Smoke season 1 episode 4 recap: Pain is a powerful motivator
Image
This post contains spoilers from Smoke season 1 episode 4 from this point forward.

We all have trauma. That trauma varies from person to person, as does the response to trauma. But for many, trauma is a driver. It can be a driver for good or a driver for ill. For our three central characters in Smoke, all are dealing with past trauma and present trauma that drives their actions. For one of them, it’s in the right direction. Let’s dive into this week’s episode, “Strawberry.”

Anger as a driver

For Dave (Taron Egerton) and Freddy (Ntare Mwine), pain and anger are a driver toward their actions. Both are struggling this week. Both are a powder keg. And both are ready to lash out, especially by the end of this week’s episode.

Freddy has been passed over. He’s sad. Then angry. Then frustrated. He drops in on...

Smoke season 1 episode 3 recap: A slow week in the investigation
Image
This post contains spoilers from Smoke season 1 episode 3 on Apple TV+.

When you have a reveal like we saw at the end of episode 2—where we learned our protagonist Dave (Taron Egerton) is actually an arsonist—it’s natural to wonder what comes next. In the case of Smoke, the new series streaming on Apple TV+, it’s a quiet episode. This week’s installment, “Weird Milk,” is the shortest so far, clocking in at just 42 minutes. While we spend time with all three of our key players, there’s not a lot of forward movement. Let’s dive in and see where we’re headed.

The investigation continues

For Calderone (Jurnee Smollett) the loss of one suspect has clarified her thoughts on the case. We learned at the end of episode 2 that she’s suspected her partner, Dave. But she’s not ready to share her theory with anyone.

‘Smoke’ Review (Apple TV)
Image
Stars: Taron Egerton, Jurnee Smollett, Rafe Spall, Hannah Emily Anderson, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Greg Kinnear, John Leguizamo | Created by Dennis Lehane

Apple TV’s Smoke, from novelist-turned-showrunner Dennis Lehane, arrives with all the hallmarks of prestige TV: moody cinematography, slow-burn pacing, and brimming with self-importance. But peel back the layers of cinematic gloss, and you’re left with a show that mistakes aesthetic fog for narrative depth. This is a series that desperately wants to be profound, yet ends up suffocating under the weight of its own pretension.

Set in the mist-shrouded forests of the Pacific Northwest, Smoke follows an arson investigator and a detective as they hunt for a pair of serial fire-starters. On paper, the premise sounds gripping: an atmospheric crime thriller with psychological depth. In practice, though, the show is more interested in gazing at its own “smoke trails” than in telling a compelling story. Every...

‘Smoke’ Review: Taron Egerton’s Apple Series Is a Sicko Pulp Thriller Driven by Dark Truths
Image
A lone woman is shopping in a crafts store, pushing her half-filled cart lackadaisically down an aisle lined with wooden birdhouses and wicker baskets, when she sniffs the air and stops. Looking up, she sees a curtain of smoke rising toward the rafters. There’s a fire. It’s right in front of her. Then there’s another and another. Suddenly, people are screaming. They rush toward the exit, but this one unfortunate shopper is trapped by the proliferating blaze. Everything in the store is kindling, and the metal shelving hems in what’s becoming a human fire-pit. She runs, she covers her mouth, she crawls, but the smoke is too thick to see through and the heat — my god, the heat — is searing.

When the woman escapes, stumbling into a door that explodes the second she pushes through it, there’s a sense of relief. She’s out. She’s alive.

Smoke season 1 episode 2 recap: The second arsonist isn't who we expected
Image
This post contains spoilers from Smoke season 1 episode 2 from this point forward.

In the second of two episodes of Smoke made available this week, we get a major shakeup. In the pilot, we seemed to be tracking toward a fairly normal police procedural. But this series, from Dennis Lehane, isn’t about what you expect. With this second episode, “Your Happy Makes Me Sad,” we start to see the long game. Let’s dive into a twisty encore.

The manhunt continues in episode 2

As we begin the episode, there are still two serial arsonists. And it seems that both Dave (Taron Egerton) and Calderone (Jurnee Smollett) have made some headway on a different case. Dave managed to track our milk jug arsonist back to the restaurant where his last victims had a date night. Seems seeing other people happy bothers him and fuels his rage. Thanks to the leg work,...

‘Smoke’ Starts Off a Hacky Cop Show — Until It Drops a Three-Alarm Twist
Image
The first episode of Smoke, a new Apple TV+ miniseries about an arson investigator (Taron Egerton) and a cop (Jurnee Smollett) teaming up to catch two unrelated serial arsonists, opens with the dictionary definition of “creativity.” This is the sort of device that suggests anything but creativity is to be found. And for a couple of episodes, the show feels only slightly less hacky than the novel that Egerton’s character, Dave Gudsen, is writing, inspired by his own experiences.

“Of all the elements,” he jots down at one point,...

Smoke TV Review: Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett lead Dennis Lehane’s true crime-inspired thriller
Image
Plot: Inspired by true events, “Smoke” follows a troubled detective and an enigmatic arson investigator as they pursue the trials of two serial arsonists.

Review: The 2023 Apple TV+ limited series Black Bird presented a true crime drama with stellar performances from Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser. Created by acclaimed novelist Dennis Lehane, the series fostered a creative partnership that has led to the new series, Smoke. With Lehane as showrunner and Egerton in the lead alongside Jurnee Smollett, Smoke draws inspiration from the true crime podcast Firebug but expands into an original narrative about dueling arsonists wreaking havoc in the Pacific Northwest while former firefighter Dave Gudsen (Taron Egerton) and detective Michelle Calderone (Jurnee Smollett) try to apprehend the criminals. It is a fascinating drama that draws on Lehane’s skill at chronicling cops and killers, mixed with multiple intricate characters. Smoke is a character study of the highest order,...

‘Smoke’ Review: Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett Make a Begrudging, Dynamic Team in Apple’s Fiery Crime Series
Image
Some fans on social media say looking at a trailer of Apple TV+’s “Smoke” reminds them of the early ‘90s film, “Backdraft.” While the film and the TV series both have fire as a main theme, “Smoke,” is not about saving lives. It’s really about destroying them.

Loosely based on the “Firebug” podcast that tells the story of John Leonard Orr, an arson investigator convicted of having set thousands of fires in the Los Angeles area over approximately two decades, “Smoke” was written by the prolific novelist-turned-screenwriter-turned-tv writer Dennis Lehane. Lehane’s books “Gone Baby Gone,” “Moonlight Mile,” “Shutter Island” and the Oscar-nominated “Mystic River” became movies. He found further success as a staff writer for the Emmy-winning shows “The Wire” and “Boardwalk Empire.” In 2022, Lehane developed the true crime drama (and fan favorite) Blackbird for AppleTV+. Blackbird starred Egerton, Greg Kinnear and Ray Liotta in his last role.

Taron Egerton Watches an Investigation Go Up in ‘Smoke’ in Exhilarating New Apple TV+ Series Trailer
Image
Last year, Taron Egerton took over Netflix with the hit movie Carry-On. This year, the British actor is diving once again into an edge-of-your-seat thriller, but this time in more understated tones. Today, Apple TV+ released the trailer for Smoke, a new investigative series that centers on an investigator who is trying to locate two serial arsonists that are wreaking fiery havoc and challenging the police. The series is set to premiere on June 27.

The trailer for Smoke suggests that the fire is one way to grab the attention of the police, but there's something else brewing that we can't quite put our finger on. This is reflected in Egerton's character, Dave Gudsen, who gets so deeply involved in the mystery that it might bring some permanent consequences for his psyche. In that scenario, it looks like police detective Michelle Calderone (Jurnee Smollett) will be fundamental to keeping Dave grounded during the investigation.

'Bring It Into 2025': Silent Hill Sequel Actor Teases Modernized Version of Pyramid Head in Next Film
Image
Horror fans have been waiting for a proper movie adaptation of Silent Hill2 for almost 25 years now, but it's finally happening. Actor Robert Strange also teased a "cooler, tastier" version of Pyramid Head depicted onscreen.

Fans will soon revisit the Otherworld in Return to Silent Hill, the loose sequel to the 2006 film. As an adaptation of Konami's Silent Hill 2, the movie will flesh out the game's hellscape and doomed characters in live-action. Two Silent Hill films have been released to date, all helmed by director Christophe Gans; the original stuck close to the lore and aesthetic of the games, and based on behind-the-scenes clips, Gans will do the same for Return to Silent Hill. That teaser also featured Pyramid Head, a Big Bad of Silent Hill mythology. In an interview with Screen Rant, actor Robert Strange teased what fans can expect from Pyramid Head's return in the movie.
