‘Starting 5’ Boss on Capturing Jayson Tatum’s Championship Run: “You Couldn’t Script it”
Image
When Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum stepped foot on the sidewalk in front of Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre for the world premiere of Netflix’s Starting 5, an announcer’s voice cut through the music to announce the arrival of a “world champion” over the loud speakers. Yes, there was an announcer and a deejay at the high-energy Sept. 23 premiere, which featured a hardcourt in place of a traditional red carpet and rows of basketballs to set the scene.

“It’s a hell of a feeling, man,” Tatum told The Hollywood Reporter minutes later of being introduced to the crowd in that way, thanks to his Boston Celtics winning the NBA championship last season, a victory followed by a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. “We accomplished something that’s almost impossible to do, something we worked very hard to do. I’m glad we made it happen.”

‘Death of a Vlogger’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Graham Hughes, Annabel Logan, Paddy Kondracki, Joma West, Stephen Beavis, Patrick O’Brien, Josie Rogers | Written and Directed by Graham Hughes

[Note: With the film out now, here’s a reposting of our review of the excellent Death of a Vlogger from it’s screening at last years Frightfest]

Death of a Vlogger tells the story of Graham, an ambitious vlogger who gains viral fame after one of his videos apparently contains an alleged out-of-this-world haunting. Following that experience Graham succumbs to the darker supernatural side of the web and deals with the effects of being famous on the internet.

I’ve long-documented my dislike for found footage films. I often think that the use of the format is a shortcut to create horror – in particular jump scares, cut corners in terms of filming quality and, with that, storytelling. However… Death of a Vlogger does something completely different with the format, bringing in the facets and tropes of vlogging, YouTube videos and live-streaming to create a truly modern, cutting edge take on a film format that has,...

After witnessing her mother's death 3 years ago with her best friend Pj in the car, 12 year old Sam Pepper has never been able to move on. Her reclusive nature and nerd table membership leaves Sam an easy target for bullying. Trauma and puberty cause Sam and Pj to not only grow apart but become rivals.

Pj bullies Sam through ostracizing and humiliating her in front of their classmates. As Sam watches the school laugh at her through the slits of her locker, she realizes she's had enough. Indian YouTuber Under Police Investigation For Kissing Strangers In ‘Prank’ Video
Some YouTubers never learn.

The India-based creator Sumit Verma is reportedly under investigation by Delhi police after a prank video -- in which he approaches random women on the street, kisses them, and then runs away -- subsequently caused a stir on social. Police are also urging victims to file complaints, the BBC reports.

British YouTube creator Sam Pepper faced a similar controversy back in 2014, when he uploaded a video that showcased sexual assault under the guise of a prank. That video featured Pepper groping women, which he blamed on a fake hand he happened to be carrying around. Pepper was subsequently blacklisted from the YouTube community on the heels of the incident, and has yet to reclaim his former standing all these years later.

A letter to you about this website redesign you don't like
Simon Brew Oct 17, 2016

We've changed the website a bit. And this we have written to you to explain ourselves...

Dear the fine, fine, fine readers of Den Of Geek,

You humble us. We’ve been doing this site now for nearly a decade, and in that time, we’ve never met a finer bunch of readers than you wonderful people. Granted, we’re trying to put you in a good mood, but it’s true. So thank you.

Er, are you in a good mood? Let's continue, with our fingers crossed.

In all the time we've been going, too, we’ve only done a fundamental redesign to the site once, way back in 2012. And here we are again, four years later. We’re thus here to tell you about how we’ve ruined everything all over again.

For if all has gone to plan, you are now reading this on a redesigned Den Of Geek.

Divisive YouTube Prankster Sam Pepper Quits the Internet After Backlash
YouTube personality and vlogger Sam Pepper has quit social media following the massive backlash he received for a prank in November. Pepper made all of the content on his YouTube channel private and deleted all of his tweets, save for one which simply says, “I give up.” In November, Pepper released a video in which Colby Brock, one half of the Vine duo Colby and Sam, is fixing his car in the middle of the street with partner Sam Golbach when a masked man covers Golbach’s head with a bag, tapes together his hands and feet and stuffs him in the trunk of.

Don’t Give Sam Pepper The YouTube Views He Wants
As you may have heard by now, controversial “prankster” Sam Pepper is making headlines again. More than a year after one of his invasive “social experiments” led to backlash from the YouTube community and a string of sexual abuse allegations against him, Pepper has made his way back into the news by faking a murder for one of his videos.

Pepper collaborated with fellow social media personality Colby Brock on the prank. The target was one of their friends, Sam Golbach. Late at night, a masked assailant staged a kidnapping of Brock and Golbach, bound them up on a rooftop, and simulated a cold-blooded execution of Brock. As Golbach descends into hysteria, Brock stands up, alive and well, and reveals the whole setup as an elaborate prank.

The reason I described Pepper’s latest nonsense is to dissuade potential viewers from seeking it out. I will not link to Pepper and Brock’s respective channels,...

Did This YouTube Star’s Murder Prank Go Too Far?
British YouTube star Sam Pepper has over 2 million subscribers, aqua hair, and, as of yesterday, the entire internet against him. On Sunday, Pepper uploaded a prank video (you'll find many such videos on his channel) in which he carries out an elaborate ruse to scare the shit out of one half of the Vine star duo Sam Golbach and Colby Brock. In the video, Pepper kidnaps Colby (who was in on the prank) and Golbach and takes them to a rooftop where Pepper pretends to shoot and kill Colby in front of an absolutely petrified Golbach. ("We're just kids from Kansas!" Golbach can be heard screaming through tears.) They then let the cameras roll while Golbach — who's been tied to a chair the whole time — screams and cries for about a minute, believing his best friend has just been murdered, until Colby comes back from the dead...

Marcus Akin interview: 'Big Brother is part of British culture'
Big Brother (2000)
Silent Library is going to be your new favourite post-pub TV treat. Based on a Japanese gameshow, the programme features teams of contestants taking on daft, disgusting and dirty challenges for cash. The only catch is that they must remain totally silent throughout. A Big Brother special featuring Josie Gibson, Marcus Akin and Sam Pepper will air later this year and we caught up with Akin after filming for catch-up. I've just watched you get electrocuted and eat a whole raw egg. Have you enjoyed your day in the Silent Library?

"That was just me being hardcore. Metal to the bone. I am metal." What's it like eating egg shell?

"It was quite chalky, but I eat my nails anyway, so I was quite used to the consistency. There was a bit much of it, but it wasn't too bad." After Big Brother does every TV show pale into (more...

Must Be The Music: Pepper and Piano ‘One Of These Days’
Pepper and Piano were the second act to take to the Must Be The Music stage tonight.

The show is airing live from Wembley Arena and the two girls seemed a bit nervous about working the huge crowd. The duo’s debut single ‘You Took My Heart’ shot to number seven in the UK charts, after they appeared in the show’s semi finals. Tonight they decided to showcase another original number titled ‘One Of These Days.’

At first the song seemed a little slow to take off and a little uninspiring but by the time the harmonies kicked in and the girls really got going, we found ourselves being drawn in just as we had been before. Was it as good as their semi final performance? We don’t think so….but it was still pretty darn good!

Judges Comments:

Sharleen: That was amazing, what Dizzee said that was right.
