One of the deadliest characters in the Mortal Kombat universe has just been immortalized with a new collectible. Iron Studios has officially released the first images of a new Kung Lao figure from Mortal Kombat, showing the deadly warrior standing atop a pool of skulls, the remains of anyone foolish enough to face him. The figure is based on Kung Lao’s appearance in the Mortal Kombat video game franchise instead of Max Huang’s portrayal of the character in the 2021 film, a role that he will reprise in the sequel coming to theaters later this year. The new Kung Lao figure retails for $199.99 and is now available for pre-order from IronStudios.com. It will be shipped out worldwide later this year between October and December.
This isn’t the first time this year that Iron Studios has given a new figure to a character from the Mortal Kombat franchise.

Warner Bros.'s 2021 reboot of Mortal Kombat was a fun and delightfully bloody film featuring plenty of fan service while telling a cohesive story anyone unfamiliar with the games could follow. It was a massive hit on the service formally known as HBO Max, becoming the most-streamed title of that year. But despite its overall quality, the movie suffered from both a lack of scope and a lack of female characters among its large and diverse cast. Both of which director Simon McQuoid promises will be addressed in the upcoming sequel Mortal Kombat 2.
McQuoid, who made his feature directorial debut with Mortal Kombat and sits behind the helm of the sequel, told Entertainment Weekly that in addition to returning cast member Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mortal Kombat 2 will also feature Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, and several other as yet-undisclosed characters.

Multiple characters killed off in the first film will be returning in Mortal Kombat 2. However, fans should know that there will be a good storyline explanation for this rather than falling back on hokey tricks.
Ed Boon, who co-created Mortal Kombat with John Tobias, teased what fans can expect from the new movie. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, he confirmed that lore from the video games will influence how characters like Josh Lawson's Kano and Max Huang's Kung Lao appear in Mortal Kombat 2 after having unfortunate fates in the previous film. As Boon noted, fans of the recent games are already very familiar with deceased characters returning, opening the door to make this possible.
"I can say Josh Lawson doesn't play Kano's twin," Boon said. "We've killed a number of characters who are in Mortal Kombat 1 and our latest games. So we deal with spirits and the NetherRealm and things like that.

Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon explains why Mortal Kombat 2 is bringing back dead characters, revealing how the movie is able to see their return. The cast of Mortal Kombat 2will see the return of deceased characters like Kano (Josh Lawson) and Kung Lao (Max Huang). Both characters died in the previous film, with Kano having been killed by Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) and Kung Lao having his soul taken by Shang Tsung (Chin Han). However, with their return, the budding movie franchise has opened the door for deceased character stories to continue.

Get over here... and check out the first official posters for Mortal Kombat II!

We're still waiting (and probably will be for a while longer) on a first look at some footage from Warner Bros./New Line's Mortal Kombat 2, but producer and co-creator of the iconic video game series, Ed Boon, has now taken to social media to share a teasing glimpse of one of the new characters who'll be debuting in the sequel, Kitana.
Her face is kept hidden, but we do get a look at the fan-favorite fighter's signature weapon and costume. Kitana will be played by Chilling Adventures of Sabrina actress Adeline Rudolph.
The Netflix series marked Rudolph's screen debut, but the Hong Kong-born model-turned-actress has also appeared in the CW’s Riverdale and Netflix’s Resident Evil series. She is also set to play the female lead in Millennium’s Hellboy: The Crooked Man.
Boon also revealed that he has seen an unfinished cut of the movie.

Among the fan favorite fighters entering the tournament in Mortal Kombat 2 is Kitana. Played by Adeline Rudolph, the character will be bringing along her trademark weapon of choice in the live-action movie sequel.
The Mortal Kombat films are inspired by the original video game franchise created by John Tobias and Ed Boon. On the social media platform X, Boon shared that he personally watched a rough cut of the upcoming sequel. The video game developer also included an image of Kitana, claiming that he took the picture from producer Todd Garner's phone. The image crops out Rudolph's face, but provides a good look at Kitana's costume along with one of her bladed fans. The post can be seen below.

Speaking in an interview at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Mortal Kombat 2 star Lewis Tan had a pretty interesting tidbit to share about the gaming skills of his costars, stating that Joe Taslim, who fans remember as Sub-Zero, is the out-and-out king among them regarding Mortal Kombat. That fact deepens with anticipation for a sequel to the 2021 film adaptation of the ultra-popular video game franchise.
The first Mortal Kombat movie, which came out in 2021, was an epic battle between the fighters of Earthrealm and the nefarious forces of Outworld. Despite Earthrealm's walk out at the end victorious, it didn't feel like much had been resolved. The ending set a clear stage for Mortal Kombat 2. The sequel vows to go deeper into the lore of the franchise, fusing intense martial arts action with supernatural elements that have become so endearing to fans of this series.

2021's Mortal Kombat movie is getting a sequel in 2025, and according to one star of the first movie, the second installment will be "100 times better." It was hinted that the gripes that fans had with the original have been addressed and rectified with the sequel.
In the 2021 movie, Lewis Tan played Cole Young, an original character thrust into the world of Mortal Kombat. While many familiar characters from the video games were featured, one common complaint with fans is that there wasn't a Mortal Kombat-style tournament in the movie, making it feel like something was missing. Speaking about the sequel with Collider, Tan confirmed that there is a tournament fans can anticipate in Mortal Kombat 2. While he couldn't get any more specific, he further explained that the filmmakers learned from the feedback given to the 2021 film.

The Boys star Karl Urban is playing Johnny Cage in the upcoming movie sequel Mortal Kombat 2. As the traditional depictions of the fan-favorite fighter are very well established with fans, Mortal Kombat star Lewis Tan warned that Urban's version will subvert expectations.
Tan, who played original character Cole Young in the first film, shared an update on Mortal Kombat 2 in a new interview with Screen Rant. While he couldn't get specific, Tan hinted that Urban's take on Johnny Cage won't be what Mortal Kombat fans are expecting. While he's bringing a "unique" take to the iconic character, however, Tan teased that fans will love what the acclaimed actor brings to the role.

Mortal Kombat (2021) broke tradition by making Cole Young, an original character, the chosen one, not Liu Kang. Liu Kang can hopefully reclaim his role as the saga's ultimate hero in Mortal Kombat 2. Mortal Kombat 2 should balance character screen time better than the previous film, giving Liu Kang and others their due.
Mortal Kombat (2021) broke a 29-year-old franchise tradition regarding Liu Kang that only Mortal Kombat 2 can restore. As the first theatrical Mortal Kombat movie since 1997s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, the 2021 reboot had the difficult mission of reigniting the live-action side of the franchise. Between the violence and the special effects, Mortal Kombat (2021) accurately portrayed the visuals and the tone of the Mk games. That said, Mortal Kombat had flaws, including sidelining important characters like Scorpion and Liu Kang.

Hiroyuki Sanada is one of the most famous Japanese actors working today. Before appearing in several American movies and TV shows, Sanada was a huge deal in Japan. He started as a child actor in the mid-1960s, and his acting career would only go up with each passing decade. Appearing in action films and dramas, Sanada was a popular name among international audiences. However, the 21st century was a turning point for Sanada's career, as he started doing more mainstream projects.
For many American viewers, 2003's The Last Samurai acted as their introduction to Sanada. After that film, he would become an occasional supporting actor in superhero adventures, martial arts narratives, and even action comedies. With the 2024 series Shgun, Sanada has finally been given the chance to shine in a leading role for an American production. Considering Shgun's critical success, Sanada's fame has greatly increased. Mortal Kombat 2 will bring back deceased characters through the introduction of Quan Chi, a necromancer who can bring people back from the dead. Death is not permanent in the Mortal Kombat universe, and characters often return after dying, allowing for endless possibilities in the franchise. The sequel is expected to dive deeper into the lore and explore characters that haven't had a chance to shine in live-action, making it better than the 2021 reboot.
Several deceased Mortal Kombat characters are expected to return in Mortal Kombat 2, and the sequel’s new game character is the perfect way to explain how. The upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 will see new champions, such as Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage, but also familiar faces from the first movie. Nailing the lineup of heroes and villains is the key to any good Mk story, which is why the sequel already sounds better than the 2021 reboot.

Mortal Kombat 2 will feature the return of Kung Lao, despite his death in the first movie. He has a history of dying and being brought back to life in the franchise. Kung Lao is likely to be reintroduced as a villain in Mortal Kombat 2, possibly working under Quan Chi and/or Shang Tsung. This could lead to an emotional match between him and Liu Kang. The sequel is expected to incorporate more elements from the game, including fighting previously deceased characters. The introduction of Quan Chi and Netherrealm may be tied to the return of other dead characters like Kano and Sub-Zero.
Mortal Kombat 2’s returning character continues one classic trope from the video games and other Mk adaptations. 2021’s Mortal Kombat reboot combined elements of the original game with portions of the rebooted Mk timeline, resulting in a unique lineup of characters that set it apart from previous films.

Karl Urban marked the end of filming on Simon McQuoid‘s upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 on his Instagram, calling it “the most action packed fun I’ve ever had” on a film. Urban, who plays Johnny Cage in the follow-up to the 2021 film, also took the opportunity to show himself sans beard, which he’ll no doubt be growing back for The Boys, which will be returning for Season 4 later this year.
We’ve not seen a picture yet of Urban as everyone’s favourite action movie star, though MK2 producer Todd Garner had given us a peek of what to expect a few weeks back. Mortal Kombat 2 will feature the tournament that was missing from the 2021 reboot, satisfying fan desires. The sequel will add popular characters like Johnny Cage and Kitana to the fighter roster. Fans are hoping for a climactic showdown between Liu Kang and Shang Tsung, after the first movie failed to deliver one.
Mortal Kombat 2 needs to feature an epic fight the 2021 reboot failed to deliver. Not only did Mortal Kombat 2021 mark the first live-action movie from the franchise in almost 25 years, but it was also the first to earn an R-rating. Reviews for the film itself were mixed, with a common (and valid critique) being that the actual tournament wasn't included in the story. Still, the movie delivered gory carnage and appropriately whet appetites for the upcoming sequel.
