Ellis Review: Uncovering Deeper Layers
Image
Step into the shoes of Dci Sharon D. Clarke as she takes on her newest role, Inspector Ellis. This police procedural drama follows Ellis, a detective chief inspector who lends her expertise to cases small-town police can’t crack. As an outside investigator parachuted in to assess troublesome situations, Ellis ruffles feathers. But her skills can’t be denied.

Bringing a quiet, focused intensity to each investigation, Ellis navigates not just mysteries but also the prejudices that come with being a black female officer. When prejudice shuts some doors, her perspicacity opens others. Through it all, Ellis’ allegiance remains firmly with justice.

In the opening episodes, Ellis finds herself assisting officers in a rural district where a swimming champion’s death and his girlfriend’s disappearance plunge a community into unease. As Ellis quietly yet doggedly examines this tangled case, she also probes the biases within the force she’s joined.

The Winter King Episode 8 Teases The Book's Massive Rivalry Twist & King Arthur's Tragic Mistake
Image
This article contains discussion of sexual assault.

Major spoilers for The Winter King episodes 1-8 and The Warlord Chronicles books below!

The TV series adaptation of The Winter King has been patient in introducing characters from Arthurian myth, with Guinevere being wed to Arthur by episode 7. The show questions the existence of magic in the world of The Winter King, despite the presence of Merlin and Nimue who worship the "Old Gods." Arthur's alliance with Christians poses a conflict with their pagan beliefs. Arthur and Nimue's friendship is strained due to the former's decision to pardon and free King Gundleus, who assaulted Nimue. Like in the novels, this sets the stage for a bitter rivalry between them in the future.

A clip from The Winter King episode 8 hints at a big rivalry twist from the novels. MGM+'s latest series adapts Bernard Cornwell's The Warlord Chronicles trilogy of books,...

The Winter King EPs Talk Developing Fresh Take On Arthurian Legend & Long-Term Show Plans
Image
The Winter King is a fresh and brutal adaptation of the King Arthur legend set in the Post-Roman Dark Age of Britain. The show combines the high-stakes politics of Game of Thrones with the intimate set pieces of the Arthurian legend. Executive producers Julie Gardner and Lachlan MacKinnon discuss the show's authenticity, the portrayal of female characters, and the casting of Stuart Campbell as Derfel.

The legend of King Arthur gets a fresh and brutal new take with The Winter King. Adapted from Bernard Cornwell's Warlord Chronicles trilogy of novels, the historical fiction novel acts as a retelling of Arthur's rise to become a king of Britain, setting the story in the Post-Roman Dark Age of the country and finding him trying to work his way back from banishment with the support of Merlin, Nimue, Morgan, and Derfel and put a stop to the invading Saxons.

New Show Is The Perfect Outlander Replacement While Waiting For Season 7's Return
Image
Outlander is going on hiatus after its midseason finale and will not return until a later date, leaving fans eagerly waiting for its comeback. The Winter King, a new historical fiction series, premieres on August 20, 2023, and could be a perfect replacement for Outlander during its hiatus. The Winter King has similar elements to Outlander, including historical drama, action sequences, and even overlapping cast members, making it an ideal substitute.

Outlander is going on hiatus following its midseason finale on August 11, 2023, and the historical drama series sadly won't return until an unannounced later date. Starz split the show's seventh season in two, so the first half has already aired, and the second half will drop sometime later next year. However, in the meantime, fans of the television series can look forward to a new show that could fill the void left by Outlander's absence.

Outlander season 7, episode 8, concluded many stories...
