Alex Ross Perry is chasing “Pavements” — that is, the fictionalized version of the band that his very real faux music documentary is about.
The “Her Smell” director helms the movie within a movie about Pavement, the ’90s American alternative group. The official synopsis reads: “‘Pavements’ is a movie about Pavement the band — among other things. The latest film from acclaimed director Alex Ross Perry is a documentary that may or may not be entirely true, may or may not be totally sincere, and may or may not be more about the idea of the band — or any band — than a history of the short-lived, passionately loved, commercially marginal ’90s American alternative group Pavement. This unconventional film about a highly unconventional band incorporates a stage musical, rock biopic, gallery exhibition, archival footage, and contemporary observational footage to create a film as irreducible, uncharacterizable, and entertaining as the band and its music.

"We were big on MTV!" Utopia has revealed an official trailer for the film Pavements, the latest creation from NYC indie filmmaker Alex Ross Perry. This is sort of a documentary, or not, more of a mockumentary, but it's also kind of real, and kind of a fictional film. Does this band actually exist? Is this doc about their return or about them not being a real band? Who knows? Pavements is a doc film about the American indie band Pavement, which combines scripts with images of the band & a musical mise-en-scene composed of songs from their discography. It's a prismatic, narrative, scripted, musical, metatextual hybrid. Showing the band preparing for their sold-out 2022 reunion tour while tracking the preparations for a musical based on their songs, a museum about their history, and a big-budget Hollywood biopic. Anchored by Pavement's slacker-sage-sphinx, Stephen Malkmus, the film features actors Joe Keery, Jason Schwartzman,...

Six years since his last solo directing feature, Her Smell, Alex Ross Perry returned to the world of rock in a very different way with Pavements. A tribute to Stephen Malkmus’ group, the film jumps between band documentary, biopic (and the making of the biopic), Broadway-musical creation, museum exhibition, and more to try containing the genius of this influential group. After its fall festival premiere, Utopia will give it a release this year, beginning on May 2, and they’ve now released the first trailer after we got a fun teaser at the film within the film. Along with Pavement members, the film also features Joe Keery as frontman Stephen Malkmus, alongside Jason Schwartzman, Fred Hechinger, Tim Heidecker, Logan Miller, Griffin Newman, Nat Wolff, and more.

The jig might just be up for Penn Badgley’s Joe Goldberg in the upcoming fifth and final season of “You.”
In the trailer for the new season, Joe is back in New York City thanks to Kate (Charlotte Ritchie), who, since meeting him in London, has transformed Joe’s under the radar life as he steps out at the city’s most exclusive events.
“Fame definitely took a bit of getting used to, but to live happily ever after you had to bury your old self,” Joe said in the trailer.
All that is interrupted when Joe comes face-to-face with a fresh-faced woman named Bronte (Madeline Brewer), but Joe convinces himself, “you have a great life — it’s just not worth the risk.”

Anna Kendrick surprised us all this past month when her disturbing, gritty directing debut Woman of the Hour dropped on Netflix. The film tells the true story of serial killer Rodney Alcala and the women who crossed paths with him. Woman of the Hour is chock-full of impressive performances from Daniel Zovatto as Alcala, Tony Hale as The Dating Game show host Ed Burke, and breakout roles from Kathryn Gallagher and Autumn Best as Charlie and Amy, two victims of Alcala's crimes. For the film, Kendrick both acted in the lead role and directed, requiring wearing many hats, but that's not all that she did on set. Kendrick's background as a singer may have gone under the radar for this film, but ended up serving an important role in her vision for the film. Kendrick's innovative musical oversight of Woman of the Hour shows her dedication to every level of the movie,...

Anna Kendrick may have made her directorial debut with Woman of the Hour but she made no profit from it after deciding to donate all of her pay to Rainn (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) and the National Center for Victims of Violent Crime.
While appearing on the Crime Junkie Af podcast to chat about the Netflix film, Kendrick reflected on making the decision for her donation.
“This was never a money-making venture for me. All the resources went to actually just making the movie,” Kendrick told host Ashley Flowers.
She said that things took a turn ahead of taking the film to the Toronto International Film Festival where she realized money would become involved in conversations about the film: “I went from being like, ‘Let me know when the movie happens,’ to being like, ‘Oh god I am responsible for this,’ and then it was making the movie — we...

After premiering during the festival circuit over a year ago, Anna Kendrick's directorial debut has finally found its home on Netflix. The true crime drama centers around the real-life Dating Game killer, Rodney Alcala, played expertly by Daniel Zovatto. The Dating Game was a popular ABC reality show in the '70s that had a different woman contestant on each episode ask three anonymous bachelors a series of questions before picking a winner to go on a date with her.
Alcala infamously appeared on an episode of the show in 1978 during the midst of his brutal killing spree. Woman of the Hour tells this story in a non-linear fashion, including the years before and after his time as a contestant on the show,

Anna Kendrick's acclaimed directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, depicts the awful events surrounding The Dating Game killer Rodney Alcala both before and after his appearance on the popular dating show. The film doesn't just focus on Alcala, but rather on the lives of the women he hurt as well. Aside from showing his time on The Dating Game, the film also depicts some of his most horrendous crimes, both before and after. The film ends with a textual epilogue telling audiences how he was caught, how many victims experts believe he murdered, and how many were actually confirmed.

Spoiler Warning: This story discusses plot details for “Woman of the Hour,” now streaming on Netflix.
Netflix’s “Woman of the Hour” marks Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, but that was not the movie’s only breakthrough performance. Of all the featured victims, one young girl stands out in the ripped-from-the-headlines plot: Amy, a runaway teen, survived her encounter with the serial killer Rodney Alcala. Amid his murder spree, he was a contestant on “The Dating Game” in the 1970s.
Amy is played by Autumn Best, who makes her film debut with the pivotal role. She’s an alum of the CW series “The 4400,” but, believe it or not, she went into her audition with little to no hope of landing the part.
She was working as a barista at a coffee shop in Chicago when she learned about the opportunity. “I got the email, and I was like,...

Although Woman of the Hour takes some creative liberties, the true crime film’s writer aimed to capture the “emotional reality” of Rodney Alcala‘s murders.
Following a Saturday screening of the Netflix film hosted by Writers Guild of America, screenwriter Ian McDonald told me in a Q&a that he felt “an obligation” to Alcala’s victims and survivors as the true crime genre becomes increasingly ripe with spectacle and sensationalism.

Woman of the Hour, the 2024 Netflix movie directed by and starring Anna Kendrick, follows the chilling true-crime story of a serial killer who appeared on The Dating Game in the late 1970s. The film’s score, composed by Dan Romer (Luca) and Mike Tuccillo (Ramy), sets the tone for this unsettling narrative, while the expertly selected needle-drops enhance its retro atmosphere. Here’s a breakdown of the Woman of the Hour Soundtrack, including every song featured in the movie that offers a mix of soul, funk, and emotional ballads that resonate with the era.

The hype and hook of Woman of the Hour is admittedly fascinating an actual serial killer ends up as a contestant on the cheesy TV show The Dating Game, being one of the three prospective romantic options. He was even chosen by the woman on that episode of the show, a woman who could've easily become one of his next victims. It's wild (and the actual footage of serial killer Rodney Alcala in that episode is uncomfortable and disturbing), sure, but Woman of the Hour very smartly goes beyond this historical tidbit. It's a much more expansive film that's less interested in just The Dating Game gimmick, and is more curious about how this murderer got away with what he did, and who he did it to.

Directed by Anna Kendrick — marking her directorial debut — the film, now streaming on Netflix, tells the bizarrely true story of how a serial killer went on “The Dating Game,” and won. His appearance on the show was square in the middle of his killing spree, and he wasn’t even caught because of the show.
Not only does Kendrick direct, but she also stars in the film, alongside some other familiar faces.
Here’s who you need to know in “Woman of the Hour.”
Netflix Sheryl Bradshaw (Anna Kendrick)
Cheryl Bradshaw is indeed the woman of the hour referenced in the title, a struggling actress who goes on “The Dating Game” hoping for exposure. Instead, she meets and picks a serial killer.

Woman of the Hour not only presents a harrowing look at some of Rodney Alcala's real-life crimes but also features memorable performances from talented cast members. Marking Anna Kendrick's directorial debut, Woman of the Hour sets itself apart from most other exploitative true crime thrillers by not unfolding the killer's lens. Instead, it primarily focuses on the perspectives of the women who crossed paths with the killer and how society often failed to protect them.
In terms of storytelling, Woman of the Hour is fairly linear and straightforward. However, despite its simplistic approach, the movie keeps viewers hooked with its well-written character beats and brilliant performances. Since the movie's characters and the actors who portray them play a crucial role in making its true crime drama more convincing and realistic, many viewers may be curious about who plays whom in Woman of the Hour after watching it.

Woman of the Hour is a true crime thriller, but its approach to the material is rather unique. The movie, which begins streaming October 18 on Netflix, follows aspiring actress Cheryl Bradshaw as she negotiates attempts at stardom in 1970s Los Angeles before landing a guest spot on The Dating Game, where she is thrown into the path of one Rodney Alcala. Known as the "Dating Game Killer" in real, Alcala was eventually convicted on 5 counts of murder and 2 counts of rape, all part of a violent (and allegedly much deadlier) crime spree that took place even as he flirted with Cheryl on national TV.
Anna Kendrick pulls double duty, not only playing Cheryl but also directing Woman of the Hour. The crime thriller, written by Ian Mcdonald, dovetails her innocent search for fame with Alcala's (played by David Zovetto of Station Eleven...

Alex Ross Perry was approached to make a documentary about Pavement. There was a slight hitch: The band kinda sorta did not want a documentary made about them. Or rather, they didn’t want one of those things where fans of the band talk about how amazing the quintet were, in between archival concert footage and Behind the Music-style interviews and cute animated transitions and all that jazz. The group had announced their first show in a decade, set to happen in 2020 — only to have the pandemic shut the world down.
