While Fall 2024 delivered plenty of great episodes for anime fans, audiences also had to contend with some potentially frustrating delays. Now, fan-favorite anime series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? V (DanMachi Season 5) is adding to the season’s woes. The highly anticipated series finale has been postponed indefinitely, with Episode 12 no longer set to air in 2024.
The curtain on Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? V was originally supposed to fall on Dec. 27, but fans will have to wait longer for the series’ dramatic conclusion. Production issues have mired the series, with a statement from the anime's production team earlier this week confirming its indefinite hiatus. For better or worse, isekai is one of the biggest anime genres over the last decade, leading many fans to wonder what the best isekai anime available on streaming are. The genre became famous for showcasing stories of normal people getting transported to fantastical worlds where they're often granted special powers that allow them to save their new world. Though the genre is varied, isekai excels at putting relatable characters in fantastical situations.
With such a large catalog of anime to choose from, it can be difficult to decide which isekai is the best to invest time in, especially when so many series within the genre can have similar-sounding plot lines on the surface. Regardless, there are plenty of isekai worth binge-watching that offer a fun, refreshing spin on the genre. The best isekai anime on streaming shows how broad and varied the genre truly is.

I never dreamed I’d be involved with a show that I watched back as a child like this, so I was overjoyed when I heard I was chosen for the role. The reality didn’t really sink in all the way up to recording sessions, but during the sessions, feeling the staff’s emotions for the show helped my pull myself together. It’s an honor to be involved!

Isekai is a rare genre of anime that gives its characters a chance to get stronger in another world. While they can't do much on Earth, characters like Tanya von Degurechaff can be reincarnated into their new worlds with amazing magical abilities. Other characters, like Ghislaine Dedolida from Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, are already walking armies without the need for an after-death boost. No matter if they're from Earth or the new world, there are some incredibly powerful women in isekai.
Powerful women in isekai animes come in all shapes and sizes. Some are big, powerful sword-swingers who could bisect their enemies in an instant. Others are smaller, letting their magic handle battles for them. The strongest are both, combining rare magical abilities with an insane physical prowess to create the ultimate fighter on any battlefield.

Some anime moments are so shocking, they can barely be explained. Anime can have some of the biggest, most unexpected moments that nobody could have seen coming, either for better, or more often, for worse. Shocking moments in anime are rarely good. Once they happen, it's usually impossible to return to a normal time. Everything changes in shocking anime moments in an instant. Whether Paul Greyrat from Muskhou Tensei wants to save his son or Madara gets betrayed in Naruto: Shippuden, shocking moments can be permanent.
There are countless series willing to push their viewers to their emotional limits. Some shows, like Dragon Ball Z, are relatively straightforward, making their shocking moments hit even harder for their infrequency. No matter how often shocking moments happen, they're always devastating, leaving the main cast of characters with an entirely new situation in their hands.

The most notable trend in recent anime has been the rise of the fantasy isekai series. These series, where regular people get transported to magical sword and sorcery-inspired worlds, have become ubiquitous, with each new anime season featuring at least one show following this template.
As is the norm for fantasy series, most of these shows feature mages, wizards, and other spell casters. In most fantasy isekai stories, the main character or one of their allies usually follows in these magic users' footsteps, learning a multitude of skills and spells as they do. But which of these wizards would make Gandalf proud, and which should stick to card tricks?

Shojo fans know what to expect when they start an anime series. There are certain tropes that are very popular in shojo anime, like tsundere love interests, falling in love for the first time, beach episodes, and gorgeous confidence-building makeovers. These tropes aren't solely in shojo anime, of course, but shojo series tend to portray those tropes in a very certain way.
There are many tropes which are just as popular and present today as they were in classic anime. They are timeless, even if they evolve with the more modern audience. Familiar, well-loved tropes are also comforting to anime fans who like to start a new series with tropes that they've enjoyed before.

Of all the anime genres, isekai are the most infamous and controversial. This is mostly because of their questionable heroes, who can be annoying at best and downright offensive at worst. Although their immaturity can be excused by their target audience's relatively young age, isekai heroes can still be too problematic for their own good.
It should be noted that these isekai heroes aren't problematic simply because they're unlikable, or because they did something wrong. Such detestable choices and traits can drive their stories forward when written well. However, these heroes indulged in their creators' and fans' worst fantasies, and were rewarded for their lack of self-awareness and humanity.

Mushoku Tensei quickly went from being relatively unheard of to one of the most popular isekai franchises. Studio Bind has beautifully elevated the source material to create a modern fantasy classic, focusing on the series' complex worldbuilding and narrative.
However, Mushoku Tensei also has a massive cast of characters, as it follows Rudeus Greyrat's life from birth into becoming a man and even beyond. From adventurer parties to magic students to royalty, Mushoku Tensei has so many characters it's easy for people to lose track. For a long-running series like Mushoku Tensei, a comprehensive guide that keeps track of who's who is a necessity for fans wanting to remain invested.

When people think about where to stream anime movies, Amazon Prime usually isn't the first platform that comes to mind. However, there is a hidden treasure trove of Japanese animation on the platform. The service is also constantly expanding, offering new ways to experience content, and even adding ways to watch things free with ads.
Amazon Prime has highly acclaimed movies like Studio Ghibli's My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service. Anime contains a huge number of genres and Prime provides a gateway to films and shows of every possible description.
Updated by Louis Kemner on January 11th, 2024: Amazon Prime has added classic films like Studio Ghibli projects, but they also have a wide variety of films available from the present and the past. Good news for anime fans! ‘Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy-‘ is gearing up for its second season, and it’s dropping in January 2024. The brilliant minds at J.C. Staff are behind the animation, ensuring we’re in for a visual treat.
For those out of the loop, this anime made waves after its debut in 2021. Kei Azumi’s light novel series inspired it. The title might ring a bell – ‘Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchou.’ Since 2013, AlphaPolis has been treating readers with its publication. Not to mention, Kotora Kino crafts a manga adaptation.
The latest tidbits from the anime’s creators include a fresh visual and trailer. But what truly caught my attention was the addition of 10 cast members. Ai Kakuma will voice Hibiki Otonashi, while Ami Koshimizu will take on Navarre Polar. Chiharu Sawashiro is lending his voice to Belda Nortst Limia, and Natsue Sasamoto will bring life to Yukinatsu Kazusa.

Alright, who’s ready for a movie about making a movie? Pretty tired idea, eh? Sure we’ve seen recent flicks about the making of several classics, from Citizen Kane to Psycho, even The Room. Why there’s now a streaming miniseries about all the effort to get The Godfather made. Well, this flick’s got a couple of twists. First, it’s about a movie that’s not legit (kind of like the Rick Dalton movies of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood). Oh, and here’s the second, really big thing: it’s an animated feature. Specifically, an anime based on a manga originally serialized online. How’s that for “something completely different”. Plus the film title actually refers to this film’s producer, not the director or star, who is known as Pompo The Cinephile.
So, where is she known? Pompo (voiced by Konomi Kohara) is practically...

Gkids has nabbed North American rights to Takayuki Hirao’s indie anime pic Pompo the Cinephile, and will release both the original Japanese-language film (titled Eiga Daisuki Pompo-san) and a new English-language version in U.S. theaters early next year.
Hirao’s ode to filmmaking centers on Pompo, a talented and gutsy producer in the world’s movie-making capital, “Nyallywood.” Although she’s known for B-movies, Pompo one day tells her assistant Gene that he will direct her next script: a delicate drama about an aging and tormented creative genius. But when the production heads towards chaos, can Gene rise to Pompo’s challenge, and succeed as a first-time director?
Pompo the Cinephile hails from the new animation studio, Clap. Its Japanese voice cast includes Hiroya Shimizu, Konomi Kohara, Ai Kakuma, Aiko Otsuka, and Rinka Ōtani. The film was an official selection of the 2021 Fantasia Film Festival and was released in Japan in June.

In the 1950s, Batman was transformed into a variety of beings or wore a colorful assortment of costumes to goose sales. Thankfully, that silliness was retired with the New Look and wasn’t resurrected until the Elseworlds what if stories of the 1990s. That same approach has now crept from the page to the screen with Batman Ninja, out now on DVD from Warner Home Entertainment.
This anime-style adventure comes from director Junpei Mizusaki, (producer of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), working from a script by Kazuki Nakashima and character designs from Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai). As a result, it comes with a strong pedigree for the creative approach.

We’ve long had a soft spot for stories that transplant Batman to different times. The best is probably Gotham By Gaslight, which imagines a Victorian Batman tangling with Jack the Ripper, but we also enjoyed Grant Morrison’s time-hopping miniseries Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne, in which we see Caveman Batman, Witchhunter Batman, Pirate Batman, Cowboy Batman and 30s Gumshoe Batman. So, naturally, we’re over the moon with excitement for Batman Ninja.
