The Vampire Diaries is one of the few shows that thrived with a huge ensemble cast, as every figure was so unique and individually important to the overarching story of the fantasy drama. Damon, Elena, and Stefan were obviously incredibly important, but the supporting cast also managed to enthrall fans with their own character arcs that were as interesting as the three protagonists. However, some of these beloved characters didn't last as long as the show did.

Some of them, like Jenna and Liz, met untimely deaths that left viewers completely heartbroken, while others exited the show to explore other endeavors. The Vampire Diaries handled some of these character departures very well, but others, like Meredith Fell, were never explained until episodes later and in passing. These fan favorites would have enhanced the show if they had stuck around, without a doubt, but they were sadly phased out of the show a little too soon.

While the vampires were the main focus of The Vampire Diaries, plenty of other supernatural creatures also added to the fantasy drama. Werewolves, in particular, were the next most fascinating supernatural beings on the show, and Tyler Lockwood became one of the most loved characters because of it. Werewolves appeared in Tvd Season 2, but Tyler's transformation was the most important one.

Becoming a werewolf actually turned Tyler into a better person, as he struggled with anger issues before it. He became a good friend and lover to many characters, which was why his untimely death in the final season came as a blow to fans. The entire fandom would have liked Tyler to make it to the end and even have his happy ending romantically. There were several characters he could have had his endgame with.

For eight seasons, The Vampire Diaries told a love story that consumed its characters. Recuperating from the deaths of her parents, Elena Gilbert finds love with the vampire Stefan, only to be pulled in the direction of his dark older brother, Damon. Surrounding the iconic trio was a large ensemble cast who had romantic trials of their own. But not every character was created equal.

For every Caroline, Bonnie, or Klaus, there were many characters that never reached their full potential. Even some of the main cast were passed over for the love triangle at the center of the series, only to be phased out completely. The Vampire Diaries has many virtues, but it is tragic to see so many characters with bright futures fall by the wayside.

Often, these characters would overlap from one series to the other, adding to their appeal.

The introduction of the Original vampires took it to the next level, and then they had their own New Orleans-based spinoff. Legacies had some of the younger characters growing up and taking center stage, which allowed fans to get a deeper look into their personalities. Romance and fantasy were the cornerstones of The Vampire Diaries, and Damon, Stefan and Elena were the main love triangle that was adored by all. However, the show was full of other relationships as well that were just as exciting and steamy, if not more than the main triangle. In fact, when Damon and Elena chose each other, Caroline emerged as a love interest for Stefan.

She and Stefan had been best friends for years, but she had initially shown romantic interest in him. The writers of The Vampire Diaries chose to rekindle this weak spark and make Stefan and Caroline an endgame couple, but most fans disagreed. Caroline had plenty of chemistry with several other characters, and she would have been better suited to them than Stefan.

She was the perfect mix of villainous and sympathetic, as she did not hesitate to do what she needed to for her survival. Her tragic past with Klaus, where she was left fighting for her life and fleeing him as he chased her down all over the world, made viewers feel for her, as she was just a woman alone trying to live while being hunted down. However, Katherine was quite an old vampire, and she had a considerable amount of power that made her a force to be reckoned with.

Over eight seasons of The Vampire Diaries, Damon Salvatore (played by Ian Somerhalder) has done horrible things. His kill count is at the top of the list, and what's worse is he doesn't seem to be bothered by most of these deaths. Deciding not to torture himself by having a conscience, the evil Salvatore brother indulges in bad behavior just because he likes it. Not only has Damon unleashed his rage on generations of Whitemores, but he also murdered his brother's best friend, Lexi.

Let's not forget the time when he feeds people to Sybil or the time he rips out of the hybrids' hearts. He's also responsible for Tyler Lockwood's death and manipulating Caroline to be his blood bank and helper. He turns Vicki into a vampire, and eventually leads to her demise. Damon has well established himself as a lost cause, which is why no one bothers to reason with him.

In its eight seasons, The Vampire Diaries managed to make audiences feel butterflies, grief, pain, joy, and even fear. Damon, Stefan, Elena, Bonnie, Caroline, and Matt were compelling characters who kept fans hooked with their personalities, and they had intriguing adventures with the best and worst of the supernatural in Mystic Falls. However, they also exhibited unintentional hilarity sometimes, which kept the show fresh.

These moments were not meant to be funny most times, but the way the actors delivered them happened to tickle people's funny bones. Otherwise, the writing of a particular scene was so odd and out of character that fans were reduced to tears of laughter. Most times, these unintentionally amusing moments in Tvd endeared the audience to the characters and created memorable occasions.

The CW's The Vampire Diaries is undoubtedly one of the best fantasy shows ever created, but few fans know that it was actually based on a series of novels written by L.J. Smith. The Vampire Diaries mainly followed 17-year-old Elena Gilbert and her friends as they discover their hometown, Mystic Falls, is full of supernatural entities. However, the series also saw them involved in a battle between good and evil unfold as they tried to protect their home from being destroyed by several evil villains. While most of the main characters ended up acquiring supernatural abilities of their own, they did also have to rely on several mythical objects to protect many of their loved ones since a few characters didn't have any abilities at all.

Over the 8 seasons, The Vampire Diaries writers did add many interesting inventions and artifacts to the show, such as the Phoenix stone, Daylight amulets, and the Cure. However, one that became a core part of the series was the Gilbert ring.

The Vampire Diaries may be most famous for its angst-ridden love triangle of Elena Gilbert and the Salvatore brothers, but the show had many other memorable characters and some of The CW's most notable villains. One of the best was Katherine Pierce, who may have looked like Elena, but they couldn't be any more different from each other. While other vampires were loud and flamboyant in their actions, Katherine was quick, efficient, and merciless, siring several vampires during the course of her eternal life.

Katerina was over 500 years old, and she spent much of that time escaping Klaus and other enemies. She seldom had companions, but when she took a liking to someone, she tended to turn them into vampires for her convenience. Elena might not have had a lot of friends on the show, but the ones she had loved her hard. As a friend, she was protective and loyal, and would have done anything to save the people she loved, and she often reaped what she sowed.

Another much-missed Mikaelson is returning to the fold. Claire Holt, who played Rebekah on both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, will reprise her role in the Nov. 11 episode of Legacies (The CW, 9/8c).

One of The CW’s greatest love stories is being retold in song. The Feb. 4 episode of Legacies (9/8c) stages the long-awaited production of Salvatore: The Musical, with current students embodying Vampire Diaries favorites like Damon, Stefan, Elena and Caroline.

A new batch of photos finds Josie donning Elena’s signature black hair, leather jacket and Converse sneakers as she recreates the doppelganger’s first meeting with Stefan (played here by Jed) in the cemetery. Damon, meanwhile, will be played by Kaleb, while Lizzie appears to be portraying none other than Caroline Forbes.

Ian Somerhalder is set to star on Netflix's upcoming vampire drama, V Wars, but he's not entirely against returning to his Vampire Diaries roots. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the 40-year-old actor toyed with the idea of appearing on Tvd spinoff, Legacies.

While he wouldn't want to reprise his role as vampire-turned-human, Damon Salvatore, he would definitely love to direct an episode. "I actually would love to talk to Jules [The Vampire Diaries creator Julie Plec]. I would love to go and direct one of [the Legacies episodes]," Somerhalder said. "Because I know Paul [Wesley] went to do it, and he called me, and he's like, 'Bro, this is f*cking crazy.' Because it's all of our old sets, which is a time warp, 10 years ago. Between The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, Julie Plec has introduced many characters into the universe that could make an appearance at the Salvatore Boarding School. Matt Donovan, Jeremy Gilbert, Josette, and Roman have already made appearances on Legacies. As often seen in its two previous shows, characters don't stay dead for long in Mystic Falls or New Orleans, and Legacies could be the next show to bring a beloved character back from the dead... or bring in any living one.

It has been confirmed that Legacies will bring back Freya Mikaelson and Kai Parker in the second season. With so many characters and a known open-door policy, anyone could make an appearance. However, that doesn't mean that every character should be seen again. Here are five characters that shouldn't return, along with five that should.

Chris Wood is finally making his long-awaited return to Mystic Falls. The actor, who played fan-favorite baddie Kai Parker in several seasons of The Vampire Diaries, will guest-star in Episode 12 of Legacies‘ second season, EW reports.

TVLine spoke with series creator Julie Plec earlier this season, following a brief mention of Kai on the show, about the possibility of Wood showing his face on Legacies.

Here’s a sight for sore eyes: Riley Voelkel (aka Hope’s Aunt Freya) is making her debut on Legacies this month, and TVLine has an exclusive first look at her grand arrival.

So, what brings Freya into the fold? The specifics remain a mystery, but according to the official synopsis for the Nov. 21 episode (The CW, 9/8c), she “receives an unexpected visit from one of the Salvatore Students.” So even though it may look like she’s standing solo in Rousseau’s, she’s actually chatting with… someone.

Hope Mikaelson is getting a visit from her Aunt Freya!

According to TV Guide, Riley Voelkel will reprise her The Originals role during an episode of Legacies Season 2. 

No furher details have been revealed, but this is excellent news for fans of the show that came before Legacies. 

It's hard to believe we went an entire season without Hope reuniting with any of her family members. 

Her mother and father may be dead, but there are other members of her family out there.

This appearance from Voelkel is billed as a guest stint, likely because the actress also appears on fellow CW drama, Roswell, New Mexico.

Hope Mikaelson is receiving a visit from her favorite aunt. (Don’t tell Rebekah we said that!) Riley Voelkel, who played Freya on The Originals, will guest-star in Episode 6 of Legacies‘ upcoming second season, TV Guide reports.

No additional details are available about Freya’s visit, but considering everything that’s going down at the Salvatore School — from Hope battling her way out of Malivore to the Saltzman twins bracing for their impending merge — we’re sure she’ll find something to do.

It's hard to believe it, but there's a third entry into The Vampire Diaries universe. 

Legacies Season 1 was a surprising series. It gave the franchise a new lick of paint and breathed new life into one that many thought would die with the conclusion of The Originals.

Celester: Ugh, it won't stop the problems at school. It's very obvious that it was Alaric's purpose to that. Nevertheless, the knife is just the tip of the iceberg to what these people have to face.

With a thematic monster of the week, the show is kinda keeping us on our toes. Which is good. Will it be good for Dorian, no one's sure yet.

Justin: I agree with Celester, the knife is only just the beginning of the problems. Regardless of them hiding it and sending it away, the trouble is still going to make its way to the school and the characters.

Did Jeremy Gilbert manage to save Landon and Rafael?

That was revealed on Legacies Season 1 Episode 3 when the two teenagers continued their life on the road, but found themselves in danger after a big mistake.

Meanwhile, Hope and Josie started to bond, but a life or death situation put the two girls at odds once again.

Just when you thought Riverdale had cornered market on gargoyles, along came Thursday’s Legacies to remind Archie & Co. what a real monster looks like.

After waking from a who-knows-how-long slumber in the final moments of last week’s episode, the Salvatore Boarding School’s resident gargoyle wasted no time terrorizing the student body — specifically Lizzie’s body, which began turning to stone after she was attacked by the walking lawn ornament. (Maybe that will teach her to listen to Pedro!) After surviving an encounter of his own, Alaric discovered that the gargoyle was only attacking other supernatural creatures, those it perceived as threats.

If you're enrolled at the Salvatore School, you're probably safer traveling across the Atlantic Ocean and heading to Hogwarts. 

Legacies Season 1 Episode 3 was another standout hour of this new CW drama series, which has successfully managed to bring the best components of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals to craft a rock-solid series. 

After the fire-breathing witch turned into a fire-breathing dragon on Legacies Season 1 Episode 2, the villain of the week on "We're Being Punked, Pedro" was much tamer. 

That's thanks in part to Lizzie doing the spell to keep it inside the walls of the school. Could you imagine the destruction it would have caused it made its way to the town square?

Just when it seemed like Mystic Falls was done with the weird creatures, another one shows up!

On Legacies Season 1 Episode 3, the Salvatore School is rocked by a mysterious Gargoyle who has come to life and is intent on causing death and destruction across campus. 

In a sneak peek released by The CW, Lizzie is sulking about Alaric's continued interest in Hope, and how her life has been turned upside down by it. 

That's when a youngster named Pedro gets the fright of his life.

"That statue just moved," he says to Lizzie, but she thinks he's messing with her. 

"Good one. I mean, I deserve what's happening just as much as Hope. I'm his freaking daughter," Lizzie continues of her daddy issues. 

"It's doing it again," says the alarmed child. 

This time, however, Lizzie notices the statue has definitely moved, and she has a rational explanation for it.

There's a dragon in Mystic Falls?

That's the question we can't stop repeating after Legacies Season 1 Episode 2 pulled the ultimate switcheroo on us.

Celester: Honestly, that was a great surprise! Not once did I imagine a dragon being a part of the Tvd/To Universe. That said, there had to be someone who saw the dragon when it flew up in the skies. There had to be one!

Justin: Loved it! The dragon was something new that we hadn't seen before, and it really challenged the main characters fighting it. A witch would've been too much of the same-old-same-old.

Paul: I was surprised, but it was a fantastic twist. I agree that I never imagined a dragon appearing...

Well, that was an eventful hour!

Titans Season 1 Episode 4 finally gave us the much-needed insight into the character of Gar we've been waiting for, while simultaneously setting up Doom Patrol, the spinoff of Titans. 

There was an instant connection between Rachel and Gar on Titans Season 1 Episode 3, and with Rachel in a tight spot after her ordeal at St. Paul's, it all seemed a little too easy to have them meet in the woods. 

I'm willing to let that slide because it helped the two characters cross paths and expand on the mythology we've been given mere tidbits of information about thus far.

Gar's living situation was fascinating. He was saved by Niles from certain doom and gifted with a room in a lavish mansion that towers above the size of a one-bed apartment, all the latest tech, and even his own dysfunctional family.

The CW's Legacies might have had a soft launch last Thursday, but the spinoff of both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals bucked the trend in week two. 

Legacies Season 1 Episode 2 inched up a tenth to a 0.4 rating (1.2 million total viewers). It looks like the good word of mouth for Legacies Season 1 Episode 1 paid off. 

In the demo, the new series held 100 percent of its Supernatural lead-in. 

Supernatural itself ticked up a tenth from last week's fast affiliate rating to a 0.4 (1.5 million total viewers). 

Over on ABC, Grey's Anatomy (6.6 million/1.5 rating) and Station 19 (5 million/0.9 rating) were both steady, while How to Get Away with Murder (2.9 million/0.8 rating) gained a tenth. 

There was nothing unusual to report for The Big Bang Theory (12.4 million/2.1 rating), Young Sheldon (10.9 million/1.7 rating) and S.W.A.T. (5.2 million/0.7 rating) which were all on par with their season averages. 

However, Mom (8 million/1.1 rating) slipped for the third week in a row,...

We're just two episodes into The Vampire Diaries, and The Originals spinoff and the easter eggs are beginning to stack up. 

On Legacies Season 1 Episode 3, titled "We're Being Punked, Pedro," Stephen R. McQueen will stop by to reprise the role of Jeremy Gilbert which he played on the first series in the franchise. 

McQueen departed The Vampire Diaries during its sixth season, yet popped up at the school on The Vampire Diaries Season 8 Episode 16 in a blink and you'll miss it moment.

There's no telling what brings him back into the fold, but we have the first pictures of the episode which finds the Salvatore school struggling with a problem of Gargoyle proportions.

In these troubled times, it’s comforting to know that there are still things you can always count on — like über human Matt Donovan defending the people of Mystic Falls against… literally anything. Karen David is headed to Mystic Falls. 

Per Deadline, the former Galavant actress has joined Legacies, the spinoff of The Originals and The Vampire Diaries as a witch.

David will take on the role of Emma Tig, a "beautiful witch-turned-guidance counselor" at the Salvatore School for the Young & Gifted. 

The report also states that the "person who needs her therapy the most (the headmaster) remains an elusive patient."

The headmaster of the school is none other than Alaric Saltzman (Matt Davis), who has not had the best time of it ever since we first laid eyes on him back on The Vampire Diaries Season 1.

We already know that the new CW show, Legacies, is a continuation of the stories told in The Vampire Diaries and its first spinoff, The Originals. But how close to home do we get for this new series, which premieres on Oct. 25? According to creator Julie Plec, the answer is very. On Monday, she told journalists at the Television Critics Association's Summer press tour that the new show's prime setting is at a school that's "off old Miller Road, on the edge of Mystic Falls, where the locals think it's a troubled school for rich kids. But inside are a wonderful cast of characters of young supernatural beings."

For those well-initiated with our favorite fictitious Virginia small town, note that there will still be a Miss Mystic Falls pageant and a Founder's Day celebration. Steven R. McQueen will return as Jeremy Gilbert for one episode and Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig) is still the town sheriff.
