‘The Hunting Wives’ Creator Explains Why She Upped the Politics for TV, Changed the Killer: ‘I Went a Little Bonkers’
Image
The following story contains for “The Hunting Wives” Season 1.

“The Hunting Wives” has captivated Netflix audiences with its salacious Texas women and twisty, addictive murder mystery plot, boosting the series to the No. 1 spot on the platform’s viewership charts. But believe it or not, creator Rebecca Cutter told TheWrap that the road to the show’s success was not so clear cut.

Based on the novel of the same name, “The Hunting Wives” follows fish-out-of-water East Coaster Sophie O’Neill (Brittany Snow) as she attempts to find her footing when her husband moves her family to East Texas. Cutter made several changes from the book – one being upping the political undertones within the Texas town of Maple Brook.

The outspoken “Hunting Wives” are pro-gun and anti-abortion. They attend the local mega church on Sundays, but they are not inclusive of the church women from the other side of town. Cutter...

The Hunting Wives: A suspenseful and sultry series based on May Cobb’s novel lands at Starz
Image
Steel yourselves for something saucy because a series adaptation of the May Cobb novel, The Hunting Wives, is coming to Starz. The network gave the project an eight-episode order, with Hightown creator Rebecca Cutter writing, executive producing, and showrunning the adaptation with 3 Arts Entertainment’s Erwin Stoff. The Hunting Wives is the first new series coming to Starz since the end of the WGA strike last week. The network recently canceled shows, including Heels, Run the World, and Blindspotting, much to the dismay of fans.

Here’s the synopsis for Cobb’s novel via Amazon:

Sophie O’Neill left behind an envy-inspiring career and the stressful, competitive life of big-city Chicago to settle down with her husband and young son in a small Texas town. It seems like the perfect life with a beautiful home in an idyllic rural community. But Sophie soon realizes that life is now too quiet,...

Zac Posen on ‘The Outfit’ and His Desire to Do More Costume Design Work: ‘Maybe Using More of My Fantasy Sensibility’
Image
Director Graham Moore was adamant about wanting to nail down the authenticity of what a tailoring shop looked like and what a cutter does in the process of making clothes for his new film “The Outfit.” He recruited fashion designer Zac Posen to take audiences inside the world of tailoring. Says Posen, “He was interested in close-ups of the texture of clothing material, the dust when you cut, or how threads rapidly fly up.”

Mark Rylance stars as Leonard, a master ex-Savile Row tailor, who winds up in post-ww II Chicago where he stitches together suits, while the local mob uses his store as a front.

To build Leonard’s costumes, the filmmakers found the perfect collaborator in Savile Row tailor Huntsman & Son who custom-made the shirts and suits in the film.

During that process, the pandemic threw a wrench in the works leaving Posen to hire a co-costume designer.

‘The Outfit’ Is the Impeccable Gangster-Movie Couture Porn You’ve Been Looking For
Image
On the south side of Chicago, there’s a small shop at the end of a quiet, snowy street. Its proprietor, a man named Leonard Burling (Mark Rylance), makes suits. Please don’t refer to this courtly English gentleman as a tailor, however — he spent many years apprenticing on Savile Row as a “cutter,” which is a very different skill set, indeed. When Burling eventually left his native country, he set up shop in the Windy City and made a name for himself as a provider of beautiful suits for a discerning clientele.

‘The Outfit’ Review: Mark Rylance Makes Clothes for Killers in Smart but Subdued Mobster Drama
Image
It’s hard to imagine anyone better suited to the lead role of Graham Moore’s “The Outfit” than Mark Rylance — the story of a Savile Row tailor who works more or less exclusively for an Irish mobster in 1956 Chicago. Rylance’s character, Leonard Burling, knows the rules: You keep your head down and your mouth shut, and in return, you’re treated almost like family by the Boyle clan. And if you don’t, well, we’ve all seen enough gangster pictures to know the consequences.

Leonard hardly ever leaves his workshop, and neither do we, in “The Outfit,” a contained, almost play-like film noir the likes of which John Huston and Nicholas Ray were making in the early ’50s.

Today, of course, this is yet another example of the Covid-era trend of drawing a handful of characters into a single location where some kind of crime takes place.

‘The Outfit’ Film Review: Gangster Drama About Mob Tailor Loses the Thread
Mark Rylance
Oscar-winning actor Mark Rylance’s special gift is an appearance of unspoiled authenticity, as if someone from real life had wandered into the frame, or — considering his extensive, legend-status background — onto the stage, his very presence ready either to blend in, or to shake things up.

It’s a talent that puts him in good stead to rivet our attention in establishing his role as a dedicated tailor facing dire circumstances in Graham Moore’s “The Outfit.” But it’s not enough to offset what’s questionably designed and ill-fitting about this claustrophobic, one-night-in-one-location thriller.

Moore, who wrote the film adaptation of the Alan Turing biopic “The Imitation Game,” directs for the first time from an original screenplay (co-written with Johnathan McClain). He was inspired by the alluring family detail that a beloved doctor grandfather of Moore’s had regularly treated a New Jersey mobster. In this case, the unassuming...
