What happens when generational dependency causes a pressurized role reversal that is both tender and heartbreaking when the child becomes the caretaker, and the mother becomes the dependent? Writer-director Ziyu Luo explores this intricate and delicate dynamic in her debut short film, American Daydream. Set in New York’s Chinatown, the story centers on the life of Marilyn (Jessica Lee), a young Chinese American gynecologist who yearns to follow her dreams of moving to Los Angeles and trying her hand at acting. The only caveat is the guilt she carries from potentially leaving her undocumented immigrant mother (Yan Cui), who has come to rely on her for survival in the U.S.
Here with Deadline, Luo breaks down her poignant story of love, sacrifice and our difficult bonds with our families.
Deadline: How did you end up in filmmaking? Were your parents creative?
Ziyu Luo: I always wanted to...

From the director's statement: This is my thesis project, and I'm the writer, director, producer, and editor. The film is inspired by my own journey and the experiences of those around me. Born and raised in China, I came to the U.S. three years ago during the pandemic, facing many unexpected challenges. Two years ago, I met a Chinese-American teenage girl from an undocumented family in Manhattan's Chinatown. She had been translating for her family since she was just nine and if something bad happened they couldn't call the authorities for help due to their status. Her courage and resilience deeply moved me.
The film begins in the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, where an elderly Chinese lady is speaking angrily to her phone, since the one who was supposed to accompany her there, has not yet appeared. She does appear, however, moments later, and the two get into...

The concept that the West, and particularly Europe and the US are some kind of heaven, has been a prevalent one in Asia since time immemorial. At the same time, though, the people who have actually taken the leap do realize that this is not always the case, with a number of movies actually highlighting the fact, with “Everybody's Gotta Love Sometimes” being one of the latest. “My Heavenly City” also moves in the same path, presenting three stories that highlight both the good and the bad of Asians living in the US, and particularly New York City.
Heavenly City will start screening in UK cinemas on 10th November, courtesy of Trinity CineAsia
In the first story, Taiwanese Mavis Fang was supposed to be writing her doctoral dissertation but she decided to take a break to deal with “personal issues”, as she deals with loneliness, depression and a sense of not fitting in,...
