Isaiah Mustafa and Andrew Koji are absolutely hilarious in the insanely violent Boy Kills World. The feature debut from German director Moritz Mohr has the deaf-mute Boy (Bill Skarsgrd) avenging his family's murder against tyrannical oppressors in a post-apocalyptic city. Mustafa and Koji become his wise-cracking, ass-kicking allies along the way. A running joke has Boy, who reads lips to understand people, being able to comprehend Koji, but he never understands a word Mustafa is saying. His dialogue is entirely composed of gibberish. Boy Kills World stars Bill Skarsgrd as a deaf and mute fighter seeking bloody vengeance for the murder of his family. His targets are the ruthless van der Koy siblings. They rule a post-apocalyptic city with an iron fist. Famke Janssen co-stars as Hilda van der Koy, a paranoid and psychotic tyrant hellbent on finding a long-lost enemy. Brett Gelman portrays Gideon, Hilda's younger brother. He writes scripts for their theatrical massacres, which are directed by Melanie van der Koy (Michelle Dockery), the middle sister and true brains behind the cruel dynasty.

Boy Kills World surprises by giving the antagonists real, interesting depth. Janssen "added a lot of things that weren't in [the script] just to humanize her and to make her seem truly insane." Gelman felt that Gideon had a "sadness to him" because of "wanting to be a writer and not be a dictator anymore.

In “Boy Kills World,” Bill Skarsgård has burning eyes and model cheekbones, sinewy arms popping out of a dirty red athletic vest, and a feral pout that makes him look like Jean-Claude Van Damme crossed with Lou Reed. He plays a deaf-mute avenger, known only as Boy, who kills people in insanely violent ways. Yet through it all, the character retains his innocence. He’s a wounded wild child in a man’s body.

Gore is not for everyone. That goes without saying, but I’m a big fan of bloody spectacle. There’s just something very appealing about limbs getting torn off, heads spinning and blood covering every inch of the screen.

Which is exactly why I loved Boy Kills World, Moritz Mohr’s exceptionally stylish and gory new action thriller. If gore is not your thing, you prefer substance over style, you may want to take this review with a grain of salt.

Good news for 12-year-old kids who talk about Deadpool as if he’s Jean-Luc Godard, think calling someone a “fuck puppet” is the height of comedy, and just can’t wait until July for another noxiously self-aware cartoon bloodbath about a disfigured anti-hero who dresses in red and simply refuses to shut up: “Boy Kills World” is here. The film’s hyper-logorrheic protagonist doesn’t actually talk, on account of the fact that his tongue was sliced off when he was a child. “Boy” communicates to us instead through the magic of his internal monologue, for which he permanently assigned the voice of H. Jon Benjamin because the “Bob’s Burgers” actor sounds like a little boy’s idea of a lovable vigilante, equal parts Ryan Reynolds and Christian Bale.

As with most of the details that make up Moritz Mohr’s all too zany debut, it’s a clever device...

Moritz Mohr’s Boy Kills World is what happens when you toss The Hunger Games, Mortal Kombat, Happy!, and Crank into a blender. While that sounds rad, the slurry of upbeat action and nonsense plot tangles is much more baffling in execution. Mohr’s vision borrows heavily from button-mashy videogames and dystopian graphic novels, blending Cyberpunk futurism with real-world dictatorship commentaries. There’s a message about fascism and rebellion somewhere in Mohr’s madcap martial arts violence, but it’s lost under the piles of enemy corpses. Boy Kills World never knows the movie it wants to be past a killing spree, as the story makes one poor choice after the next, like a genre satire that becomes what it tries to parody.

Signature Entertainment has taken UK and Ireland rights to Sam Raimi produced Boy Kills World, starring Swedish actor Bill Skarsgård.

The action thriller is the debut feature from German filmmaker Moritz Mohr, from a screenplay by Arend Remmers and Tyler Burton Smith. The Toronto premiere was acquired from Capstone Global.

The official trailer for Boy Kills World shows Bill Skarsgård playing a deaf-mute man who’s determined to kill the corrupt people responsible for his family’s death. His violent journey to vengeance will be hilariously narrated by his inner voice, which he developed from his favorite game. Skarsgård’s inner monologue will be voiced by Bob’s Burgers star H. Bill Skarsgård has quickly become an actor whose very presence in a film suggests something twisted is about to go down -- that's what happens when you play a child-eating clown monster in two of the highest-grossing horror movies of all time. But where "Barbarian" cleverly used that foreknowledge to subvert audience expectations and "John Wick: Chapter 4" embraced it by casting the "It" star as the slimeball Marquis Vincent Bisset de Gramont, Moritz Mohr splits the difference in his feature directing debut, "Boy Kills World." The original trailer concept for Moritz Mohr and Arend Remmers's Boy Kills World didn't skimp on the violence and stylish action as the deaf-mute Boy tore through a group of thugs. With slow-motion shots, satisfying blood splatters, choreography that emphasized the damage the unlikely action hero inflicted, and a dash of humor from the narration, it sparked intrigue for what could be done with a feature-length production. Now that Mohr and his team have had the opportunity to deliver that film and premiere it at the Toronto International Film Festival's Midnight Madness, they can attest to taking a similar all-in approach to gore, action, and special effects on the full project.

While its revenge plot may not offer any genuine narrative surprises, the manic B-movie energy combined with frenetic, gory action infuses a familiar conceit with a sense of video game fun.

Bill Skarsgård stars as Boy, a deaf-mute honed as a weapon for much of his life by a mysterious Shaman (The Raid’s Yayan Ruhian). Update: It looks like the Cannes trailer that went up earlier was in fact a leak so we had to take it down. Nonetheless, it did its job, which was to create a bit of buzz for this really cool looking epic. Hopefully the official release happens soon!
