During her five — soon-to-be six — seasons with The Chosen, series star, Elizabeth Tabish, has been able to dig deep. Her portrayal of Mary Magdalene has allowed the actress to tap into a wealth of emotion as she takes audiences by the hand and gently guides them along on her walk of faith. While the series features Jonathan Roumie’s Jesus as the story’s central figure, it ensures that audiences get plenty of time with his followers, as their backgrounds and journeys are also uniquely important to the tale as a whole. For Tabish, that means that she’s traversed multiple arcs as Mary Magdalene grows as not only a follower of Jesus but also as a human being.

We recently shared a question-and-answer session with Tabish over email, during which she was kind enough to open up about what part of her character she’s enjoyed exploring the most.

Angel Studios released The Chosen in 2017, and it has been a hit ever since, meaning that multiple spinoffs and shows are in the works. Typically, when a series is a success, one spinoff is ordered. If its achievements continue, then the universe of said series can keep on expanding. However, for The Chosen, five spinoffs were announced at once, meaning that fans of the Christian historical drama have a lot to look forward to in the coming years. The Chosen series has been a good performer for The CW and the producers say that seven seasons are planned, taking viewers through Jesus' full story. Ask any of Jonathan Roumie’s costars in The Chosen what it’s like to work with the 49-year-old actor as he beautifully inhabits the complicated Jesus of Nazareth and there are no pauses or loss of words in their response. For example, Elizabeth Tabish, who plays devoted follower Mary Magdalene—the first person He heals onscreen—praises Roumie’s honesty and credibility. “There are moments where you catch yourself and [go], ‘Oh, it’s really Jesus,’” she says. Noah James (Apostle Andrew) notes, “Jonathan has set the standard for being a good castmate and partner.” Adds Amber Shana Williams (follower Tamar): “Not everyone is as kind as [their] character, but he really is.” Roumie, who was baptized Greek Orthodox but later converted to Roman Catholicism, doesn’t take representing the Son of God lightly.
