Malcolm Turnbull

Trivia

Malcolm Turnbull

Edit
  • Parliamentary leader of the Liberal Party of Australia from 16 September 2008 to 1 December 2009. 14 September 2015 to 24 August 2018.
  • Turnbull represented the Division of Wentworth in Sydney's eastern suburbs from October 2004 to September 2018.
  • He served as the federal Minister for Environment and Water Resources from 23 January 2007 to 3 December 2007.
  • Prime Minister of Australia (14 September 2015 - 24 August 2018).
  • With a net-worth of $186 million, Turnbull was the wealthiest Prime Minister in Australian history.
  • The use of Bligh as a male middle name is a tradition in the Turnbull family. It is Turnbull's middle name as well as that of his son. One of Turnbull's ancestors was colonist John Turnbull, who named his youngest son William Bligh Turnbull in honour of deposed Governor William Bligh at the time of the Rum Rebellion. Bligh had been arrested after being found cowardly hiding under a servant's bed.
  • He was the very first Australian prime minister to be played on "Saturday Night Live" (1975)_ by Beck Bennett in 2017.
  • Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Joe Hockey, Australia's Ambassador to the United States, have both called for parliament to formally recognise the Armenian Genocide. More than 20 countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Brazil, Canda and Russia, and two Australian states - NSW and South Australia - recognise the mass murder of 1.5 million Christians, including Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians in the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1923 as genocide, but both major Australian political parties have so far stopped short of doing so at a federal level, most likely because of diplomatic pressure from Turkey [2017].
  • While as Prime Minister, lost a record 39 consecutive Newspolls.
  • Regarded as the least effective Liberal Prime Minister in Australian history, presiding over a divided cabinet, rising unemployment, inflation, and a debt blow-out.
  • Wrote a bizarre series of love letters to a cat named Nessie in a bid to win over her owner, in 1978. When the owner rejected Turnbull's advances, the cat was found strangled to death on her doorstep.
  • As Prime Minister of Australia, lost 14 House of Representative seats, 3 Senate seats, and 6 by-elections.
