It’s been a long time coming, but Marvel’s “Ironheart” is here, with the first three episodes now streaming on Disney+.

The series reunites fans with Riri Williams, a tech prodigy attending MIT who we first met back in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” But, after the events of that film, Riri is back home in Chicago, and that means a whole new set of friends and coworkers to meet.

Here’s who you need to know in the series.

Riri Williams is a tech prodigy, hellbent on creating an even better suit than Tony Stark ever did. She’s played by Dominique Thorne, who fans first met as the character in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Prior to that, Thorne starred in “If Beale Street Could Talk” and “Judas and the Black Messiah.”

Ironheart is now out with its first three episodes, and people seem divided on it. The show picks up where Black Panther: Wakanda Forever left off, showing Riri Williams being kicked out of MIT. She had broken school rules to fund her big tech ideas, and now she’s stuck without a clear future.

Not long after that, Riri runs into a mysterious guy named The Hood. He leads a gang that targets corrupt rich people and blackmails them. But it’s not just street crime, The Hood has a magical cloak that lets him disappear and do things that clearly don’t follow the laws of science.

If you’ve read the comics, you’ll know The Hood got his powers by selling his soul. The show hasn’t said that outright, but it’s dropping plenty of hints, and fans are already connecting the dots.

Now that we have the basic pieces in place, Ironheart can let Riri move forward. However, the series immediately jumps back into the discussion about Natalie because, frankly, it’s a shocking bit of wish fulfillment. Already, Ironheart correctly identifies the weird moral dilemma of bringing one’s best friend back from the dead, and it makes “Will the Real Natalie Please Stand Up?” one of the more interesting episodes of MCU TV to date.

When Ronnie knocks on Riri’s door, Riri lies to get her mom to go away.

Plot: Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri Williams — a young, genius inventor determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins aka “The Hood”.

Review: Announced in December 2020, Marvel Studios’ Ironheart is finally debuting on Disney+ almost three years after Dominique Thorne appeared as Riri Williams in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Since that film, the MCU has hit its lowest point both creatively and at the box office, leading Kevin Feige and the leadership at Marvel Studios to approach their small screen projects differently than they used to. Ironheart was developed with the aim of a multi-season approach despite being billed as a limited series.

After the announcement that Riri Williams would enter the MCU, Marvel Comics knew there was potential for a great new hero. After all, Riri had established herself as a new kind of teen hero, helping to usher in a new class of Marvel heroes for new readers to connect with. Ironheart looks to build on our MCU introduction to Riri, and with more space for her background and potential to come into view, the latest Marvel TV series is a winner. When the character Riri Williams (played by Dominique Thorne) made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut back in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the idea was that we’d be seeing the character again the following year in her own six-episode Disney+ show Ironheart… but 2023 came and went without Ironheart, and so did 2024. Now we know that we’ll finally have the chance to watch the show on June 24th – and in anticipation of that premiere date, a behind-the-scenes featurette has dropped online, mixing footage from the show with clips of interviews with cast members and producers (including Black Panther director Ryan Coogler). Much of the footage in the featurette has been seen before, in either the trailer embedded above or the second trailer, but there’s a bit of new footage in the mix as well – and some of that footage has stirred up villain speculation among Marvel Comics fans.

Ironheart will be the best of multiple corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, according to Ryan Coogler. The Black Panther director, who is an executive producer on Ironheart, recently compared the upcoming Disney+ series to three well-received and beloved MCU projects.

In an interview with Marvel.com, Coogler unpacked how Ironheart would blend the realism of the McU's street-level shows with the franchise's mystical side. "Riri [Williams] is definitely in conversation with a street-level show like Daredevil. You’ve got characters trying — both heroes and villains — to make do with what they have," Coogler explained. "Then you combine that with cosmic Marvel, characters who would be at home in Doctor Strange or WandaVision. That [mix] of street-level Marvel and magical Marvel is a pretty crazy combination."

Surprisingly, Coogler does not compare Ironheart to Black Panther or Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the latter of which is where Dominique Thorne's Riri Williams made her MCU debut.

2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever did the usual Marvel thing and laid some ground for future projects that had been announced. Other than the sequel establishing Shuri as the new Black Panther, the Ryan Coogler film also introduced a college student who would be taking up the mantle of Tony Stark with her own brand of Iron armor. The setup could lend itself to both the Ironheart show and the planned Armor Wars project, but after some years, the studio is finally set to premiere the series this summer on June 24 on Disney+.

There are some great clips from Ironheart featured in the Disney+ teaser, which also reveals new looks at Chad Powers, The Bear Season 4, and Andor Season 2, as well as fellow MCU series Daredevil: Born Again. In the below trailer and screengrabs, Dominique Thorne's Riri Williams is shown working on and piloting her new Ironheart armor, which looks more refined and sleeker than the model she used in 2022's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. There is also a new shot of Anthony Ramos' Parker Robbins/The Hood, an old friend of Riri's from Chicago, who looks to have received some damage on the lower left side of his face.

A new copyright filing for Ironheart confirmed that Sacha Baron Cohen is part of the cast for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe series.

Cohen, who is best known for his creation and portrayal of the fictional satirical characters Ali G and Borat Sagdiyev, is credited as "Mystery Man" in a recent Ironheart copyright filing on the U.S. Copyright Office Public Records System. Baron Cohen has been rumored to appear in Ironheart since October 2022, although Marvel has yet to officially confirm his involvement in the Disney+ miniseries until now. Fargo star Anji White has joined the cast of Marvel Studios' Ironheart as a series regular.

According to Deadline, the actor is believed to be playing Riri William's mom, Ronnie, in the upcoming Disney+ series, which is set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. White is perhaps best known for playing Dibrell Smutny in the fourth season of Fargo. Other acting credits include guest appearances on Empire, Chicago Med, Chicago P.D. and 4400. Ironheart, the latest Marvel Studios television series at Disney+, has cast Sonia Denis in an as-yet-unnamed role, according to a report from Variety. Denis recently garnered an Emmy nomination as part of the writing staff on A Black Lady Sketch Show from HBO, having previously worked on Guilty Party for Paramount+. Her acting credits include High Maintenance, Brown Girls, Birdgirl and BoJack Horseman.

The “Ironheart” series at Disney+ has added Sonia Denis to its cast, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.

Denis joins series lead Dominique Thorne in the Marvel Studios series alongside cast members Manny Montana, Alden Ehrenreich, Anthony Ramos, and Lyric Ross among others. Details on who Denis will play are being kept under wraps.

The show follows Marvel character Riri Williams (Thorne), a genius inventor and the creator of the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man.

Comedy Central has revealed the talent list and premiere date for The New Negroes with Baron Vaughn and Open Mike Eagle, a new music and comedy series debuting on Friday, April 19 at 11:00 p.m. Et/Pt on Comedy Central and simulcast on Bet.
