The killer Santa is back. Over forty years since it first outraged audiences and delighted horror fans, Silent Night, Deadly Night is being reimagined for a new generation. Slated to open in US cinemas on 12 December 2025, the remake stars Halloween Ends actor Rohan Campbell in the role of Billy Chapman, the traumatised orphan turned axe-wielding Christmas avenger.

Directed and written by Wrong Turn’s Mike P. Nelson, the new film arrives via Cineverse, whose recent output includes the Terrifier franchise. The teaser trailer, released over Comic-Con weekend, leans heavily into the retro slasher aesthetic of its predecessor, while promising a slick, modern approach to the festive carnage.

The original Silent Night, Deadly Night, released in 1984, caused a national controversy due to its marketing, which prominently featured a killer dressed as Father Christmas. Entertainment studio Cineverse made a significant impact at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, presenting new material from two highly anticipated, non-rated theatrical releases: the reboot of The Toxic Avenger and a new installment in the Silent Night, Deadly Night franchise.

The studio’s presence was highlighted by a Hall H panel for The Toxic Avenger, which featured an exclusive first-look clip from the forthcoming horror-comedy. The panel included a formidable lineup of talent associated with the project. Writer and director Macon Blair was present, alongside the iconic co-founder of Troma Entertainment, Lloyd Kaufman. They were joined by a distinguished cast, including Peter Dinklage, Elijah Wood, Jacob Tremblay, and Taylour Paige. A surprise video message from cast member Kevin Bacon, who was unable to attend, was also presented to the audience. In conjunction with the panel, it was announced that tickets for the film’s theatrical run are now available for purchase.

Since then, the trailer for Silent Night, Deadly Night was posted online for the satisfaction of horror hounds who like their holiday season to be less jolly and more gory. Judging from the trailer, it is safe to say that the Christmas horror feature might be one of the most unhinged and violent of the year.

Fear begins with the sound of a tape being placed in a Vcr followed by extremely glitchy footage of author Rom Jennings being interviewed about his upcoming book, a non-fiction work on the mythology surrounding fear. Among other things, he mentions needing to take a research trip to a particular area in Northern California.
