Longlegs' Director Made an A24 Horror Masterpiece Nobody Saw
Image
Oz Perkins' underrated film, The Blackcoat's Daughter, intertwines the stories of three students at a Catholic boarding school, exploring themes of demonic possession and slow-burn horror. The film features a talented cast, including Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Boynton, and Emma Roberts. It marked Perkins' directorial debut, and his roots in the industry date back to his father, Anthony Perkins. The Blackcoat's Daughter is an overlooked A24 masterpiece and serves as a great introduction to Oz Perkins' work before Longlegs' release.

With hype building for the upcoming release of the Nicholas Cage-led Longlegs, with early screenings having critics abuzz, many will be discovering the work of writer/director Osgood Perkins (shortened to Oz Perkins) for the first time. However, Oz Perkins has slowly been building up a repertoire of unsettling horror cinema, with previous works like the Netflix original I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives in the House and 2020s Gretel & Hansel.

‘9 Bullets’ Review
Image
Stars: Lena Headey, Sam Worthington, Dean Scott Vazquez, Emma Holzer, Barbara Hershey, La La Anthony, Cam Gigandet | Written and Directed by Gigi Gaston

As I watched 9 Bullets the plot seemed overly familiar, it wasn’t billed as a remake of anything but it seemed very familiar. Then it hit me, Gloria, a film John Cassavetes made in 1980, and remade by Sidney Lumet in 1999. Both involve a tough woman who has to go on the run with a young boy wanted by the mobsters who killed his parents. In Gloria he has a book with incriminating information, in this film, it’s a laptop. In both films, the mob boss is her ex and as a name, Gypsy isn’t that far from Gloria either.

I wasn’t surprised to see that it was one of a slew of films writer/director Gigi Gaston cited as an influence on 9 Bullets.

(Pictured above: Gomez [scroll down for more on Gomez's box-office performance to date; pictured below: bad girls in bikinis in court.) One of the highest opening weekend per-theater averages ever Spring Breakers was down one spot on Box Office Mojo's post-1982 chart of opening-weekend per-theater averages. At #23, the movie is sandwiched between two Academy Award winners: Tom Hooper / Colin Firth's The King's Speech with $88,863 and Steven Spielberg / Daniel Day-Lewis' Lincoln with $85,846. Once inflation is factored in, Spring Breakers drops to the 52nd spot (down nine spots from yesterday's estimates), landing between Daniel Myrick...
