- Hoffman was a Division III swimmer at Bates College. The 1980s and 1990s saw him as a coach, including for the Capitol Sea Devils swim team as well as at the YMCA in Bethesda, Maryland. Currently on the Advisory Board of the International Swimming League, the first profession sports league for professional swimming.
- Hoffman's wife Kimberly passed away in March 2021 after a four year battle with pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer.
