RZA On His New Film ‘One Spoon of Chocolate,’ And His Growth As a Filmmaker: “I Honestly Feel Like I Have Arrived”
RZA at an event for Cut Throat City (2020)
Before making his fourth feature film, the action revenge thriller One Spoon of Chocolate, legendary rapper and music producer RZA was still, he confesses, unsure of himself as a filmmaker, feeling that he hadn’t yet mastered the process, the “rhythms” as he calls it, of being a director, at least not to the same comfort level he had with music.

After scaling the heights of hip hop as the de facto head of the Wu-Tang Clan, arguably the most influential rap group in history, RZA has found increasing success in film and television, firstly as an actor — he has starred in films like American Gangster (2007), G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013) and Nobody (2021) and series like Californication — and more significantly with writing and directing. His directorial debut, 2012’s The Man With the Iron Fists, starred Oscar-winner Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista and Lucy Lu. RZA followed that with Love Beats Rhymes, a musical drama starring Azelia Banks,...

Moore’s former military convict Unique arrives in a seemingly quiet Midwestern town (shot in Atlanta as a stand-in for Ohio) after serving his country and his prison sentence for an assault he never committed to restart his life with his only surviving relative,...

Why Power Rangers 2 Was Cancelled
Image
Film history is built on cult classics as much as is it on blockbusters. These are movies that, while they didn't necessarily make a huge impact upon their initial release, gained appreciation in later years and left fans wondering why we didn't see more of what was originally presented. Somehow, a "Power Rangers" film falls into that category.

Directed by Dean Israelite, 2017's "Power Rangers" reinvented the story about a group of teenagers with attitude being recruited by the ancient warrior Zordon (Bryan Cranston) to fight bad guys in color-coded super suits. By jazzing up the origins of Jason (Dacre Montgomery), Billy (Rj Cyler), and the rest of the team, Israelite and his collaborators created a fun film that should have paved the way for sequels. That was the plan, anyway.

Before the film was even released, Lionsgate announced plans to make as many as seven "Power Rangers" movies, assuming...

Keke Palmer Avoids Nudity in Film, Focuses on Next Project
Keke Palmer
Keke Palmer has built a career across multiple genres, but there is one aspect of acting she has avoided.

In a conversation with The Independent, Palmer discussed her hesitation toward nudity in film and television. “Just because I’m so shy and, you know, embarrassed,” she said. “And to know that people are going to be able to have [those scenes] forever? I could never have the confidence to do something like that! I’m not that bold.”

Palmer has often been recognized for her humor and sharp comedic timing. Despite this, she described a different side of herself. “On a deep level, I think I’ve always been the kind of person that’s felt very lonely or had these big emotions,” she said. “And I always say that people who are considered comedians, or people that make people laugh, they’re not necessarily seen as serious. Usually, though, they’re...

'Power Rangers' With Bryan Cranston & Elizabeth Banks Coming to Netflix
Image
Back in 2017, Lionsgate released a Power Rangers movie that was part The Breakfast Club coming-of-age story and a bit of the children's superhero series that most of us grew up with. The end result received mixed reviews from critics, and it generated a so-so box office. This ended plans to launch a series of multiple sequels, but since its release, the film has generated a bit of a cult following, and now that can continue with the movie finding a new streaming home.

According to what's coming to streaming next month via What's On Netflix, Power Rangers will be available to stream on Netflix beginning on Mar. 6. Films that are freshly added to the platform tend to perform well, and it's hopeful that the same will happen to Power Rangers. White Boy Rick True Story Explained: Where Is Richard Wershe Jr. Now?
Image
White Boy Rick is a 2018 crime drama that tells the real story of Richard "Ricky" Wershe Jr. and while some of the facts are altered for dramatic effect, much of the incredible story is true to history. White Boy Rick is a movie based on the unbelievable true story of Richard Wershe Jr. who, at age 14, became the youngest FBI informant ever. His story, from helping his father run illegal gun rings to becoming one of the biggest dealers in Detroit, is one almost too outrageous, and too unfair to be believed.

Fans were pumped, expecting a grand revival of the colorful team of teens who fight evil with the power of the Power Zords. The film earned a respectable $142 million at the global box office. Every New Black Movie Releasing In 2024
Image
Black movies, starring Black actors and directed by Black creators, are still underrepresented in cinema in 2024. Despite low representation, 2024 has seen some fantastic Black movies with at least 20 notable new releases expected by year-end. From historical retellings to comedies to continuations of beloved franchises, Black cinema in 2024 offers a diverse and engaging line-up.

2024 has brought a slew of thoughtful, funny, frightening, and dramatic new Black movies to streamers and screens, with many still on their way in fall and winter. Movies starring Black actors and by Black creators are worthy of note because, among many reasons, iconic Black movies are still underrepresented in cinema. Even in 2024, a year with some fantastic Black movies, by the end of July, less than 10% of major movie releases starred a mostly Black cast, were directed by a Black director, or were focused on issues pertaining mostly to Black people.

Despite low representation, there have...

Before House Of The Dragon, Olivia Cookes Best Performance Was In This 2015 Movie With 82% On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Olivia Cooke shone as Rachel in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl before impressively taking on Alicent Hightower in House of the Dragon. Rachel and Alicent share surprising parallels, both wise beyond their years, navigating tough circumstances with courage and honesty. Cooke's stellar performance as Rachel prepared her well for the emotional depth and resilience required to portray Alicent in the popular Max series.

Olivia Cooke is now best known for her excellent portrayal of Alicent Hightower in House of the Dragon, but before that, her best role was in an underrated 2015 film. Before these projects joined the ranks of her best movies and shows, Cooke gained widespread recognition for her regular role as Emma Decody in the Psycho prequel series Bates Motel. She went on to appear in a variety of other films and series, including as Samantha/Art3mis in Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One and...

Sabrina Carpenter Goes Full Karen in This Darkly Entertaining Satire
Image
Depending on your Spotify playlist or your TikTok/Instagram feed, you've probably heard some of Sabrina Carpenter's music. (Is it possible to exist and not have heard "Espresso"?) Carpenter has also appeared in multiple films and television series, getting her start on Disney Channel's Girl Meets World. One film that may have flown under the radar is Emergency, directed by Carey Williams and written by K.D. Dvila. Based on Williams and Dvila's short film of the same name, Emergency centers on college students Kunle (Donald Elise Watkins) and Sean (Rj Cyler) preparing to undergo a legendary bar crawl. But their plans get upended when they discover an unconscious girl in their room. Kunle, Sean, and their roommate Carlos (Sebastian Chacon) decide to take the girl to a hospital, unaware that her sister Maddy (Carpenter) is looking for her. What should be a simple journey rapidly escalates as Kunle,...

10 Reasons Critics Were Wrong About the Power Rangers Reboot
Image
When it comes to theatrical movie releases, critics can dominate the conversation surrounding the film. With the advent of social media, it is easier for certain narratives surrounding films to be crafted to influence fans before the film fully debuts. This critical period before a film is viewed by fans leaves the only narrative about the film currently available.

The true voice of a film comes from the fans themselves. The Power Rangers franchise has been thriving for decades, and many of these fans have welcomed this new live-action addition with open arms. Several key pieces of the film were criminally underrated by critics and deserved praise for elevating the film.

Image
Power Rangers fans are disappointed with the latest update from the upcoming live-action show. Netflix has reportedly abandoned the project and Hasbro is looking for a new partner to take on the project. The series was in development for more than two years under Supernatural story editor Jenny Klein and The End Of The F***ing World co-creator Jonathan Entwistle.

However, fans have suggested another solution for the Hasbro property to emerge stronger than ever. Before Hasbro took over, Saban developed a film version of the 1993 show, Power Rangers, in 2017. The film was a commercial failure, but fans have grown to like it and want Hasbro to pursue a sequel.

The Best Western Movie Since 2020 Is a Netflix Original
Image
The Harder They Fall is a bold re-imagining of classic Westerns with unique and stylized visuals. Unlike traditional Westerns, The Harder They Fall provides innovative action sequences and explosive violence unseen in traditional Westerns. The Harder They Fall spotlights marginalized characters, showcasing new a perspective on a classic genre.

Westerns used to be the biggest film genre in the world. 20th-century audiences were obsessed with archetypal gunslingers and their masculine pursuits of justice, and over several decades, the genre developed into one of the richest in cinema history. Many talented storytellers got their start tackling the mythology of the great frontier, including Sergio Leone and John Ford. However, recently the genre has grown stagnant, as quality Westerns have become all too rare in the modern age.

By the 90s, deconstructionist westerns became the norm, with films like Unforgiven subverting iconic clichs to great effect. While this wave of genre experimentation resulted in some great films,...

7 Years Later, I Still Cant Accept 2017s Power Rangers Isnt Getting A Sequel
Image
Power Rangers (2017) was a great reboot of Mighty Morphin with missed potential for a sequel. The film set up the Green Ranger story for a sequel that never happened. Power Rangers (2017) had the potential for a cinematic universe but failed to kick-start a franchise despite its quality.

It has been seven years since Power Rangers (2017) hit theaters, and I still cannot believe we are not getting a sequel. From a financial standpoint, it is not surprising that Power Rangers 2 never happened. The 2017 reboot grossed only $143 million on a $120 million budget (via The Numbers), making a sequel very unlikely. Still, considering how well the film was received among long-time Power Rangers fans and new audiences, Power Rangers 2 could have worked. Having watched all Power Rangers movies and TV shows countless times, the 2017 film is among my favorite entries in the franchise.

Similar to the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie,...

How To Watch The Book Of Clarence At Home
Image
Biblical epics used to be Hollywood's bread and butter. From "The Ten Commandments" to "Ben-Hur," the unique blend of high-stakes drama, and big-scale spectacle used to dominate the box office as well as awards season. Today, they've all but disappeared from the filmmaking landscape. This makes the release of a movie like "The Book of Clarence" all the more special.

Written and directed by Jeymes "The Bullitts" Samuel ("The Harder They Fall"), "The Book of Clarence" combines a biblical epic with the comedic tone of Monty Python's "Life of Brian" or Mel Brook's "History of the World," poking fun at the story of a rising messiah, and the man who sees that fame and power and decides to get some of that for himself.

/Film's own Witney Seibold reviewed "The Book of Clarence" and called it "aspirational, unique, moving, funny, weird, and very shaggy." The film stars Lakeith Stanfield ("Atlanta...

The Book of Clarence: Jay-Z’s New Comedy Is a Massive Box Office Flop
Image
The Book of Clarence, starring Lakeith Stanfield, has been a major box-office flop, earning only around $4.7 million worldwide. The film's unconventional and irreverent approach to the biblical genre alienated faith-based audiences who were unable to relate to its zaniness. With a production cost of $40 million and dim prospects at the overseas box office, The Book of Clarence faces an uphill battle to reach its break-even point and profitability.

The biblical comedy-drama film The Book of Clarence stars Lakeith Stanfield in the role of Clarence, a debt-ridden, down-on-his-luck man in A.D. 33 Jerusalem who attempts to capitalize on the rise of Jesus Christ by presenting himself as a new Messiah who has been sent to Earth by God.

The satirical tone of The Book of Clarence is established in the film’s opening scene, in which Clarence, who owes money to a loan shark named Jebediah the Terrible, loses a chariot race with Mary Magdalene.
