As I watched the end credits of “Stolen” roll, I screamed internally, ‘This is one of the most important films made about the current state of our country in the last decade.’ This also shows that in the last decade, how sorry has been the state of Bollywood that you cannot recall any other Bollywood film that exposes the horrors of fake news apart from Sudhir Mishra’s “Afwaah” (2023). The other Bollywood movie that comes in close comparison to “Stolen” is “Nh-10” (2015); coincidentally, released exactly a decade ago.

But “Nh-10” or “Afwaah” were good films trying to fit into the Bollywood template. “Stolen” does not do that. Yet, while watching “Stolen,” I said to myself, This can’t happen. People are not so good.

There is not a lot that happens in Stolen, at least with respect to the number of events. But the impactful story, the possibility of something like that happening in real life, the harsh reality of the world, the desperation, the poverty, and the helplessness make Stolen a harrowing watch. The film reminded me of Navdeep Singh’s NH10, probably because of the kind of locations both the films were shot at, and also because of the character arcs of the protagonists, who, from feeling extremely petrified, reached a stage where they just became numb to everything. Stolen, through its crisp screenplay, is able to show you the real India. It addresses issues that are often part of our dinner table conversations, though there is a lack of empathy when the privileged class talks about it, because they don’t know what it feels like when you become a victim...

The film, which is produced by Gaurav Dhingra’s Jungle Book Studio (Toronto titles “Angry Indian Goddesses” and “Faith Connections”), is also a commentary on the alarming number of child abductions in India in recent years, and the explosion of often misguided vigilantism that accompanied the widespread adoption of instant messaging apps, particularly in rural areas.

The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, earned a special mention in the Feature Film Competition at the Zurich Film Festival this week, and heads next to the BFI London fest.

Sleeping on his mattress, Pallavi was laughing at Joginder, who claimed to have seen some disturbing paranormal activities in the night. Though he did not say what it was, during his night in the Gautam gang’s tent, others were telling ghost stories which did not go down well with Joginder.

All scared, he mysteriously vanished and was then seen in the Rhea gang half mumbling in his sleep telling Pallavi: “You guys keep talking about all these ghosts and everything. I didn’t like it so I came here.”
