Review: Echoes of Darkness: A Star Wars Fan Film - One of the strongest fan-made Star Wars offerings to date
Image
A new fan-made project called Echoes of Darkness: A Star Wars Fan Film has just been uploaded to YouTube, and it will definitely impress anyone who watches it.

Written and directed by Gary Scullion, who also helmed fan films such as The Witcher 3: The Sorceress of Vengerberg and Mission: Implausible, Echoes of Darkness can now be viewed on the channel of his production company, Sneaky Zebra. The fan film focuses on a ragtag group of smugglers who travel to the Forest Moon of Endor in order to retrieve Darth Vader's burned armor, so that they can sell it to the First Order.

As longtime fans will be aware, Anakin’s body disappeared as he became one with the Force shortly after his death. Therefore, Luke’s burning of the empty armor at the end of Return of the Jedi was more of a symbolic gesture which represented his...

HorRHIFFic 2025: ‘Virus Detected’ Review
Image
Stars: Stacy Hart, Amber Doig-Thorne, Annabella Rich, Charlie Bond, James Hamer-Morton, Matthew Batte, Rose Granger, Dhean Morris, Andrew Spooner | Directed by Charlie Bond, James Hamer-Morton, Paul Cousins, Geoff Harmer, Chris Josty, James Morrissey, James Plumb, Samuel Rush

Virus Detected is a 2025 British horror anthology that delves into the sinister side of technology. The film is structured around a late-night radio show hosted by “Irritable Jo,” portrayed by Stacy Hart. During an intense electrical storm, Jo receives unsettling calls from a mysterious listener sharing eerie tales of electronic devices behaving malevolently. These narratives form the core of the anthology, each exploring a unique technological terror.

The anthology comprises several segments, each helmed by different directors: Mic Drop, is directed by Charlie Bond and James Hamer-Morton; Bad Penny comes from director Paul Cousins. Meanwhile, director Geoff Harmer helms Shock Jock and The Little Ones; and Chris Josty gives us the film’s first tale Virtual Insanity.

HorRHIFFic 2025: ‘Video Shop Tales of Terror 2: Lust & Revenge’ Review
Image
Stars: Amber Doig-Thorne, Laurence R. Harvey, Dani Thompson, Ayvianna Snow, Simon Bamford, David Gelmini, Charlie Bond, Annabella Rich, Rami Hilmi, Sarah Rorbach, James Hamer-Morton | Directed by Angie Darling Baby, Alexander Churchyard, Paul Doherty, Andrew Elias, Bazz Hancher, Jason Impey, Debbie Lant, Tony Mardon, Hannah Paterson, Richard Rowntree, James Saxon, Teddy Saxon

As a fan of the first entry into this now-turned franchise, I was eager to finally get the chance to see the sequel, Video Shop Tales of Terror 2: Lust & Revenge. Like the first film, this second entry into the series promised a return to the nostalgic charm of retro VHS horror – delivering both scores and laughs, just like the first film, and it certainly delivered on both front.

The film comprises multiple segments, each offering a unique blend of terror and dark humour. Video Shop Tales of Terror 2: Lust & Revenge opens with a trailer for “The Beast...

‘St. Patrick’s Day Massacre’ Review
Image
Stars: Marta Svetek, Ayvianna Snow, Charlie Bond, Ciaron Davies, Annabella Rich, Ben Manning, Ray Whelan, Jasmine Sumner | Written and Directed by Steve Lawson

On a trip to Dublin to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, four friends agree to spend the night in an abandoned tavern, where they are stalked by an undead killer in search of revenge for a tragedy that occurred centuries before

In the rich vein of holiday-themed slashers, dating back to the original Halloween, through to more modern fare, as bloodily illustrated by Eli Roth in, Thanksgiving (2023), we have a new entry in killer days, with, St Patrick’s Day Massacre, directed by Steve Lawson ( ).

A rich tale, with compelling characters and a real reflection of modern-day Ireland…this is not. Being of Irish descent and a huge fan of the stalk and slash format, I can stomach, tolerate and happily consume many a substandard Friday the 13th rip-off.

‘Video Shop Tales of Terror’ Review
Image
Stars: Dani Thompson, Laurence Harvey, Annabella Rich, Martin W Payne, Tony Mardon, Singh Lall, Rami Hilmi, Cy Henty, Andrea Sandell, Eve Oliver, Peter Tilley, Faith Elizabeth, Charlie Bond, Mike Butler, Allan Bryce | Directed by Alexander Churchyard, Mj Dixon, Sam Mason Bell, Tony Mardon, Max Davenport, Tom Lee Rutter, Michael Fausti, Andrew Elias, Geoff Harmer

An anthology of tales paying the ultimate homage to the 70/80s Video Nasty Tromaesque-era, from a team of some of the best writers/directors in the lower budget UK horror scene. A carefully curated selection of shorts all with varying degrees of depravity broken up by a wrap around story of the Video Dungeon, all delightfully introduced by Brit Scream Queen royalty Dani Thompson (putting in a number of roles throughout). Anthology movies do seem to be making somewhat of a comeback as of late and have a bit of a tendency of “trying too hard...

Image
Stars: Charlie Bond, James Hamer-Morton, Justin Chinyere, Dani Thompson, Faith Elizabeth, Megan Rose Buxton, Carrie Thompson, Liz Soutar, Annabella Rich, Lancelot Narayan, Rohin Dale, David Schaal | Written and Directed by Pat Higgins

On the eve of a televised talent show, an enthusiastic but dysfunctional cheerleading troop is on the brink of falling apart. But when a cursed necklace turns their rival boy band act into a screeching gang of zombies, the girls must learn to use their wits, friendship, and assorted power tools—before the TV finale takes a turn for the apocalyptic…

You know, I had no idea I needed another horror musical in my life after Anna and the Apocalypse but Powertool Cheerleaders vs. The Boyband of the Screeching Dead proved me wrong!

Much like Eating Miss Campbell, which also featured Charlie Bond and James Hamer-Morton, Powertool Cheerleaders vs. The Boyband of the Screeching Dead feels very much like a Troma movie.

Stars: Lyndsey Craine, Lala Barlow, Vito Trigo, James Hamer-Morton, Charlie Bond, Emily Haigh, Michaela Longden, Sierra Summers, Alexander J Skinner, Justin A. Martell, Annabella Rich, Dani Thompson, Laurence R. Harvey | Written and Directed by Liam Regan

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, despite the obvious age difference, I share writer-director Liam Regan’s fondness for satellite TV channel Bravo – especially during the “horned devil” logo years, where late nights were made up of cult TV shows, weird obscure films and a Ton of Troma movies. So much so that I too consider that period of the channel as a now legendary time in UK broadcasting. It was the channel that introduced me to a wider range of Troma movies outside of The Toxic Avenger and Class of Nuke’Em High (which were stalwarts of my local video shop And that guy that used to rent tapes...

‘Saltwater: The Battle for Ramree Island’ Review
Image
Stars: Steven Dolton, Ryan Harvey, Glenn Salvage, Jas Steven Singh, Charlie Bond, David Hon Ma Chu, Tony Lau | Written and Directed by Steve Lawson

Independent Midlands filmmaker Steve Lawson, whose last film, Bram Stoker’s Van Helsing, was a surprising take on the Dracula mythos, is back behind the camera for and altogether different beast – literally – killer crocodile come war film Saltwater: The Battle for Ramree Island. Which is apparently based on a true story…

That true story is the titular battle, which took place in 1945, during the Second World War, when the Allied army invaded Ramree to establish airbases to support the Allies mainland invasion plans. However the mangrove swamps of the island, and the nearby Cheduba Island, were apparently home to a bevy of saltwater crocodiles – enough that the crocodiles massacre of the occupying Japanese soldiers has been called the “worst crocodile disaster in the world”.

The film which,...

‘Bram Stoker’s Van Helsing’ DVD Review
Image
Stars: Charlie Bond, Helen Crevel, Tom Hendryk, Joe Street, Mark Topping | Written and Directed by Steve Lawson

I know what you’re thinking… “Oh my god, not another take on Bram Stoker’s Dracula?!” Mainly because I was thinking the same too. But there’s a very good reason this film is called Bram Stoker’s Van Helsing and not Dracula. Because Dracula is nowhere to be seen in this film!

The film tells the story of Arthur Holmwood’s fiancée Lucy (Charlie Bond), who falls victim to a mysterious illness. Turning to a former love rival, Dr John Seward, for help; Seward calls in his mentor, Professor Van Helsing, who quickly uncovers the terrifying truth – the illness that afflicts Lucy is in fact a vampires curse, and the only cure is a fresh supply of human blood. The discovery of several bodies each drained of their blood forces Van...

Impressions: Curse of the Witching Tree
Do you remember having a favorite tree growing up? Maybe you shared your first kiss underneath its leafy branches, rested against its gnarled bark while reading your favorite paperbacks, or even used it as the safe spot in games of base tag with your friends. Well, the titular timber in Curse of the Witching Tree isn’t that type of tree, and in his feature film directing debut, James Crow effectively shows its horrifying historical roots.

Siblings Emma and Jake Thorson weren’t thrilled about moving to St. Jonas farm in the first place, but they find more to fear than feeding the pigs when the spirits of nine slain children begin to pop up on the grounds. Unfortunately for the teenager and her younger brother, their mom isn’t buying into their supernatural theories—she’s understandably preoccupied with the condition of her husband, who’s been in a...
