Chris Stuckmann’s Horror Movie ‘Shelby Oaks’ Sets October Release
Chris Stuckmann
Neon picked up YouTube critic Chris Stuckmann’s debut horror movie Shelby Oaks, and Indiewire reports this weekend that the film will release in theaters on October 3, 2025.

Indiewire’s report also notes that Neon supplied Stuckmann with additional funds to shoot new material after they picked up the movie last year, upping the film’s “gore and violence.”

The outlet details, “The new footage recontextualizes some of the original story, but the name of the game for Stuckmann and Koontz was fleshing out the practical effects.”

Additionally, “Creature actor Derek Mears, famous for playing Jason Voorhees in the 2009 Friday the 13th reboot, joined the cast in an undisclosed role.”

Horror master Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep, “The Fall of the House of Usher”) recently came on board the upcoming Shelby Oaks as an executive producer. Flanagan, Trevor Macy and Melinda Nishioka of Intrepid Pictures joined the team as producers.

The cast...

10 The Vampire Diaries Characters Katherine Should Have Ended Up With
Image
While The Vampire Diarieswas full of gripping characters who quickly became fan favorites, Katherine Pierce managed to stand out among them too. The Petrova doppelganger who came before Elena, Katherine, was a victim, villain, and survivor, rolled into one. After eight seasons of mischief and mayhem, Katherine emerged as the final antagonist whom the Mystic Falls gang had to foil to restore peace.

However, many viewers felt that Katherine did not need to die, or be the last bad guy on the show. She had been through the depths of hell for most of her life as she faced loss after loss, after which she was hunted down by Klaus for over five centuries. Katerina deserved a happy ending, and an endgame romantic prospect would have been a good way to do so. She could have had her happily ever after with several The Vampire Diaries characters.

Everyone Katherine Pierce Sired in The Vampire Diaries
Image
Katherine Pierce remains one of the most beloved characters of The Vampire Diaries. She was the perfect mix of villainous and sympathetic, as she did not hesitate to do what she needed to for her survival. Her tragic past with Klaus, where she was left fighting for her life and fleeing him as he chased her down all over the world, made viewers feel for her, as she was just a woman alone trying to live while being hunted down. However, Katherine was quite an old vampire, and she had a considerable amount of power that made her a force to be reckoned with.

Even as she battled for survival, Katherine lived an intriguing life as a vampire. She sired a number of other vampires, turning them from humans to vampires for a variety of reasons, both known and unknown. From major characters like the male leads of the show...

Ghost Game Review: Unraveling the Threads of Morality
Image
With its clever fusion of digital culture themes and the age-old haunted house trope, Ghost Game is a provocative addition to the modern horror environment. This film, directed by Jill Gevargizian, known for her earlier work on The Stylist, features a script by Adam Cesare that grapples with the anxieties of a generation whose identities are becoming increasingly shaped by their online identities.

The narrative invites viewers to investigate the horrors that lurk within its walls and the moral ambiguities of its characters—young adults driven by a desire for internet fame—set against the backdrop of a sinister house steeped in tragedy.

Ghost Game was released in theaters on October 18, 2024, and was soon available on Video On Demand. It describes a time when social media problems were common, and the allure of fame online was unsettling. A film reflecting a society struggling with the consequences of its digital obsessions...

Ghost Game Review: This Crossover of a Haunted House Movie & Screenlife Horror Squanders Its Potential
Image
The internet can be a scary place, especially when its so-called challenges and their rules find their way into the real world. With the rise and dominance of internet culture and the dark web, it's no wonder that the screenlife horror subgenre has grown in popularity and in scariness. Ghost Game, directed by Jill Gevargizian of The Stylist fame, starring Kia Dorsey, Zaen Haidar, Sam Lukowski, Emily Bennett, Vienna Maas and Michael C. Williams of The Blair Witch Project fame arguably the codifer of found-footage and screenlife horror blends the most disturbing aspects of screenlife horror with the haunted house, and creates something far more insidious.

Disenfranchised young adults-turned-content creators Laura (Kia Dorsey) and her friend Adrian (Sam Lukowski) are avid followers of an internet challenge that's rapidly growing in popularity the "ghost game," created and masterminded by an online persona, Mr. Wattley. The game goes as such: wearing masks,...

Frightfest 2024: ‘Ghost Game’ Review
Image
Stars: Zaen Haidar, Kia Dorsey, Sam Lukowski, Emily Bennett, Michael C. Williams, Vienna Maas | Written by Adam Cesare | Directed by Jill Gevargizian

Director Jill Gevargizian follows her acclaimed 2020 debut The Stylist with Ghost Game, a low-budget haunted house thriller based on the real-life trend of ‘phrogging’, namely living in someone’s house, undetected. Sadly, it never quite lives up to its initial premise, and is let down by poor writing and lacklustre performances.

The film begins with Laura (Kia Dorsey) and her partner Adrian (Sam Lukowski) getting caught phrogging, only for the camera to pull back and reveal Laura’s new boyfriend Vin (Zaen Haidar) watching footage of their escapade on a laptop. Then pushy, arrogant Adrian shows up and before Vin knows what he’s doing, he’s been railroaded into tagging along on their latest phrogging adventure, breaking into the supposedly haunted Halton House, the legendary site of a grisly murder.

Frightfest 2024: ‘Shelby Oaks’ Review
Image
Stars: Camille Sullivan, Keith David, Michael Beach, Sarah Durn, Brendan Sexton III, Robin Bartlett, Charlie Talbert, Emily Bennett | Written by Chris Stuckmann, Sam Liz | Directed by Chris Stuckmann

Having built a name for himself as a YouTube film critic, Chris Stuckmann made the decision to change lanes and instead become a filmmaker. His feature debut, Shelby Oaks, generated a lot of hype as it became the most funded horror film on Kickstarter, attached horror master Mike Flanagan as an executive producer, and was acquired by Neon for worldwide distribution rights.

The story tells the unsolved case of The Paranormal Paranoids, a once-successful team of paranormal investigators on YouTube who went missing during an investigation. While many believed it was an elaborate hoax, there remains no sign of justice or answers twelve years later. Turning to a documentary crew for help, Mia (Camille Sullivan) remains adamant on discovering what happened to...

10 The Vampire Diaries Storylines Perfect for a Spinoff Series
Image
Damon, Elena, and Stefan's story in The Vampire Diaries became so wildly popular, that it spawned two more spinoffs. The Originals and Legacies were well-loved in their own right, but now that the dust has settled on the last Tvd spinoff, fans are clamoring for more. The Vampire Diaries Universe is so vast that it has countless main, side, and negative characters with rich histories and promising futures.

While the future of this seductive vampire franchise remains uncertain (with dregs of hope from creator Julie Plec), the original show itself has immense potential for several more spinoffs. It had a sprawling plot with a large number of characters, all of whom were compelling from the start, and many of them could be the starting point for a brand new Tvd show.

‘Shelby Oaks’ Review – Chris Stuckmann’s Debut Wears Its Horror Influences On Its Sleeve
Image
The feature film debut of writer/director Chris Stuckmann has a solid, albeit slightly familiar, premise. In 2008, four YouTubers known for a ghost hunting show called ‘Paranormal Paranoids’ go missing near the deserted town of Shelby Oaks, sparking conspiracy theories and suspicions it’s a hoax to increase the channel’s notoriety.

When the bodies of Laura (Caisey Cole), Peter (Anthony Baldasare), and David (Eric Francis Malaragni) are discovered, however, the focus shifts to the fourth member: host Riley (Sarah Durn), whose disappearance prompts nationwide speculation around the question: “Who took Riley Brennan?”

That’s the question that Riley’s older sister Mia (Camille Sullivan) can’t stop thinking about. Twelve long years after the disappearance of her supernaturally gifted sibling, Mia is being interviewed by a documentary team led by Janet (Emily Bennett). It’s something of a hail mary by Mia’s husband Robert (Brendan Sexton III), who...

10 Recurring Vampire Diaries Characters Who Deserved More Screen Time
Image
The Vampire Diaries' minor characters like Lexi Branson and Rose-Marie were wasted and could've added more to the show's plot. Characters like Vicki Donovan and Mason Lockwood had potential but lacked proper development and were mainly defined in relation to other characters. Liz Forbes and Emily Bennett were underutilized characters who deserved more screen time and their own storylines.

The Vampire Diaries had some of the best, and most controversial, characters on television, but some of the more minor characters were wasted on their limited screen time. The series was known for its epic romances and the cruel villains who were constantly trying to keep the heroes apart. Whether the recurring characters were on the side of good or evil, they still added to the stakes of the show and had the potential to do so much more.

Running for eight seasons from 2009 to 2017, the supernatural teen drama had enough juice to produce two spin-offs,...

The Vampire Diaries: Gilbert Ring Origins & Effects Explained
Image
As seen from its origin story, humanity's most valuable weapon in The Vampire Diaries is the Gilbert family ring. The Vampire Diaries mainly followed 17-year-old Elena Gilbert and her friends as they discover their hometown, Mystic Falls, is full of supernatural entities. However, the series also saw them involved in a battle between good and evil unfold as they tried to protect their home from being destroyed by several evil villains. While most of the main characters ended up acquiring supernatural abilities of their own, they did also have to rely on several mythical objects to protect many of their loved ones since a few characters didn't have any abilities at all.

Over the 8 seasons, The Vampire Diaries writers did add many interesting inventions and artifacts to the show, such as the Phoenix stone, Daylight amulets, and the Cure. However, one that became a core part of the series was the Gilbert ring.

‘House of Psychotic Women’ – 14 Must-Watch Horror Movies Featured in the Must-Read Book

In 2012, Kier-La Janisse published House of Psychotic Women and forever changed the landscape of film analysis. Subtitled An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis, the book is an exhaustive look at films from all genres, each featuring one or more female characters with some degree of mental instability. House of Psychotic Women is split into two sections: memoir and appendix. Janisse begins by examining significant moments in her own life, confronting generational trauma, a troubled childhood, her teenage years as a juvenile delinquent, and her journey to festival programming through the lens of narrative film. Each stage of her life is paired with at least one movie in which she seeks to understand her own experiences by comparing them with a character facing a similar issue. Janisse’s vulnerable and unflinchingly honest writing invites the reader into her psyche while inspiring a deeper look into our own lives.

The Vampire Diaries: The 10 Best Decisions Katherine Made, Ranked
Image
There is surviving, and then there is Katherine Pierce, the woman that redefined the art of self-preservation by surviving against all odds - even if it meant burning down the whole world while at it. She is still one villain that The Vampire Diaries fans can't stop talking about since she was the one who brought a lot of chaos to Mystic Falls. Despite being Elena's doppelgänger, Katherine was nothing like her Gilbert descendant as she proved that no one else's life mattered more than hers.

However, while she was a despicable person all around, there's no doubt that she was one of the most intelligent characters all around too as she spent half a millennium outsmarting one of the most dangerous hybrid in the world, Klaus Mikaelson. While she was lucky with some of her escapes, her survival for all those years was down to the many selfish but smart decisions she made.

Writer, Director & Actor Emily Bennett Talks Debut Horror Film Alone With You [Interview]
Born out of a need to be creative during the pandemic, creative partners Emily Bennett and Justin Brooks decided to make a movie. Alone with You is the resulting project.

Part psychological thriller and part relationship drama, Bennett also stars as Charlie, the film's lead and pretty much only character. Charlie is anxiously preparing for her girlfriend's return but as the day progresses, it also begins to fall apart: she finds herself locked in her apartment, she begins to hear voices, and the conversations with friends and family get progressively stranger as the day wears on. Soon, it's clear that there's far more going on with Charlie and her descent into madness is really unsettling to watch.

Alone with You spawned from the pandemic but Bennett and Brooks were...

Let’s Scare Bryan to Death: Don’T Look Now with Alone With You Filmmakers Emily Bennett and Justin Brooks
Image
Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where the new year brings a new movie (to me at least) that I get to discuss with some of the best voices in horror. This month, I’m talking to filmmaking duo Emily Bennett and Justin Brooks, whose debut feature Alone With You comes out February 4th in theaters and February 8th on VOD. And a hell of a debut it is, as their story about a woman trapped in her apartment is filled with dread and is also shockingly dynamic given most of it was shot with just the two of them in one location during quarantine.

Bennett and Brooks have explained that part of what makes their collaborations work is that they bring different sensibilities to their films, with Brooks having grown up on mainstream horror and Bennett being drawn to more independent, arthouse fare. So I was...

Friday One Sheet: Alone With You
Image
Now this is Photoshop done right.  The key art for Emily Bennett & Justin Brooks' Alone With You is creepy in all the right ways. Design house The Robot Eye saturates the unsettling visage with a warm, grainy tones, and keeps the visage clear from clutter, squeezing the festival logos, title, tagline, and abridged credit block down in the bottom left. The 'shared eye' is particularly disturbing, and visually magnetic, like an optical illusion, or something 'wrong' glanced by ones peripheral vision. That right there is enough to make a memorable one sheet. Bravo....

The Vigil

The first two acts of Keith Thomas’ film are effective enough, as a young man named Yakov, having recently left Orthodox Jewish community after a traumatic incident, is tasked with keeping vigil over a recently deceased man who he soon finds had been targeted by a dangerous spirit. But it’s in the third act when the film becomes truly special as Thomas merges themes of Jewish demonology, grief, and faith into perhaps the most satisfyingly bittersweet ending of any movie this year. Huge credit is also due to Dave Davis, who as Yakov carries a lot of the heavy lifting both in the turmoil from his past and the terrifying entity that’s got him in its crosshairs. It’s quite haunting and also incorporates interesting themes about finding your path in the world even after living through unimaginable heartbreak.

Fantastic Fest 2021 Review: Alone With You is a Creepy Tale of Memory and Dread
Image
One of my favorites out of Fantastic Fest 2021 is definitely Alone with You. It’s a simple story, set largely in a single location, where our main character is the target of a somewhat unconventional haunting. Directors Emily Bennett and Justin Brooks craft a chilling tale that uses shattered imagery to create a downward spiral of dread.

As the film opens, Charlie (Bennett) is preparing to welcome her girlfriend, Simone (Emma Miles). Simone is a photographer who has been away on a job, and Charlie is excitedly preparing a homecoming surprise in their beautiful Brooklyn apartment. She wants everything to be perfect. She has the flowers, the wine, the sexy nightgown—everything. Through some early flashbacks, we get the sense that all has not been well in their relationship, and that this surprise might be a bit of a peace offering as much as a homecoming. But either way, Charlie...

King of Knives (2020)
First Trailer for Dark Comedy 'King of Knives' About a Family in Crisis
King of Knives (2020)
"I'm just sitting back and... letting life do what it does." Gravitas has released the first official trailer for an indie dark comedy called King of Knives, marking the feature directorial debut of cinematographer Jon Delgado. The title is reference to the tarot card (aka "King of Swords"). No relation to Knives Out, this one is about a New York City family the implodes over three days as they careen through mid-life and quarter-life crises. We've seen plenty of these dysfunctional family comedies before. Described as "a darkly funny take on the modern family," and a film "that two disparate generations can fully relate to." King of Knives stars Gene Pope, Mel Harris, Roxi Pope, Emily Bennett, Kara Young, and Emma Myles. I certainly can appreciate the honesty in this footage, and hopefully there's more of that during the rest of the film. Enjoy. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster...
