Luca Guadagnino’s OpenAI Movie Will Depict Elon Musk: He’s ‘Not So Bad, as Far as Dictators Go,’ Says the Script — Report
Image
Simon Rich’s script for “Artificial,” the upcoming, Andrew Garfield-starring Luca Guadagnino feature that tackles the company OpenAI, has the chance to be something of an A.I. time bomb, if Matthew Belloni’s description in the Puck newsletter is anything to go by. Belloni read a draft of the script, and — though he’s careful to say he “won’t give away too much” — gives away enough to ruffle some Silicon Valley feathers… and possibly Elon Musk.

According to Belloni, the movie, set for 2026 and produced by Amazon of all places, depicts many of the heavy hitters in the A.I. world but focuses on Ilya Sutskever (to be played by “Anora” Oscar-nominee Yura Borisov), the engineer who co-founded OpenAI. Belloni writes that the character is “leveraged, marginalized, and ultimately betrayed by both his power-hungry friend Altman and the larger Silicon Valley community — with potentially disastrous consequences for all of humanity.

'Anora' Director Sean Baker Teases Next Project as "Not a Marvel Film"

Sean Baker, the director of films like The Florida Project, Red Rocket, and recent Academy Award darling, Anora, is already planning his next film. His sweep at the Oscars surely made some heads turn and his schedule is probably packed, but don't expect him to make the jump towards the studio system. The director is planning to stay in the indie circles, and to prove his point, he has made a stinging remark. While talking about his next project, Baker simply said, "Don’t expect a Marvel film."

Baker probably doesn't mean ill will towards his colleagues and peers who have built their career in the studio system, and mainly focused on franchises. He stated that he prefers the radically different universe that is the production of independent movies. And he has a very good reason for this.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Baker appeared on the podcast It Happened in Hollywood,...

Since releasing his first feature in 2000, writer/director Sean Baker has built himself a name as an exciting voice in independent cinema. As his works have gotten more attention, from Tangerine being shot on multiple iPhones, to Willem Dafoe’s Oscar nomination for The Florida Project, Baker has grown in stature as a director. This leads us to Anora, the writer/director’s eighth feature which won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes festival, and manages to be another exemplary piece of cinema from the creative.

British viewers may find themselves surprised in this film’s opening moments, as a remix of Take That’s ‘Greatest Day’ plays while a line of exotic dancers perform for paying customers.

Anora is — in my opinion — the best film of 2024, and it is an absolute gift to have this gorgeous new edition join the Criterion Collection.

Anora plot

Anora (Mikey Madison) — or “Ani” as she likes to be called — is an exotic dancer and sex worker. She spends her nights buttering up clients and enticing them to spend their cash on her in the club’s VIP section. One of those clients winds up being Ivan, a wealthy young...

Review: Sean Baker’s Best Picture-Winning ‘Anora’ on Criterion 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Image
The eponymous character of Anora, a feisty 23-year-old Brooklyn sex worker, lives the sort of hardscrabble and precarious life that Sean Baker has vigorously tracked across his work. But while Baker’s protagonists are typically mired in the same place, Ani (Mikey Madison), as Anora emphatically prefers to be called, manages to escape the familiar, and crash through the class divide with all the subtlety of a wrecking ball. Her quixotic quest to remain among Russian oligarchs is a riotously funny neorealist farce that will be familiar to fans of Tangerine and Red Rocket, though at times it feels like the rougher edges of Baker’s vision have been smoothed out in the interest of driving home an easily digestible allegory.

We meet Ani inside the strip club where she works as a dancer, an environment that she manages an impressive level of control over. She easily seduces the wealthy...

The 47 Best Romance Movies of the 21st Century, from ‘High Fidelity’ to ‘Carol’
Image
What would movies be about if not for love? Since well before the days of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in “Casablanca,” romance has driven countless classic stories, setting up some of the highest highs in cinematic history to follow. Be it Cary Grant and Grace Kelly seeing stars in “To Catch a Thief” or Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal disturbing diner patrons in “When Harry Met Sally,” the 20th century was chock full of iconic romances that helped humanity fall in love with the movies. Of course, those titles were dominated by white artists telling largely heteronormative tales — meaning many (but not all) of the best and most inclusive romances have arrived this millennium.

Now, the best romance movies of the 21st century both resonate and surprise, showing audiences characters they might recognize from their own lives in new and surprising ways. Yes, finding “the one” is exceedingly well-frequented thematic territory,...

Welcome back one and all to another edition of the International Insider. We’ve got Oscars analysis plus plenty more so strap in. Max Goldbart here steering the ship this week. If you’re not on our mailing list, do sign up here.

Oscar We Hardly Knew Ya

Supreme internationalization: It’s hard to believe the Oscars is already almost a week old (any talk of how next year’s awards season has already started is banned), but on reflection it was quite the year for international movies and the growing internationalization of cinema. After what felt like an entire epoch of campaigning (complete with a few highs and some very low lows), it was Anora in the end that swept up – winning Best Actress for superstar-in-the-making Mikey Madison and a record four awards for director Sean Baker, who was finally rewarded for a unique, gonzo-style of filmmaking that pays...

Deadpool & Wolverine Actor Confirms They Were The Dancing Deadpool Who Performed During Sunday's Oscars
Image
Deadpool & Wolverine opened with Wade Wilson pulling off some impressive dance moves to the tune of Nsync's "Bye Bye Bye." However, it wasn't Ryan Reynolds in the suit; instead, dancer Nick Pauley took on the role of the McU's "Dancepool."

During Sunday's 97th Academy Awards, host Conan O'Brien performed "I Won't Waste Time" and was accompanied on stage by Dune: Part Two's Sandworm and Deadpool & Wolverine's titular Merc with the Mouth.

The Marvel Studios movie didn't receive a single nomination - much to the chagrin of many comic book fans - but Deadpool's cameo felt like an acknowledgement of what a positive impact the threequel made to theaters in 2024.

Now, Pauley has taken to Instagram to confirm he once again donned the suit for the Oscars. He also credited Ryan Reynolds for advocating that he be the one who hit the stage as "Dancepool."

"Thank you [Ryan Reynolds]; who loved the...

Anora Oscar Winner Mikey Madison Rumored To Be In Consideration For Marvel Studios Role
Image
Mikey Madison was already starting to get a lot of attention thanks to her lead performance in Sean Baker's Anora, but Sunday's surprise Best Actress Oscar win is certain to make the 25-year-old a highly in-demand star in Hollywood.

Major studios are sure to have reached out already, and we're now hearing that Madison could be in line to play a character in an upcoming Marvel Studios project.

We don't have much to go on, but scooper Daniel Richtman is reporting that Madison is "being considered" for an MCU role.

It's always worth keeping in mind that Marvel Studios meets with and reaches out to a lot of talent (it might be quicker to list the people that haven't been up for a part at one point or another), so this is far from a guarantee that Madison is even in talks with the studio.

Even so, there's already...

Mikey Madison and Adrien Brody Swarmed, Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner Get Cozy and Zoe Saldaña Parties With Her Parents: Inside Vanity Fair’s Oscar Party
Image
Just before midnight, two of the Oscars’ biggest winners, Mikey Madison and Adrien Brody, descended on the Vanity Fair party, one of the starriest shindigs of Hollywood’s longest — and biggest — day of the year at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills.

Brody is swarmed by photographers when he strides into the main party space with his partner, fashion designer Georgina Chapman, grinning on his arm and his Oscar statue in hand. The actor’s parents, Sylvia Plachy and Elliot Brody, are a step behind.

Every few feet, “The Brutalist” star gets stopped by one A-lister after another offering their congratulations: There’s Oscars host Conan O’Brien, who has been fielding kudos of his own for a job well done as first-time emcee. Next, Brody says hello to Queen Latifah, who performed the tribute to Quincy Jones during the show. Then, Vin Diesel stops Brody for a handshake and,...

Macaulay Culkin ‘Cried’ Over Brother Kieran’s Oscar Win and Only Watched His Category: ‘There Was No Way He Was Not Going to Win’
Image
Macaulay Culkin revealed at the Vanity Fair Oscars party (via Entertainment Weekly) that he cried when his younger brother Kieran Culkin won the Oscar for best supporting actor at the 2025 Academy Awards. It turns out that category was the only part of the Oscars telecast that Macaulay Culkin and his partner, fellow actor Brenda Song, watched.

“Just the Best Supporting Actor,” Macaulay Culkin said when asked if he watched the show. “That’s the only thing I watched. True story, true story… I cried. And I was like, ‘I’m gonna see you later.’”

Kieran Culkin won the Oscar for best supporting actor thanks to his acclaimed performance in Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain.” He was nominated opposite Yura Borisov (“Anora”), Edward Norton (“A Complete Unknown”) and Guy Pearce (“The Brutalist”). Culkin was considered the Oscar frontrunner after sweeping awards season with supporting actor wins at the Golden Globes,...

Why ‘Anora’ never would have won Best Picture 15 years ago
Image
This is clearly not your parents' Motion Picture Academy. Anora won Best Picture at the Oscars on Sunday, one of five awards claimed by the indie film from director Sean Baker. It's an unconventional Oscar champ to say the least, but unconventional seems to be the new standard for voters, who have made a series of daring choices over the last decade. It appears as though the Academy's efforts to expand and diversify its ranks are paying off. While diversity in business and government faces a vicious backlash, Anora shows how Dei has transformed the Oscars.

The Oscars Are International, and That’s Ok
Image
No guts, no glory. The way to win your Oscar pool this year was to skip some of the obvious frontrunners, note the surge in popularity on the ground, and bet that the international bloc would push over the top Sideshow/Janus Films’ Animated Feature nominee “Flow” (the first Latvian Oscar win), Cinetic Media’s Documentary Feature “No Other Land” (the first Palestinian win), and Sony Pictures Classics’ International Feature “I’m Still Here” (Brazil’s first Oscar in a major category). Even the Live Action and Animated Short winners were international (The Netherlands’ “I Am Not a Robot” and Iran’s “In the Shadow of the Cyprus”).

As American as “Anora” is, the raucous $6-million comedy launched at Cannes with the Palme d’Or and mustered support over the next 10 months across the globe. Oscar-winners “Flow,” “The Substance” (Makeup & Hairstyling), and “Emilia Pérez” also played big at Cannes.

Many folks expected “Anora,...

Anora’s Best Picture Win Is A Victory For Truly Independent Cinema
Image
Throughout his speeches for his record-breaking four Oscar wins yesterday (the most amount ever awarded to one person for one film), Sean Baker thanked his team, his distributors, his cast, and his crew, and the sex-worker community, and his dog Bunsen. By the time Anora bagged Best Picture, the orchestra once more striking up Take That’s ‘Greatest Day’, there was barely anyone left to thank. Just as Anora is a fairy-tale story, this was a fairy-tale win for, as Baker said during his final speech, “a truly independent film” made by someone who, a decade ago, was on the verge of jacking it all in.

I first met Baker in 2015, interviewing him for his fifth feature, the transgender sex-worker comedy drama Tangerine, which tore through the screen just as its protagonists tore through Hollywood. Its heroines were hustlers, as was Baker, not that he particularly wanted to be. He...
