Broadcast networks again broke into regular programming with images of smoke rising in the skies over Tel Aviv, after Iran launched retaliatory attacks on Israel for its strikes on nuclear facilities and top military leaders.
ABC News broke into regular programming, with Diane Macedo anchoring, and CBS News provided a special report with John Dickerson anchoring. Cable news networks and broadcast streaming channels quickly focused their coverage on the attacks.
Israel defense forces said that “all of Israel is under fire as Iran fires projectiles,” and later reported a second round featuring dozens of additional missiles.
The Idf said in an announcement, “Every civilian must be aware of the most protected space in their area. When an alert is received, you must enter the protected space and remain there until further notice.”
Previously: Donald Trump once again chatted by phone with news anchors, this time to express support for Israel’s military strikes on Iran.

Networks focused coverage throughout the afternoon today on the latest school shooting, this time in Winder, Ga, where a 14-year-old is in custody. Officials said that two students and two teachers were killed, and nine are in local hospitals.
Colt Gray, a student at the school, Apalachee High School, will be charged with murder and tried as an adult, Chris Hosey of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation told reporters.
Authorities received a call at about 10:20 a.m. Et about reports of an active shooter and law enforcement was on the scene within minutes, Hosey said. Two school resource officers encountered the shooter soon after the report went out, he said, and once officers encountered Gray, he immediately surrendered.
“The priority right now for us within this investigation is to gather all the facts, and make sure we’re accurate with it, because this is a murder investigation,” he said.

Kim Godwin, the ABC News president who was the first Black woman to run a broadcast network news operation, is leaving the Disney unit amid increasing concern about the way she was managing the home of shows like “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight.”
Godwin told staffers in a memo Sunday that she planned to “retire from broadcast journalism.” Her command had come under increasing scrutiny since a restructuring of ABC News and Disney’s ABC stations had her reporting directly to Debra OConnell, a Disney business veteran who is seen as a valued operator at the company. OConnell will lead ABC News for the foreseeable future, she told employees Sunday evening.
A Disney spokesperson declined to make executives available for additional comment or to respond to a query about what changes Godwin’s exit might mean for the executive’s immediate direct reports or the management of individual ABC News programs.

TV news is latching on to an old standby to help it gain attention in a new — and often less flashy — news cycle.
Coverage of the court trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged with causing the death of George Floyd, will surface Monday across many mainstream TV outlets. Some of it will be gavel-to-gavel, the sort of thing that echoes the news media’s fascination with the O.J. Simpson murder trial of 1995.
Many TV-news outlets have seen key ratings tumble as the nation emerges from the coronavirus pandemic and in the wake of the end of President Donald Trump’s term in office. The looming trial could serve as new means of winning audiences. “There’s always pressure in television news to find stories that bring in ratings, but especially now because viewer numbers have dropped so much without Trump in the White House,” says Mark Feldstein,...
