Starz has canceled “Dangerous Liaisons” after one season — despite that the historical drama was renewed just last month, Variety has confirmed.

Though executives at Starz had much faith behind the series, sources say the team decided to axe the show due to it not finding its audience. The remaining three episodes in the first season will be released as scheduled.

“Dangerous Liaisons” was given a Season 2 order in November, prior to its Nov. 6 premiere.

Alice Elgert and Nicholas Denton star in the show as the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont. Based on the famous 18th century novel of the same name by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, the Starz series served as a prequel to the historic tale showing the origin story of the notorious couple.

Exclusive: Dangerous Liaisons has been canceled at Starz, reversing its early Season 2 renewal. The remaining three episodes of the 8-episode first season will air as scheduled.

Executive producers are actively shopping the period drama around, Deadline hears.

Dangerous Liaisons’ Season 2 renewal was announced on Nov. 1, ahead of the series’ Nov. 6 debut. According to sources Starz brass continue to believe in the show creatively but the prequel to the famous 18th-century novel struggled to find an audience, leading to its cancellation.

On linear, Dangerous Liaisons premiered with a 0.03 rating among the 18-49 demographic and only 88,000 total viewers, according to live + same day Nielsen data. Things didn’t improve in the following weeks, with the show dropping as low as a 0.02 and 52,000 total viewers for the Thanksgiving weekend episode. Though ratings improved slightly with its Dec. 4 airing, the show has yet to crack a six-figure L+Sd audience thus far. Starz has...

The Starz series, based on the infamous epistolary novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, pulls back the curtain on life in 18th-century France and revels in one lower-class woman's quest to conquer the nobility. Superficially, Dangerous Liaisons would seem to be serving up everything a Dangerous Liaisons series ought to. The Starz drama is positively overflowing with beautiful people vowing love and revenge with equal fervor, toying with each other’s sentiments and reputations in pursuit of power or just plain fun — all from within the gorgeously ornate trappings of 18th-century French nobility, the impending revolution barely a whisper on the wind.

And for a spell, it feels like it could be enough. But as the season progresses, it becomes increasingly clear that the accusations the characters throw at one another of lacking heart may as well be levied toward the series itself. With paper-thin characters and a narrative that prioritizes momentum over emotional depth, its confectionary delights dissolve as quickly as sugar on the tongue.

At a recent press event, we had the pleasure of speaking to three women whose characters are central to the narrative -- Kosar Ali, Colette Dalal Tchantcho, and Carice Van Houten.

Kosar Ali is an up-and-coming British actress who catapulted to stardom with the indie film Rocks, for which she earned a BAFTA nomination.

Kosar plays Victoire, the fiercely loyal friend of Camille, navigating their way through the French aristocracy of the late 18th century.

Starz has renewed its “Dangerous Liaisons” series for a second season before the first has premiered.

The series, described as a “prelude” to the novel of the same name by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, will officially debut on Nov. 6 on the Starz linear network, the Starz app, and all Starz streaming and on-demand platforms. It will be available on Lionsgate+ across Europe, Latin America, and Japan. Season 2 will begin production in Prague in early 2023.

Alice Englert (“The Power Of The Dog”) and Nicholas Denton (“Glitch”) play literary lovers-slash-enemies Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont. The series imagines a prelude to Laclos’ 18th-century novel in which the pair meet in Paris and have a passionate affair on the cusp of the French Revolution. The couple must rely on their manipulation of the French nobility and themselves to survive: Camille (Englert) is taken in by the current Marquise (played by Lesley Manville) while Valmont chases after a title that was recently stripped from him.

The series also stars Kosar Ali, Carice van Houten, Hilton Pelser, Fisayo Akinade, Michael McElhatton, Nathanael Saleh, Colette Dalal Tchantcho, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Tom Wlaschiha, and Paloma Faith.

The third season of Tom Clancy’s political action thriller series “Jack Ryan” is set to premiere on Prime Video Dec. 21.

Starz is preparing to launch its adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ classic 18th Century novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Dangerous Liaisons).

The network has unveiled its first-look images as well as a teaser trailer and has set a premiere date for the series.

“Power Book III: Raising Kanan” has been renewed for its third season at Starz. Announced at the Television Critics Association 2022 summer press tour, the news comes ahead of the Aug. 14 debut of Season 2.

“Raising Kanan,” the third series in the “Power” universe, it set in the early ‘90s and tells the origin story of Kanan Stark (MeKai Curtis) and his entry into the criminal world through his mother, Raquel (Patina Miller) who ruthlessly runs the family’s drug empire. The short follows in the footsteps of Four8’s previous shorts in the trilogy – I Am Joseph and I Am Pilate – which reintroduce biblical characters in timeless settings, expanding on their individual journeys and providing audiences with the opportunity to connect with these human stories.

An emotionally gripping tale for Christmas, at times shocking, at times tender and intimate, I Am Mary follows the arrival of a mysterious stranger at the house of a mother who has fled a hostile regime and is now living in exile with her young son. This dramatic but ultimately uplifting encounter gives her the chance to heal the wounds of a traumatic past and to accept the destiny that she and her son must face – to bring hope to a troubled world.
