Film Review: Yoyogi Johnny (2025) by Satoshi Kimura
Image
Johnny (Kanon) is a confused and indecisive teenager who seems to be drifting through life. After breaking up with his girlfriend, Asako (Mio Matsuda), because he feels his love for her is no different from his passion for history class (his favourite subject), he spends most of his free time hiding in the squash club room. He and his teammates—who don’t play squash—spend their time aimlessly hanging out. Their routine for two years changes when Mochida Deko (Shiem Toshi) joins the club, bringing with her a sense of structure and focus that Johnny lacks. Slowly, Johnny begins to make decisions, including one to confess his feelings to Izumo (Maya Imamori), his part-time -job-mate. However, things don’t unfold as he plans.

Yoyogi Johnny is screening at Osaka Asian Film Festival

While “Yoyogi Johnny” follows a familiar coming-of-age structure, it is worthy of audience attention due to its merits.
