Why The Horrors of Dolores Roach Is a Must-See Horror TV Series of 2023
Image
The Horrors of Dolores Roach is a captivating dark-comedy horror series that challenges traditional horror tropes and offers a fresh perspective on the genre. The series features a compelling protagonist in Dolores Roach, portrayed by Justina Machado, who undergoes a nuanced and emotionally charged journey that blurs the lines between right and wrong. The visual aesthetics of the show, including set design and cinematography, create an immersive and chilling experience, while the unconventional storytelling techniques and social commentary add depth to the narrative.

Where horror meets humor, The Horrors of Dolores Roach comes as a compelling dark-comedy horror series that has captivated audiences with its unsettling charm. With chilling yet strangely amusing experiences, it’s based on the one-woman off-broadway play and podcast by Aaron Mark, Empanada Loca. It follows Dolores Roach, played by Justina Machado, as she’s released from an unjust 16-year prison sentence and returns to her...

The Horror of Dolores Roach: Blumhouse cannibal series cancelled after one season
The Horror of Dolores Roach (2023)
I was always under the impression that Blumhouse’s Prime Video cannibal series The Horror of Dolores Roach (read our review Here) was going to be an eight episode limited series, but apparently there was hope for a second season, because The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Prime Video has decided to cancel the show. So the eight episode first season is all we’re getting after all.

The news of the cancellation comes four months after all eight episodes of The Horror of Dolores Roach were released on the same day back in July.

Based on the Gimlet podcast of the same name, The Horror of Dolores Roach came from Blumhouse Television, Gimlet, and GloNation Studios. The show tells the following story: After serving a 16-year prison sentence, the title character (Machado) returns to a gentrified Washington Heights with $200 and the clothes on her back. Her boyfriend missing, her family long gone,...

“The Horror of Dolores Roach” Cancelled at Amazon After One Season
The Horror of Dolores Roach (2023)
Based on the hit podcast, Prime Video debuted the Amazon Original series “The Horror of Dolores Roach” this past July, and we’ve learned the series has been cancelled.

After just one season, “The Horror of Dolores Roach” is no more at Prime Video.

Justina Machado starred in the first season of “Dolores Roach.”

The eight-episode, half-hour series is a contemporary Sweeney Todd-inspired tale, a macabre urban legend of love, betrayal, weed, gentrification, cannibalism, and survival of the fittest.

In the series, “Dolores Roach is released from prison after 16 years and returns to a severely gentrified Washington Heights with $200 and the clothes on her back. Her boyfriend missing, her family long gone, Dolores reunites with an old stoner buddy, Luis, who gives her room and board and lets her give massages for cash in the basement under his dilapidated storefront, Empanada Loca, the only remnant of her former life.

‘The Horror of Dolores Roach,’ ‘Harlan Coben’s Shelter’ and ‘With Love’ Canceled at Amazon Prime Video
Image
There will be no new seasons of “The Horror of Dolores Roach,” “Harlan Coben’s Shelter” or “With Love” at Prime Video, the streamer announced on Tuesday.

Originally created by Aaron Mark as a one-woman play, “Empanada Loca,” Mark created, wrote, and directed the original podcast and penned the pilot script for “The Horror of Dolores Roach.” The series followed the titular character (played by Justina Machado), “who returns to a gentrified Washington Heights, where she reunites with an old stoner friend, Luis, who lets her live and work as a masseuse in the basement under his empanada shop. When the promise of her newfound stability is quickly threatened, ‘Magic Hands’ Dolores is driven to shocking extremes to survive,” reads the official description.

Mark also served as co-showrunner and executive producer with Dara Resnik, alongside executive producers Daphne Rubin-Vega, Jason Blum, Chris McCumber, Jeremy Gold and Chris Dickie for Blumhouse Television; Dawn Ostroff,...

‘The Horror of Dolores Roach’, ‘Harlan Coben’s Shelter’ & ‘With Love’ Canceled At Amazon
Image
The cancelations continue ahead of the holiday weekend.

Amazon has axed a trio of scripted series from its Prime Video service: The Horror of Dolores Roach, Harlan Coben’s Shelter, and With Love are all ending.

The Horror of Dolores Roach and Harlan Coben’s Shelter ran for one season, while With Love is ending after two seasons.

They are the latest cancelations at the streamer over the last few months following shows such as The Peripheral and A League of Their Own, which had both been renewed before those decisions were reversed.

Related: ‘The Peripheral’ Canceled; Prime Video Not Proceeding With Season 2 Amid Lengthy Strikes

While it’s clear that broadcasters and streamers are canceling a slew of shows coming out of the writers and actors strikes, a drastic reduction of original scripted series has been on the cards for some time as Hollywood continues to cut costs.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for The Horror of Dolores Roach finale.

The Horror of Dolores Roach is a TV adaptation of the popular podcast, following the story of an ex-convict who becomes involved in a series of gruesome murders and cannibalism. The Horror of Dolores Roach season 1 dropped Friday, July 7 on Prime Video, telling the story of a masseuse who kills her clients and disposes of the bodies by selling them as empanadas. Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for The Horror of Dolores Roach finale. Now available to stream on Prime Video, The Horror of Dolores Roach tells the tale of a woman who is forced to go to extreme lengths to survive. Dolores' relatability causes viewers to root for her throughout the show's eight episodes and even manages to make her killing spree feel like a mishap rather than an intentionally malicious act. With all bridges burned, and no place left to call home, Dolores flees Washington Heights in the finale's final moments, putting an end to the tale that she's been narrating since the pilot. However, the episode only concludes once Dolores seemingly finds Dominic and enacts her revenge.

The Horror of Dolores Roach is based on the hit Spotify fiction podcast of the same name, created and written by Aaron Mark. The first season focuses on Dolores, a woman who effectively starts her life over after having just been released from a 16-year prison sentence.

‘The Horror of Dolores Roach’ Is a Rotten ‘Sweeney Todd’ Riff
Image
“The Horror of Dolores Roach” is the kind of show that tries to do everything at once instead of doing one thing well. Is it a horror show? Is it a comedy? Is it a riff on “Sweeney Todd”? Is it a character study? Is it camp? Is it commentary? Yes, it’s all these things, and yes, other series have lumped many-a-genre and multiple goals into successful ongoing stories, but that first requires identifying what elements work well together.

Good horror isn’t just gore. Good comedy is, well, pretty subjective. But “Sweeney Todd” isn’t just about cannibalism, camp is earned, and commentary takes prolonged focus. The Amazon Prime Video series, adapted by creator, writer, and executive producer Aaron Mark from his one-woman play (“Empanada Loca”) and subsequent podcast (“The Horror of Dolores Roach”), never cooks any one ingredient long enough for its flavor to stand out in an overstuffed stew.

The Horror of Dolores Roach Review
Image
It's reductive to say that Prime Video's The Horror of Dolores Roach, starring Justina Machado, is a modern update of Sweeney Todd. Dolores Roach is that, sure, but it's much more, interpolating sharp commentary on gentrification, incarceration, and the sense that home is a fleeting thing subject to the whims of moneyed individuals who don't give a damn about anything other than the bottom line. Oh, and there's plenty of murder and cannibalism thrown in for good measure.

Outside of the Britannia Theatre, the marquee lights are dancing, and the dress-attired attendees are queued, waiting to see Dolores Roach, the hot new play starring Floria Frías (Jessica Pimentel), based on the true-crime podcast by Caleb Sweetzer (Jeffrey Self). On stage as Dolores, Floria is covered in blood in front of a massage table. Severed limbs are strewn about the stage as she delivers a monologue about an insatiable bloodlust: "I can't stop.

‘The Horror of Dolores Roach’ Star Justina Machado Relishes the Series’ ‘Sick’ Romance: ‘They Need Each Other’ (Video)
Justina Machado
Justina Machado may have sank her teeth into playing the murderous title character in “The Horror of Dolores Roach” — but she didn’t do it alone.

The new Prime Video series, premiering Friday, stars the “One Day at a Time” actress as a homicidal ex-con alongside Alejandro Hernandez’s Luis, a conspiring chef who disposes of her bodies by turning them into must-have Muy Loco empanadas.

“They’re toxic together,” she told TheWrap of the unlikely dynamic. “His crazy is crazier than her crazy, yet they need each other right now. They depend on each other. She even says it, like, no one’s ever done what he’s done for her. It’s sick. It’s twisted. But no one has ever done that… So she feels a sense of loyalty towards him.

The series is based on characters created by Aaron Mark, who turned his “Sweeney Todd”-inspired...

‘The Horror of Dolores Roach’ Review: Justina Machado in Prime Video’s Tasty Cannibalism Dramedy
Image
“I’m not the monster you’re making me out to be, seriously,” Dolores (Justina Machado) insists early in Prime Video’s The Horror of Dolores Roach. “I’m just like you, if everything went wrong.” Frankly, it’s a difficult assertion to swallow. By this point, we’re already aware she’s been involved in a scheme to turn humans into pastry filling, Sweeney Todd-style. Even the most broad-minded viewer is unlikely to find much relatable about that.

But the promise of The Horror of Dolores Roach is that it’s going to try enthusiastically to mount the case anyway — and the fun of it comes from realizing it succeeds more than not. No, you won’t necessarily walk away thinking you, too, might embrace cannibalism under the right circumstances. (That particular argument is better waged in Showtime’s Yellowjackets.) But in between the sick twists, dark laughs and lively lead performances,...

Cyndi Lauper on Finding Ruthie's Rhythm in The Horror of Dolores Roach
Image
The Horror of Dolores Roach is a new Prime Video series created by Aaron Mark, based on his own off-Broadway play, Empanada Loca, and its subsequent podcast adaptation. The 8-episode season is, loosely, a modern update of the tale of Sweeney Todd, a penny dreadful barber whose proclivity for murder provides the crucial ingredient for Mrs. Lovett's meat pies. Here, Todd's stand-in, Dolores Roach, is played by Justina Machado, whose boyfriend has let her take the fall for a sizable weed stash. After a 16-year sentence, Dolores returns to her old neighborhood of Washington Heights to find that gentrification has rendered the world she previously knew unrecognizable.

Among the show's many virtues is an outstanding ensemble cast, including Alejandro Hernandez, who plays the owner of an empanada shop that's the one place that hasn't changed in the neighborhood. Kita Updike, K. Todd Freeman, Judy Reyes, Jean Yoon, and many more offer great,...

Kita Updike and K. Todd Freeman Talk The Horror of Dolores Roach
Image
Prime Video serves up something wickedly original this summer with its darkly irreverent cannibalism comedy The Horror of Dolores Roach. Based on the hit Spotify podcast series of the same name, think of it as a modern-day tale of love, mood swings, betrayal, weed, survival, and, well yes, cannibalism.

Starring Justina Machado, Alejandro Hernandez (New Amsterdam), model Kita Updike, and K. Todd Freeman (A Series of Unfortunate Events), the eight-episode horror comedy series hails from Aaron Mark, who took the premise of his one-woman play Empanada Loca and expanded it into an online sensation. In this streaming version, the creator gives audiences a memorable protagonist in Dolores, who’s becoming a serial killer, but not a sociopath.

Here’s the lowdown: After being released from a 16-year prison sentence, Dolores (Justina Machado) returns to her suddenly gentrified Washington Heights neighborhood and reconnects with old stoner pal, Luis (Alejandro Hernandez). Feeling...

The Horror of Dolores Roach TV Review
Image
Plot: Dolores Roach is released after an unjust 16-year prison sentence, and she returns to a now-gentrified Washington Heights neighborhood. She reunites with an old stoner friend, Luis, who lets her live and work as a masseuse in the basement under his empanada shop. When the promise of her newfound stability is threatened, she must go to extremes to survive.

Review: It is tough to say whether the golden age of television is thriving or ending. With the streaming wars imploding, the depth and breadth of content on the small screen has never been bigger. But, with dozens upon dozens of series, many’s quality seems questionable. The latest series to debut is The Horror of Dolores Roach. A co-production between Amazon Studios and Blumhouse, The Horror of Dolores Roach is an adaptation of the hit podcast of the same name, which, in turn, was an adaptation of a stage play.

'The Horror of Dolores Roach' Cast and Character Guide

Over the past few years, no other form of media has had as meteoric a rise as podcasts. It seems as if in 2023, podcasts have become a crucial part of our everyday lives, whether in the form of news updates, celebrity interviews, or audio fiction. For many with busy lives, it can be hard to find the time to sit and binge the latest Netflix series or travel to the theater to indulge in the newest blockbuster, leaving podcasts the most efficient way of consuming some of the most celebrated stories being told today. One such podcast series that has captured the attention of an enormous amount of fans is The Horror of Dolores Roach. Written by Aaron Mark and debuting in 2016, the series took the burgeoning podcast-fiction genre by storm and has become one of its most widely-appreciated offerings to date. The Horror of Dolores Roach Review: Savor This Deliciously Dark Cannibal Comedy
Image
Forget superheroes. Hollywood has expanded its creative palate with stories about cannibalism, and viewers are tuning in. The subject matter may be an acquired taste for audiences, but between Dahmer—Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story on Netflix, Yellowjackets on Showtime, and the Timothy Chalamet-led romantic horror film Bones and All, nobody seems to mind.

Enter The Horror of Dolores Roach, the new Prime Video series that offers a wicked spin on the legend of Sweeney Todd, which became a highlight of 19th-century melodrama in London and spawned the popular Sweeney Todd musical. In this inspired outing, the beleaguered protagonist is the delightful titular Dolores Roach (Justina Machado of One Day at a Time and Jane The Virgin).

Dolores haphazardly falls down an emotional rabbit hole only to be propped up by her befuddled but lovable old pal Luis (Alejandro Hernandez of New Amsterdam), who runs a flailing empanada joint in Washington Heights.

“The Horror of Dolores Roach” Review – Sweeney Todd-Like Cannibal Comedy Series Spins its Wheels
Image
Amazon Original series “The Horror of Dolores Roach,” based on the hit Gimlet podcast, isn’t shy about its influences. Giving a contemporary, gentrification spin on the Victorian cannibalism tale of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the new series from creator Aaron Mark injects winking nods at every turn and then some, including a reference to William Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus. As tongue-in-cheek as these knowing references can be, it also underscores how familiar Dolores Roach’s predicament can be, though it’s offset by Justina Machado’s relatable and empathetic performance.

Much like Sweeney Todd, we meet Machado’s Dolores Roach at the far end of a lengthy prison sentence she didn’t quite earn. Dolores took the fall for her drug dealer boyfriend Dominic and spent sixteen years in jail, and her release leaves her with very little to her name in a now-gentrified Washington Heights.

Exclusive: Justina Machado and Alejandro Hernandez on The Horror of Dolores Roach
Image
Justina Machado holds nothing back when asked about her twisted new horror comedy The Horror of Dolores Roach. “I really wanted to be a part of it," beamed the Jane the Virgin and One Day at a Time star. In fact, she had listened to creator Aaron Mark’s hit podcast of the same name about an ex-con turned massage therapist whose “magic hands” suddenly become a lethal weapon.

The Sweeney Todd Influences Behind The Horror of Dolores Roach
Image
It’s a classic story. A man sets himself up as a barber, starts killing his customers, robs them of their riches, then disposes of the bodies by chopping them up into bits and selling them out of the pie shop next door. The story first appeared in the penny dreadful serial, The String of Pearls in 1845, and has gone on to be retold in plays, movies, and most famously, a musical.

“I’m partial to the first surviving film version of Sweeney Todd – the black and white film starring Tod Slaughter,...

Bww Review: Alison Fraser Has A Bloody Tale To Tell in Aaron Mark's Squeamish
Playwrightdirector Aaron Mark has a habit of leaving audiences in the dark. Not that his plays are especially hard to grasp, but the author who specializes sending chills up and down spines with his solo theatrical thrillers seems to enjoy having audience members sitting in pitch blackness for at least a part of every production. It works wonders for the creepiness factors.
