Generation
Image
Where previous generations preferred neatly resolved stories, embracing films that reassured them that everything was under control, Gen Z movies aren’t afraid to leave things messy, as if to say it’s Ok to feel overwhelmed. The same goes for television offerings such as “Euphoria” and “I May Destroy You,” which recognize that the world is a complex, flawed and deeply unfair place. Rather than sitting back and letting the more proactive, goal-oriented protagonists of classical Hollywood work out their problems, they invite audiences to see themselves on-screen, or else to identify with imperfect people.

Megan Park’s stellar feature debut, respectful how-to-deal drama “The Fallout,” marks yet another important step in this direction — away from story toward state of mind — a precedent for which can be found in mood-centric indies like “Garden State” and “Donnie Darko” almost two decades earlier. It’s a remarkable accomplishment: a film with...

Megan Park’s Heartbreaking School Shooting Drama ‘The Fallout’ Reorients Trauma for the Instagram Generation
Image
Vada’s life doesn’t look that much different than that of any other American teenager: She loves spending time with her snarky best pal, she’s not super-serious about school but she’s still smart, she thinks her parents are kind of square but knows they love her, Starbucks is a major part of her diet, and much of her existence plays out on social media. Today, however, Vada’s life is going to change forever. In “The Fallout,” Vada (Jenna Ortega) starts another seemingly normal day, only for it to be destroyed by a horrific school shooting.

Park, an actress and singer who has steadily built up her directing bonafides with a variety of music videos (including Billie Eilish’s “Watch”) and a pair of short films, makes a big leap with “The Fallout,” taking on a major emotional undertaking for her first feature. It works. Vada is...

Silk Road Review: Ross Ulbricht Drama Becomes a Tired Boomer vs. Millennial Diatribe
Ross Ulbricht (Nick Robinson) wanted to change the world. And he did. Whether you believe it was for the better (bringing the Dark Web and Tor into the mainstream via his anonymous marketplace Silk Road) or worse, the infrastructure he utilized coupled with the advantages afforded by Bitcoin ignited a firestorm of possibilities. Because at the center of it all was a desire to adhere to a Libertarian set of philosophies that shook the system and evaded the state. That the story has subsequently been reduced to “drugs-by-mail” is thus as much an in-road towards entertaining drama as a smokescreen away from governmental overreach.

It’s the latter that interested director Alex Winter enough to focus his documentary Deep Web on the whole issue rather than merely Ulbricht himself. The young man who went by “Dread Pirate Roberts” on his website was still a centerpiece being that he provided a...

‘Silk Road’ trailer: Nick Robinson and Jason Clarke’s stunning dialogues
Image
'Silk Road' trailer has arrived and it looks promising.

Lionsgate has released the official trailer for the upcoming crime thriller film 'Silk Road' featuring Nick Robinson and Jason Clarke in the lead.

Inspired by larger-than-life actual events, the film is based on Rolling Stone's 2014 article titled 'Dead End on Silk Road: Internet Crime Kingpin Ross

Ulbricht’s Big Fall' written by David Kushner and follows the rise and fall of the titular infamous website “that sent a seismic shock through the World Wide Web,” reports geektyrant.

According to the publication, Robinson plays Ross Ulbricht, a young, idealistic, and driven to succeed person who is the founder of the Internet’s first unregulated marketplace: Silk Road, which eventually became a multi-million dollar pipeline for illegal drugs. Jason Clarke takes on the role of Rick Bowden, a disreputable and dangerously unpredictable DEA agent who goes undercover to...
