The cast and crew of Emily in Paris are back to work on season five following the tragic death of an assistant director earlier in the week.

Lily Collins was spotted filming a scene on a gondola on Saturday afternoon (August 23) in Venice, Italy.

The 36-year-old actress was joined by co-stars Ashley Park, Eugenio Franceschini, and Paul Forman for the scene.

Two days earlier, the show’s assistant director Diego Borella tragically passed away during a medical emergency that happened while filming at Hotel Danieli in Venice.

Tragedy struck the set of Emily in Paris Season 5 when assistant director Diego Borella collapsed and died on set while filming in Venice, Italy. The 47-year-old assistant director reportedly collapsed from a suspected heart attack on Thursday, August 21. The incident occurred during the final scene inside the historic Hotel Danieli.

Medical staff on site immediately rushed to his aid. But despite their efforts, Borella was pronounced dead at the scene around 7:30 p.m. local time, according to reports from Italian news outlets La Repubblica, Il Messaggero, and Corriere della Sera (via People).

A spokesperson from Paramount Television Studios released a statement to People, expressing their grief:

Borella reportedly collapsed on set while the series was filming season five in Venice, Italy, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the Emily in Paris production family,” a Paramount Television Studios spokesperson said in a statement to THR. “Our hearts go out to the individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

Borella was pronounced dead at around 7:00 p.m. local time on Thursday, Aug. 21, according to multiple outlets. The tragedy happened while the crew was preparing to film a final scene inside Hotel Danieli in Venice. Medical staff was sent to try to revive Borella; however, he died at the scene of “a sudden heart attack,” the La Repubblica reported.

Lily Colins, Ashley Park, Eugenio Franceschini, and Paul Forman were spotted aboard a boat in Venice on Saturday (August 16).

The stylish Netflix series is reportedly filming in the city for much of the rest of the month and were previously spotted filming at a restaurant in Venice.

Lily looked simple and stylish in a black-and-white polka dotted halter dress while Ashley donned a yellow dress, gloves, and a glamorous headpiece. Meanwhile, Eugenio and Paul kept their looks casual in simple collared shirts for the outing.

Lily Collins is spending another day on set!

The 36-year-old Golden Globe-nominated actress and co-star Ashley Park filmed scenes for season five of Emily in Paris at an outdoor restaurant on Friday (August 15) in Venice, Italy.

For their time on set, Lily looked chic in a black and white polka-dot dress while Ashley, 34, donned a red outfit with gold sunglasses.

Filming for the new season of Emily in Paris began back in May when Lily was spotted filming scenes in Rome with co-star Eugenio Franceschini.

Season five is expected to take place just after the end of season four, which was released in 2024, and will be filming in both Italy and France.

There’s been some major updates to the Emily in Paris cast for season five, with three stars joining the cast and one actor claiming that he was fired.

When “Emily in Paris” costume designer Marylin Fitoussi learned that Season 4 of the Netflix series would take its titular character to Italy, she saw it as a perfect opportunity to pay homage to her love for black-and-white films of the 1940s and 1950s — and pay tribute to such cinema Italiano stars as Sophia Loren and Claudia Cardinale.

At the end of Season 4, Emily (Lily Collins) heads to Rome and finds herself enamored with the city and with Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini). To reflect that, Fitoussi took a more romantic approach to Emily’s outfits so that she’s “more relaxed and forgets about her Instagram for a bit.”

“In many Italian movies, you’ll see polka-dot prints,” Fitoussi adds. “Sophia Loren wore several dresses with black-and-white polka dots, or the reverse. So I said, maybe we can play with polka dots.

Actor Rupert Everett had high hopes for his role in the Netflix series Emily in Paris. Unfortunately, the opportunity was not what he had been expecting, leading to a feeling of severe disappointment that Everett had big trouble working through.

After Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez’s opulent, star-studded wedding in June, A-list celebs will be hitting Venice again in August for the shoot of Netflix show Emily in Paris.

Venice mayor Luca Zaia confirmed the news on social media over the weekend revealing that the show will shoot in the lagoon city’s historic center from August 15 to 25, wrapping just two days before the Venice Film Festival kicks off across the water on the Venice Lido on August 27.

“The extraordinary news confirms that our territory is increasingly attractive to big audiovisual productions, thanks to its unique heritage and the teamwork between institutions and professionals in the sector,” Zaia wrote in his post.

He saluted the Veneto Film Commission as well as local production company 360 Degrees Film for their work in location scouting with series director Andrew Fleming and helping to secure Venice as a spot as a location.

Bryan Greenberg has been featured in many projects since his career began in 1997, appearing in titles such as Bride Wars, Friends with Benefits, and Emperor of Ocean Park, just to name a few, before landing a major role in the Suits spin-off, Suits LA, as Rick Dodsen. Unfortunately, the legal drama spin-off has its life cut short, but that doesn't mean it's the end of the road for the American actor. Greenberg has received a second chance to appear on screens once more, as it was reported that he's set to star in Netflix's Emily in Paris, and details about his role have been revealed.

Greenberg is set to play Jake, described as "an American living in Paris," and will be a recurring character in the show. Also joining him is French actress Michèle Laroque (Good Will Hunting), who's set to play Yvette, who's an old friend of Sylvie’s.

Two months after the cancellation of Suits LA, one of its stars has landed a major role. Led by Arrow star Stephen Amell, with original series creator Aaron Korsh returning to spearhead the spinoff, Suits LA turned its attention to the world of entertainment law and put former prosecutor Ted Black right at the center of the action.

With filming of “Emily in Paris” season 5 now underway in France, Netflix has added a couple of new names to the cast of its hit show.

Lily Collins’ Emily will meet a fellow American expat in the upcoming fifth season of Netflix’s hit comedy Emily In Paris. Bryan Greenberg (Suits LA) has joined the cast as recurring, playing Jake, an American living in Paris. Also set to recur in Season 5 is French actress Michèle Laroque (Better Days) who will play Yvette, an old friend of Sylvie’s (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu). Jake and Yvette are two of the three known new recurring characters that will be introduced next season, along with previously announced Princess Jane, played by Minnie Driver.

Nico’s return is particularly noteworthy given his painful breakup with Mindy (Ashley Park) at the end of Season 4, which left her heartbroken.

One of the worst feelings is getting invested in a television show only for it to get canceled well before its prime, leaving piles and piles of loose ends, countless cliffhangers, and unresolved plots. There are several variables for why television shows or series are canceled, from low viewership numbers to high filming costs.

Despite negative comments about his time on the show and the direction the writers were taking, Lucas Bravo is returning. Star promises his frustration at playing Gabriel was just a “misunderstanding.”

In case you hadn't heard the exciting news, Emily's officially back in Paris and hard at work filming the new season of her misadventures in love and life. Emily in Paris season 5 began filming in Rome in early May 2025 before making it back to Paris for the remainder of production. Let's not read too far into what it means that Emily has returned to Paris before we see what happens.

But we might be able to read as far as we'd like into recent comments shared by Emily in Paris creator Darren Star, in which he teases what to expect for Emily's love life in season 5. Even though she finally seems happy and settled in a healthy relationship with Marcello at the end of season 4, it looks like our girl just can't avoid a bit of mess what it comes to romance.

Like his heroine, Emily In Paris creator/executive producer Darren Star is currently in Paris, working on the upcoming fifth season of his hit Netflix comedy series starring Lily Collins.

During an interview about the Netflix success of his previous series, Younger, Star provided an update on Emily In Paris.

“I think we’ve got a really terrific season coming up,” he said. “We filmed in Rome for the first four weeks, and that was an exciting experience to be there. Now we’re back in Paris, Emily is definitely back in Paris.”

Netflix announced in April that production on Season 5 would start in May — first in Rome and then in Paris — for a 2025 premiere. Emily’s not done with Paris — or Rome — just yet. Netflix has officially renewed Emily in Paris for a fifth season, and oui, fans are already plotting their next fashionable binge. This round includes four separate cases, with some significant story arcs running throughout. The episodes are a bit longer than before – each about 2 hours – but the light tenor of the series continues. Peppe helps Saverio with everything, while providing the rest of us with the comic relief of his clumsy, overly-friendly puppy personality.

As revealed by Netflix and exclusively reported by Variety, Minnie Driver will co-star in Emily in Paris season 5 as Princess Jane. The Good Will Hunting and The Riches star plays Sylvie's friend, though if she's an old friend or a recent friend (or even a frenemy), we're not sure yet. Minnie Driver has joined “Emily in Paris” Season 5, Variety has learned exclusively.

The fifth season of the popular Netflix drama series was announced in September 2024, with production kicking off earlier in May in Rome. Lily Collins once again returns as Emily. The cast for Season 5 also includes: Lucas Bravo, Lucien Laviscount, Eugenio Franceschini, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Samuel Arnold, Bruno Gouery, William Abadie and Ashley Park.

Driver will play Princess Jane, described as “A friend of Sylvie’s (Leroy-Beaulieu) who married into a royal family.”

Driver is best known for her film roles, including her Oscar nominated performance in “Good Will Hunting.” She has also been in films like “Owning Mahowny,” the 2004 version of “The Phantom of the Opera,” and 2021’s live-action “Cinderella.” In television, Driver has starred in shows like the FX series “The Riches,” the ABC sitcom “Speechless,” and the Netflix miniseries “The Witcher: Blood Origin.”

It turns out that Emily— as in Lily Collins' titular character in Netflix's Emily in Paris — is not in the French capital, but rather, she has taken a detour to Rome after finding herself falling for an Italian man, Eugenio Franceschini's Marcello, at the end of the fourth season of the rom-com drama created by Darren Star. The only problem is that Season 5's production start date coincided with the first day of the conclave to elect the successor of the late Pope Francis, with the assembly taking place inside the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican in Rome.

Collins took to Instagram to post a photo of herself on a Vespa to announce the first day of filming on Emily in Paris Season 5 on May 7, which just so happened to coincide with the first day of the conclave. "Lights, Camera, Amore – Emily in Paris Season 5 is now in production!

Lily Collins and co-star Eugenio Franceschini spent the afternoon filming scenes at the Fendi store for season 5 of their hit Netflix series on Thursday (May 8) in Rome, Italy.

For their time on set, Lily, 36, looked chic in a white and brown jumpsuit while Eugenio, 33, sported a tan suit.

After filming inside the store, Lily and Eugenio were spotted hopping onto a vespa.

Season five is expected to take place just after the end of season four. The cast will begin filming in Rome, before heading back to Paris for the latter portion of the filming timeframe.

Camille Razat, who plays Emily’s friend and Gabriel’s ex-girlfriend, Cami, will not return to the show after four seasons as a series regular, our sister site Variety first reported. When TVLine reached out to Netflix for confirmation, the streamer responded with a list of returning cast members that did not feature Razat’s name.
