Chappie 2 is highly unlikely to happen due to the box office underperformance of the first movie, which failed to turn a profit. Director Neill Blomkamp has ruled out a sequel to Chappie, acknowledging the movie's failure and its impact on his career. The inclusion of controversial rap duo Die Antwoord in the original Chappie is another reason why a sequel is unlikely, as their alleged abusive behavior has tarnished their reputation and would deter any major Hollywood studio from working with them.
While fans might be clamoring for more of the self-aware robot, there's a reason why Chappie 2 will never happen. Neill Blomkamp made a huge impression with his wildly ambitious 2009 debut District 9 which managed to combine gory action and fantastic effects while examining topics like xenophobia and racism through a sci-fi lens. The movie also introduced audiences to the mad genius of leading man Sharlto Copley. Blomkamp and...

Perhaps taking their cues from Riff Raff’s “how to stay semi-relevant” playbook, Ninja and Yo-Landi Visser of Die Antwoord are pissed at Suicide Squad director David Ayer for “jockin” their group style. The aforementioned Riff Raff was once (maybe still is?) angry that James Franco borrowed his terrible aesthetic for his performance as Alien in Spring Breakers. Now, Ninja and Yo-Landi are livid about various elements of the critically reviled DC movie.
Yolandi posted her grievances to Instagram in the form of a video slideshow featuring apparent evidence of the similarities. The examples? Jared Leto’s Joker, like Ninja, is tattooed and often shirtless. Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, like Yolandi, wears a bunch of watches. The Ninja comparison seems like a far more legitimate gripe, even though the video also pairs an image of the Joker next to one of Marilyn Manson, which would seem to imply that...

2015 was a rough year for America, but it ended up being a pretty terrific year for film. Still, there were a group of movies that ended up disappointing me because I didn’t think they fully lived up to their potential. I suspect your list won’t look exactly like mine since we all go into movies with different expectations and different levels of anticipation, but here, in no particular order, are my six biggest movie disappointments of this year in film.
Avengers: Age of Ultron
I’ve voiced this concern elsewhere on the site already, but to me, Avengers: Age of Ultron marked a major turning point in the history of Marvel Studios. It was the first time I thought there was simply too much going on at once — too many characters, too many story beats, too many side quests — to the point where it made me almost completely check out of the film.

Every year of movies seems to have a dominant theme. Half way through the year, it seems the focus is on artificial intelligence. It's well documented on the site of our fervent love for Alex Garland's Ex Machina that so eloquently dealt with the matter of A.I. and humanity's coexistence (read Brad's interview with Alex here). Heck, even Marvel touched on the subject with Avengers: Age of Ultron. Those are most fresh in our mind, but on June 16, Neill Blomkamp's Chappie will hit shelves on Blu-ray and DVD to remind moviegoers it was the first film to kick off the year of A.I. Of course, of the three, Chappie garnered less than stellar reviews (check out Brad's theatrical review). But just like the titular android, it's a flawed yet misunderstood piece worthy of reinspection. Part of the negative reception likely has to do with...

As reviews for Neill Blomkamp's "Chappie" made clear, not everyone is a fan of South African rappers Die Antwoord. The presence of Ninja and Yo-Landi Visser were a make or break component for many, and even for some of the people working on the actual movie. According to actor Brandon Auret, who plays the gangster big bad Hippo, Ninja had caused "tension" on the set, and reports from South African press last year suggested the rapper was causing no shortage of problems, even claiming he was written out of scenes (though upon seeing the final film, and how much of a central role he plays, it doesn't seem like that was the case at all). But now, Ninja has responded. In a piece over at Boing Boing, Ninja addressed the rumors in his own unique fashion, and offers his own portrait of what he saw on set, particularly when...

Columbia Pictures (Sony) released their new action/sci-fi flick, "Chappie," into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out, and thought it was very entertaining with lots of great action and intense drama. However, I have to say that the storyline got a bit silly there towards the end with transferring people's consciousness inside a robot's body and what not, but whatever. It stars: Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver, Dev Patel, Sharlto Copley, Jose Pablo Cantillo, Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er. In the new flick, the Johannesburg, the South African government purchased new, cutting-edge series of armour-plated, semi-a.I. operated attack robots from weapons manufacturer, TetravaalIn, in an effort to reduce the notoriously high crime rate in the area. They proved to be an instant success. Back at the company's Johannesburg plant, the robot's designer, Deon Wilson, attracts the anger of Vincent Moore (hugh Jackman), an Australian engineer whose own design,...

Columbia Pictures (Sony) released their new action/sci-fi film, "Chappie," into theaters this weekend, and all the top, major movie critics have delivered their reviews, and it turns out that their opinions were sort of mixed ,overall, as it got a total 40 score out of a possible 100 across 37 reviews at the Metacritic.com site. The film stars: Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver, Dev Patel, Sharlto Copley, Jose Pablo Cantillo, Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er. We've listed blurbs from a couple of the critics, below. Mick Lasalle over at the San Francisco Chronicle, gave it a 75 grade, stating: " It’s a good sci-fi action movie, too. Far be it from me to give this movie the kiss of death by making it seem too serious for its core audience. Chappie is everything it has to be — but it’s everything it should be, too." Bill Zwecker from the Chicago Sun-Times, gave it a 63 score,...

Now that you've seen it, what did you think? "I'm consciousness. I'm alive. I'm Chappie." It's time for more sci-fi. Director Neill Blomkamp (of District 9, Elysium) returns with his third feature, Chappie, set in a near-future South Africa about a robot given life through artificial intelligence. Sharlto Copley stars as Chappie the robot (in motion capture) with Dev Patel, Ninja & Yo-Landi Visser (of Die Antwoord), Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and Jose Pablo Cantillo. So how is Blomkamp's new robot movie - any good? Better than Elysium, same as District 9? How are the human characters compared to Chappie? If you've seen it, leave a comment below with your own thoughts on Neill Blomkamp's new sci-fi Chappie. Spoiler Warning: We strongly urge everyone to actually see the film before reading ahead, as there may be spoilers below. We also encourage all commenters to keep major spoilers from the film to a minimum,...

As Neill Blomkamp's "Chappie" rolls into cinemas, word emerged earlier this week about the rumored contentious behavior of Die Antwoord rapper Ninja on the set of the movie. And indeed, along with collaborator Yo-Landi Visser, the pair have been notably absent from the press mill for the sci-fi flick. But Boing Boing sat down for a great, half hour talk with Ninja about the movie that is a must watch. The rapper discusses his long friendship with Blomkamp, who had initially cast him as "Elysium" (where he would've had to speak in an American accent), before scheduling forced him out. Ninja also confirms that Yo-Landi was in contention for David Fincher's "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," but again, the timing didn't work. Ultimately it didn't matter, because Blomkamp's "raw blockbuster" perfectly captured Die Antwoord's "Zef style," and Ninja describes the movie as a "raw blockbuster" that's "punk as fuck.

Chicago – Who would think a robot movie would teach us about being more intuitively “human”? “Chappie” is a very peculiar film – with fighting robots, violence and grit on one side, and the tenderness of finding a nurturing source and a consciousness on the other. It is worth experiencing.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Neill Blomkamp, the director of the Oscar nominated “District 9” and 2013’s “Elysium,” is no stranger to bleak world views, and often uses this perspective as a means to a larger perspective. “Chappie” is no exception, as the meaning of consciousness and nurturing come through the bang-bang of warring criminal gangs and robot police officers. Blomkamp also uses his allegories in strange and sometimes off putting ways, and while “Chappie” has some of those bizarre sidetracks, sticking with the film all the way will yield some very thoughtful rewards.
Johannesburg, South Africa, is a lawless city that has lost the means of enforcement of social order.

Look at this: From the writer/director of District 9. Wickus. Ripley. Slumdog. Die Antwoord. Wolverine with a mullet. Ed-209 meeRobocop 2. How Is This Movie Not Going To Be Amazing?
My mom saw a TV spot for Chappie and asked me what I knew about it. I told her to think of it as Short Circuit for adults. In reality that’s not too far off, but director Neill Blomkamp’s three feature films have all been a sum of their parts from genre films of the past. He’s claimed James Cameron’s Aliens as his favorite film, and is close with Peter Jackson who also knows a lot about splatter gore and epic scale. Chappie has major influence from the first two Robocop films, both Short Circuit films, and The Fifth Element among others. If you're heading to the multiplex this weekend there's a good chance that you'll be catching a movie starring Dev Patel. It's a rare occurrence for any actor, but the "Slumdog Millionaire" breakout has the fortune of having two different films open in the U.S. today. In Neill Blomkamp's "Chappie," Patel plays a robotics designer and computer programmer who brings the title character to life in a dangerous and unstable environment. His other new release is Fox Searchlight's "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," where he reprises his role as Sonny, a young entrepreneur who runs what is effectively a retirement home for British Expats in Jaipur, India. The surviving members of this geriatric crew, including Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton and Celia Imrie, are all back for more life affirming adventures as Richard Gere checks in to stir things up. Don't worry, the venerable Maggie Smith...

iRobot: Blomkamp’s Latest Sentimentally Inclined Sci-Fi is Pleasantly Familiar
Sentient technological constructs and expanding the definition of what constitutes the essence of consciousness as it applies to the essence of humanity is at the core of Neill Blomkamp’s latest feature, Chappie, so named for the eponymous, experimentally self-aware robot at the heart of his narrative. It is almost impossible to discuss the film without acknowledging many of its derivative elements, namely the film’s striking similarity to RoboCop (either version) and the family friendly sentiments of Short Circuit, and because of this, the film’s larger ideas feel too familiar, which undercuts Blomkamp’s ability to truly reach the poignant potential of the material.
There are a handful of emotionally rewarding sequences, but Blomkamp’s attentions are saturated by the film’s innovative protagonist to such a degree that most of the supporting players are reduced to archetypes,...

Oh, Chappie… you magnificent bastard. We love you so!
Writer-director Neill Blomkamp pushes all his chips onto the table with this fascinating sci-fi gamble that dares you not to be entertained. Derivative, ultra-violent, and completely baffling, Chappie also manages to be insightful and sweet at times. This technically-accomplished and thematically-suspect robot melodrama has something for everyone to love (and hate). Mostly, it offers the giddy exhilaration of a movie that’s determined to tell its story, no matter how bat-shit crazy it is.
You didn’t know that you wanted to hear Sigourney Weaver scream, “Destroy that robot!” or that you needed a mash-up of District 9, Short Circuit, RoboCop, and Real Steel about a robot gangbanger who talks and acts like Jar Jar Binks. Luckily, Chappie exists so you can see what you’ve been missing.

Chappie is a nugget of an idea, a poorly developed "RoboCop meets Short Circuit" at best, with a story and characters so dumbed down it's almost amazing they were able to piece it together and call it a movie. It's supremely lacking in motivation or reason to exist, logic of any kind, and featuring a cast of characters I hesitate to even call "one note". To give these characters credit for anything beyond their ability to fill space on a screen would be to compare the Berlin Philharmonic to a two-year-old banging on a Playskool xylophone, and it's about as irritating as the latter for the bulk of its two hour duration. There is nothing redeeming about any one of the human characters and yet I can't tell if writer/director Neill Blomkamp (co-writing with Terri Tatchell) expects us to feel anything for any of them. I'm sure, on some level,...

District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp has the geek world in a tizzy right now over his proposed Alien sequel, perhaps slightly overshadowing the fact that he actually has a new film coming out.
Robo-comedy Chappie is another original blockbuster that blends propulsive action with high-minded science fiction ideas. It might not have been intentional, but it’s fortunate that Fox pushed out the news of Neill Blomkamp’s Instagram post-turned-"Alien" sequel before the release of "Chappie," since the reviews of his third feature are enough to quell anyone’s enthusiasm for his next project. It seemed impossible that the movie could be as bad as its advance publicity, which promised something like a rehash of Blomkamp’s cult favorite "District 9" and its near-disastrous followup, "Elysium" with the Steve Guttenberg classic "Short Circuit." But based on the initial round of reviews — and the fact that the movie’s not being screened for press at all in much of the country — it seems it is just that bad.
The plot, from what one can garner between critics’ howls of pain, involves a robot designer played Dev Patel in a near-future Johannesburg who wants to rejigger his crime-fighting creations to more existential ends.

Neill Blomkamp is on everyone's radar now that he's been chosen to direct the new Alien movie. His latest effort, Chappie, might fuel the raging debate, as it shows a weird mixture of sci-fi within the gangsta universe of rap band Die Antwoord. Chappie revolves around Deon (Dev Patel), a developer who's unlocked the key to give robots their own consciousness. Things go bad when he's kidnapped by Ninja, Yo-Landi and America, three petty thieves who need to commit a big heist to reimburse their debts. In the meantime, Deon's jealous co-worker Vincent (Hugh Jackman) is looking at every possibility to convince their boss Michelle Bradley (Sigourney Weaver) to let him use his massive, deadly robot as the new police force. Despite having many aesthetic...

To get you prepared for the month ahead, we're breaking down the five movies we're most looking forward to this March, along with an indie honorable mention. Here are the best movies awaiting you in the weeks ahead!

Director Neill Blomkamp's Chappie marks the acting debuts of South African rappers Ninja and Yo-landi Visser from the group Die Antwoord. Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings - some good, some bad - and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there's one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. "It was hell. That's what hell is. You relive the worst moment of your life on a loop over and over and you can never wake up." Welcome to another video round-up! This time around, we have a new trailer for Fox's Wayward Pines TV series starring Matt Dillon, a hellish new clip from The Lazarus Effect, as well as two snippets from Neill Blomkamp's upcoming artificial intelligence film, Chappie.
Wayward Pines: "Based on the best-selling novel, “Pines,” by Blake Crouch, and brought to life by suspenseful storyteller M. Night Shyamalan (“The Sixth Sense,” “Signs,”), Wayward Pines is an intense, mind-bending new thriller in which nothing is what it seems. Secret Service agent Ethan Burke (Academy Award nominee Matt Dillon, “Crash,” “City of Ghosts”) arrives in the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, ID, on a mission to find two missing federal agents. But instead of answers, Ethan’s investigation only turns up more questions.

Yesterday news broke that Neill Blomkamp will actually get to make his Alien film. Today we get our first clip from his upcoming film Chappie. Drones and artificial intelligence are fast becoming a hot topic in today’s world, and it’s a topic Neill has obviously tapped into for this film.
If you were a fan of Distract 9 and Elysium (which I was, yes even Elysium) it looks like you can expect a similar style and tone with Chappie.
One question, why does there seem to be subtitles for some of the characters who are clearly speaking English? Oh yea, accents are bad.

Director: Neill Blomkamp // Writers: Neill Blomkamp, Terri Tatchell
After the unprecedented success of his debut, District 9 (2009), South African director Neill Blomkamp thankfully avoided stepping right into a sequel, instead making his next film, Elysium (2013). Even though it was another grunge dystopia and was less well received, Blomkamp proves to be an innovative genre filmmaker, one of few filmmakers who can do a lot with a small budget and still retain an authorial voice when cast into the studio system. We have high hopes for his latest, which sounds to be a different angle from the filmmaker still working within preferred parameters. Based on his own 2006 short film, Blomkamp’s latest is Chappie, the tale of a robot kidnapped by two criminals and growing up under these strange familial circumstances as he grows into a prodigy. Blomkamp famously cast the members of provocative South African rap-rave group Die Antwoord,...

There's a good amount of new footage featured in this latest UK trailer for Neill Blomkamp's incredibly cool-looking Chappie. I kind of like that Hugh Jackman plays an asshole villain in this. Most of the characters that he plays are likable, but in this one he comes off as being a major prick. It's a good change for him. Chappie has the potential to be a great film, and I can't wait to see it.

There are a few overlaps of scenes from the first Chappie trailer to the latest, including a bit where the title robot watches and mimics the cartoon He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. You’d think this was from the same studio putting together a new Masters of the Universe movie. Oh right, they’re both Sony. Synergy! Interestingly, Sony is also one of the studios behind last year’s RoboCop remake and they own the company that made Short Circuit (but not the rights to its planned remake), and those are two movies that are very much felt in this new feature from Neill Blomkamp. That’s not a complaint, because this looks much better than both of those things. Sure, the line “I am consciousness. I am alive. I am Chappie!” doesn’t have the same ring as the rhyming “Johnny Five is Alive!” but then Short Circuit doesn’t have Die Antwoord. Nor...

"A thinking robot could be the end of mankind!" Sony Pictures has unveiled the second trailer for Neill Blomkamp's third sci-fi feature, titled Chappie, about a young robot being raised in a violent world. This is the second trailer we've seen following the first teaser for Chappie, and it has a completely different tone, focusing on the comedy that leads to the tragedy in the end. At least they're not holding back showing the social-political angle. Dev Patel stars, with Die Antwoord's Yo-Landi & Ninja plus Sharlto Copley as Chappie. We also get a few more glimpses of the bad guys: Hugh Jackman with a mullet, and Sigourney Weaver. This looks really, really good - even after Elysium I'm still excited for Blomkamp's latest creation. This year is shaping up to be a big one for film. When all the studios started slating their franchises, sequels, and reboots, it seemed like a fair share of them fell into the 2015 release calendar. Indeed, a number of high-profile studio releases will hit theaters this year (though 2015’s three superhero movies pales in comparison to 2016’s six), but we’re also poised to get a pleasant variety of dramas and comedies, from the high profile to the small-scale, and—gasp—even a couple of original stories! And when it comes to talent, this year's crop of films includes new works from Richard Linklater, Guillermo del Toro, Terrence Malick, J.J. Abrams, Judd Apatow, Danny Boyle, Robert Zemeckis, Steven Spielberg, Noah Baumbach, Cameron Crowe, Brad Bird, and many, many more. With so much on tap for 2015, Adam, Matt, Perri, and Haleigh have put together a list of some of their...

As someone with a soft spot for pet-like creatures, I’ve had my eye on Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie since the moment it was announced. The film focuses on Sharlto Copley’s Chappie, the first robot with the ability to think for himself. As a big fan of District 9, I was mildly disappointed by Elysium, but it looks as though Chappie will be more in line with the former, tackling a big topic on an intimate, character-driven level. The new trailer is certainly loaded with sweet moments, a favorite of which is watching Chappie spend some quality time with a dog, but I’m not really seeing the comedy in it. It’s a little darker than expected but with some charm and sentimentality in the mix, somewhat reminiscent of E.T., and that combination works exceedingly well. Hit the jump to check out the first Chappie trailer and to...

Leave it to District 9 writer-director Neill Blomkamp to tap the humanity lurking inside a robot. The futurist filmmaker’s R-rated sci-fi action-adventure Chappie (due in theaters Mar. 6) follows an experimental humanoid who’s abducted by criminals (Yo-Landi Vi$$er and Ninja of the South African rave-rap act Die Antwoord) en route to an Artificial Intelligence day of reckoning. Will Chappie’s capacity to think and feel for himself result in “the next step in evolution”? The film’s trailer—which makes its exclusive debut at EW—showcases the motion-capture performance of Blomkamp muse Sharlto Copley (Elysium, District 9) as the titular robot.
