Lindsay Crouse and Joe Mantegna in Engrenages (1987)
Viola Davis and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II to roll the dice for a reimagining of David Mamet’s House of Games
Lindsay Crouse and Joe Mantegna in Engrenages (1987)
Would you like to play a game? No. Not Saw. I’m talking about the House of Games, with Viola Davis and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the feature’s star players. According to Deadline, a reimagining of David Mamet’s 1987 crime thriller is in development at Amazon MGM Studios. In addition to leading the film, Davis will produce through her Juvee Productions studio alongside Julius Tennon, Melanie Clark, and Abdul-Mateen II via his House Eleven10 banner.

In David Mamet’s directorial debut, House of Games, a psychiatrist comes to the aid of a compulsive gambler and is led by a smooth-talking grifter into the shadowy but compelling world of stings, scams, and con men. Mamet wrote the screenplay with Jonathan Katz, while Lindsay Crouse, Joe Mantegna, Mike Nussbaum, and Lilia Skala led the cast.

Viola Davis’ latest feature, G20, featured the Emmy-winning actress as President Danielle Sutton. In the action-packed film,...

Black Panther, Move Over Because Wakanda Just Found Itself a Brand-New Ruler: "Tell Them They Have a New King"
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Ultimate Black Panther #17!Killmonger officially replaces Black Panther as the king of Wakanda. The McU's first Black Panther movie helped the character of Erik Killmonger garner a devoted fanbase, with some even arguing his brief time as king of Wakanda was better than T'Challa's, suggesting Killmonger was Wakanda's rightful king. Marvel Comics opens the door to making a similar case.

Ultimate Black Panther #17 ends with Killmonger taking the throne of Wakanda for himself and Queen Okoye. Throughout the Ultimate Universe's series, Killmonger has been romantically paired with Storm, but this new twist pairs the Okoye and Killmonger as the new rulers of Wakanda in T'Challa's absence.

Unlike in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, T'Challa isn't dead, and so when he returns, readers can expect a true battle for the throne, officially re-establishing Killmonger as a villain.

Marvel Introduces the God of Vibranium As The Progenitor Shakes Up the Cosmos
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Ultimate Black Panther #14! Vibranium lore in Marvel Comics is expanding in ways fans could never have predicted in the new Ultimate Universe, as Black Panther of Earth-6160 is about to come face-to-face with the Progenitor aka the God of Vibranium. Vibranium isn’t just an unbreakable metal capable of absorbing and redistributing all forms of energy like it is in the main Marvel Comics continuity of Earth-616, but is actually something much darker - and terrifyingly familiar.

In Marvel Comics’ solicitation for Ultimate Black Panther #14 by Bryan Hill and Stefano Caselli, fans are given a first-look at the main cover art for the upcoming issue (by artist Stefano Caselli) as well as the comic’s official synopsis.

Who Is The Progenitor? Black Panther’s dangerous reliance on vibranium becomes even more volatile when an ancient spirit attacks Wakanda! Only the Sorcerer Supreme can help T’Challa...

Marvel Reveals Codename of New Sorcerer Supreme, & It's So Much Darker Than "Doctor Strange"
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Ultimate Black Panther #10! For years in Marvel Comics, the title of Sorcerer Supreme has been synonymous with Doctor Strange, but now, that is no longer the case, especially in Marvel’s new Ultimate Universe continuity of Earth-6160. The Ultimate Universe has been steadily introducing variants of classic Marvel heroes and villains, and now, it has introduced its own Sorcerer Supreme. While this universe’s Sorcerer Supreme isn’t Doctor Strange, they are a seriously hardcore replacement.

In Ultimate Black Panther #10 by Bryan Hill and Carlos Nieto, Wakanda is in the grip of a brutal war with practically the rest of Africa. Ra and Khonshu (aka Moon Knight) are members of the Maker’s Council, which is the shadow government that secretly rules the world. Their province is all of Africa, but the one country Ra and Khonshu could never gain control over was Wakanda. However, after...

Night Of The Assassin – Review
Image
Shin-Hyun Joon stars as Inan, in the South Korean action film Night Of The Assassin. Courtesy of WellGoUSA

South Korea has been exporting a lot of high-octane action flicks in the past several years. They tend to emphasize hard-hitting stunts and gritty, dynamic fight choreography, largely eschewing the enhancements (or detriments) of CGI and fanciful wire work. That’s been consistently true for both period pieces and contemporary crime fare. This title, Nightof The Assassin, led me to expect another dose of slam-bang action. The reality turned out to be more contemplative for much of its running time, before wowing viewers with the inevitable climactic battles in grand style.

In this pre-gun era costume drama, Shin-Hyun Joon stars as Inan who is a rural region’s top assassin – all business, efficient, no ideology or emotions. The film opens with his collapsing after another swift success, and learning that he has...
