The Pitt Could Get The Spin-Off That Fans Have Been Begging For
Image
This article contains a discussion of mass violence.

Just in case you forgot, "The Pitt" — the massively successful medical drama that concluded its first season on Max in early April — is not a spin-off of "ER," even though three different veterans of that medical drama helped create it in the first place. Star and executive producer Noah Wyle, alongside creatives John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill, set out to make something distinct that paid homage to their previous work ... but with all that said, could "The Pitt" get a spin-off any time soon?

Fans are absolutely clamoring for a show that could simply be titled "The Pitt: Night Shift," thanks in large part to the show's "real-time" structure (season 1 takes place across every hour of a 15-hour shift led by Wyle's Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch) that introduces the night shift doctors and nurses partway through the season. In an interview with TVLine's Ryan Schwartz,...

Ghosts of the Void Review | Horror That Harnesses Our Inner Anxieties
Image
Ghosts of the Void is a fascinating and beautifully rich slow-burn thriller that delves deep into the fragility of the human psyche, and how easily it can crumble when faced with adversity. While its premise is fairly simple, Ghosts of the Void shines with its economic commentary and relatable themes of anxiety and stress, all of which give this 2023 indie horror its richness and depth.

Making his feature film debut, writer/director Jason Miller creates an undeniably haunting horror film. Through tension, heart-pounding music, and creepy imagery, Miller crafts an astonishingly eerie atmosphere. Its characters are engaging, and the performances from Tedra Millan and Michael Reagan are outstanding. Miller blasts his way onto the scene with the surprisingly impactful Ghosts of the Void, and it's easy to imagine it being on year-end best-of lists for horror and thriller fans.

Image
"What do you want?!" Slated has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror film called Ghosts of the Void, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Jason Miller. After playing at fests this year, it is set to debut in November on VOD and in limited theaters in October. Spending the night in her car, a newly homeless woman wrestles with exhaustion, her crumbling marriage, and the threat of mysterious, masked strangers. "Jason Miller carefully crafts a riveting, slow-burn thriller that delves deep into the psychological depths of a crumbling marriage stuck in the middle of nowhere. Ghosts of the Void exposes the fragility of the human psyche in the face of adversity, while leaving audiences to question the thin line between reality and the supernatural." How's that for a pitch? The film stars Tedra Millan and Michael Reagan. Looks a bit scrappy, but there seems to be a strong intent in this film,...

Popcorn Frights 2023 Capsule Reviews: From Horror Musical ‘Big Easy Queens’ to Experimental ‘Psychosis’
Image
The Popcorn Frights Film Festival is currently underway, both in-person and virtually, unleashing a variety of premieres and events.

Now at the halfway point, the programming still has plenty of horror to come.

Here’s a round-up of some of Popcorn Frights’ feature offerings so far, from musical horror comedies to experimental mindbenders.

Big Easy Queens

Rivalries, betrayal, murder, sisterhood, and musical glamour ensue in the horror-tinged Big Easy Queens from director Erynn Dalton and writer Robert Leleux. Made in Florida but set in New Orleans, the film follows French Quarter mob queen Minnie Bouvèé (Eric Swanson) and her rivalry with nemesis Poodles Makenzie (Jennifer McClain). Their bitter feud for Big Easy domination escalates when Minnie’s estranged sister Mimi (Benajmin Shaevitz) resurfaces, and the body count rises, though Poodles may not be to blame.

What Big Easy Queen lacks in budget, it makes up for in dazzling musical numbers and charming camaraderie between queens.

Watch: Moving Out in 'Daddy's Girl' Short Film Made by Lena Hudson
Image
"Is this what he's into? There's always something about him I never liked…" Time to move out!! Daddy's Girl is a short film that first premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, now available online to watch. Written & directed by filmmaker Lena Hudson, Daddy's Girl is an award-winning short film about a father/daughter relationship gone awry and the limits of our self-deceit - about a young woman whose charming but overbearing father helps her move out of her wealthy, older boyfriend's apartment. Starring Tedra Millan and Peter Friedman, plus Rhett Rossi. The two lead performances are what this film work, otherwise it might be a bit too cringe. But there's an awkardness that keeps it afloat, as it's a story about a woman who should rethink her choices (much like Shiva Baby which is similar to this). View below. ›››

Below is an overview of the plot of each play as well as the awards history of its author, cast, creative team, and the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.

“Death of a Salesman”

In the fifth Broadway revival of Arthur Miller’s 1949 drama, Willy Loman is a traveling salesman whose illusions of picture-perfect business and family life cave in on him. He and his family are caught up in the pressures and delusions of living the American dream.

The original production directed by Elia Kazan won six Tony Awards (including Best Play) and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. This staging follows a successful run on London’s West End back in 2019, where it received five Laurence Olivier...

Katy Keene Episode 9 Review – Chapter Nine: Wishin’ & a Hopin’
Tedra Millan
This Katy Keene review contains spoilers.

Katy Keene Episode 9

“Face it, you just dress up your anxieties in hearts and smiles.”

For a series to shake up its established formula nine episodes in is a dicey prospect. Then again, the stakes are so low on Katy Keene that any kind of narrative experimentation was unlikely to land with too hard of a thud. That said, it is appreciated that this installment broke up its plots into individual stories concerning Katy, Josie and Jorge – with Pepper being the lace applique masterfully connecting them all.

Pepper may be a con artist with a super shady past, but if there’s one thing that she has perfected during her years of pulling scams it is how to read people. In tonight’s atypical episode, she is the only one of our leads to not get a standalone subplot. Instead, her arc (involving someone...
