From cult classics to modern horror favourites, the line-up promises thrills for every taste. Notably, this month’s programme includes supernatural tales, slashers, and a special tribute to horror legend Boris Karloff on his birthday.

Airing at 9 pm, Spookt follows a group as they grapple with terrifying paranormal events that push them to the edge. Another highlight this month is Stage Fright (2014), a darkly comedic fusion of horror and musical directed by Jerome Sable, featuring Minnie Driver and the late Meat Loaf. Spookt (2023)
Searching for the supernatural by Jennie Kermode
Spookt (2023)

Two popular vloggers; one supposedly haunted house. That’s the set-up for Spookt, which screened recently at Frightfest, with the complication that one of those women is devoted to proving the existence of the paranormal and the other is an avowed sceptic with a history of debunking dodgy claims. They’re not exactly fans of one another’s work, yet as they investigate the building where a child once disappeared, they will both find themselves facing the unexpected, and will ultimately have to work together in order to solve the mystery and escape.

Starring Haley Leary as Claire, the believer, and Christen Sharice as Rachel, her rival, the film was directed by Tony Reames and produced by Vanessa Ionta Wright (amongst others). When I met up with Tony and Vanessa to discuss it, we began by talking about the phenomenon of supernatural-themed vlogging. it wasn...

Frigthfest 2023: ‘Spookt’ Review
Image
Stars: Christen Sharice, Haley Leary, Eric Roberts, Erin Brown, Keith Brooks, Victor Rivera, Crystal Cleveland, Jennifer Pearl, Davi Crimmins | Written by Torey Haas | Directed by Tony Reames

Director Tony Reames opens his feature debut, Spookt, with a simple scene, as a boy walks home alone while listening to music through his headphones. The walk is interrupted by a supernatural occurrence, startling the boy as he passes a spooky house. Known as the Gibson house, it is part of local folklore whose bloodied history still frightens locals.

Voice-over gets out the necessary information with accompanying footage, highlighting how ten-year-old Flora Blu Giddens disappeared 6 years earlier after walking into the Gibson house on a dare. It was previously owned by once-respected surgeon and Greenville Butcher, Dr. Bram Byler (Eric Roberts). Delivering this info dump is skeptical YouTuber, Rachel (Christen Sharice), who spends her time debunking supernatural events and has her sights set on the Gibson house next.

Give Me the Fear – Episode 2: New Life, Spookt & The Black Mass
Image
Welcome to Give Me the Fear, a new Frightfest 2023 preview series hosted by screenwriter Stuart Wright.

These brief, spoiler-free interviews will – across the entire series – help you to discover the kind of knowledge and experience about how to make indie horror films that they don’t teach at film school.

After looking back at the blood, sweat and tears that went into their creative successes, I ask them one last question: If you could hand pick one person to be in the audience for your Frightfest screening, who would it be and why? I think you going to love the answers this question elicits.

This episode features New Life and The Black Mass (Devanny Pinn).

‘Dead by Midnight (Y2Kill)’ Review
Image
Stars: Erin Brown, Hannah Fierman, Marilyn Light, Seth Michaels, Kane Hodder, Bill Moseley, Melissa Haas, Charis Jeffers, Daniel Rashid, Logan Creed, Tommy Grillo, Linnea Quigley | Directed by Davi Crimmins, Eric Davis, Hannah Fierman, Greg Garrison, Melissa Haas, Torey Haas, Jay Holloway, Jenna Kanell, Anissa Matlock, Tony Reames

Dead by Midnight (Y2Kill) is the unexpected follow-up to Dead by Midnight (11pm Central). And I say unexpected because despite being a fun collection of stories, it pretty much stayed under everyone’s radar. But enough people did see it that a second film got greenlighted, and with a big enough budget to include a couple of genre heavyweights.

The film opens with The Mistress of Midnight sitting around hell, googling for reviews of the first film and unleashing her wrath on those who didn’t give it a thumbs up.

From here we leap to The Temptress introducing the first segment...

The Final Song Phife Dawg Recorded Just Got a Moving Music Video to Match
Image
Phife Dawg’s estate has shared a new music video for “Forever,” the final song the Tribe Called Quest rapper ever recorded and the title track from his new posthumous album.

Directed by Tony Reames and Dion “Rasta Root” Liverpool, the clip pairs the sprawling “Forever” with some lyric video-style animations — but with a very personal and poignant twist — and an array of photos and videos from throughout Phife’s life and career.

“When I first heard ‘Forever’, I was not prepared for the depth and honesty, it took me...

Redman Hops on Phife Dawg’s Posthumous Ode to Montreal, ‘French Kiss Trois’
Image
The estate of Phife Dawg has released a new posthumous track and music video, “French Kiss Trois,” featuring Redman and Illa J (the younger brother of the late J Dilla).

“French Kiss Trois” — as one might expect — is a follow-up to “French Kiss Deux,” another posthumous Phife cut that was released in May, produced by Potatohead People and also featured Illa J. “Trois” came about after Redman heard “Deux” and knew he wanted to hop on the track himself.

Both versions of “French Kiss” pay homage to the city of Montreal,...

Image
On the fifth anniversary of Phife Dawg’s death, March 22nd, a new video has arrived for the rapper’s posthumous single, “Nutshell Part 2,” featuring Busta Rhymes and Redman.

The video was directed by Tony Reames and features old footage of the late A Tribe Called Rapper spitting the spirited track (including for a rapt audience at a diner table). Busta Rhymes and Redman also appear in the clip, as do Q-Tip, Consequence, and DJ Rasta Root.

“Nutshell Part 2” is a remix of a track, “Nutshell,” released one month after Phife Dawg’s death.
