Lorraine Warren at an event for Conjuring 2 : Le Cas Enfield (2016)
‘The Conjuring 2’ Turns the Warrens into International Heroes [Murder Made Fiction Podcast]
Lorraine Warren at an event for Conjuring 2 : Le Cas Enfield (2016)
After opening with the month with a primer (listen) on Ed and Lorraine Warren, Jenn and I have spent August tackling their first few cinematic adventures. This includes the Perrons/The Conjuring (listen), as well as the Warrens’ brief appearance in The Enfield Poltergeist, which is based on the events that befell the Hodgson family in the late 1970s (listen).

Now we’re up to James Wan‘s sequel, The Conjuring 2 (2016). Released three years after the first blockbuster introduced Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga), the sequel promotes the pair to full-blown evangelical saviors who are willing to cross the ocean to save a family.

‘The Hunting Wives’ Is Bad Satire. But It’s Damn Good TV
Image
I like my fictional TV women like I like my coffee — coursing with enough high-caliber force to take down a feral hog, ruin marriages via sapphic adultery, and power boozy brunch after boozy brunch. If this particular brand of desperate housewife sounds appealing, have I got a show for you: Netflix’s newest Lowcountry drama slash murder-mystery slash erotic thriller, The Hunting Wives.

Based on the 2021 book of the same name, The Hunting Wives follows Texas transplant Sophie O’Neil (Brittany Snow) as she becomes entangled in a friend group composed entirely of rich,...

Who Is Pastor Pete? ‘The Hunting Wives’ Ends With Chilling Twist — and Heartbreaking Tribute
Image
Maple Brook, Texas, was shaken to its core when teenager Abby (Madison Wolfe) was found dead in the surrounding woods, bludgeoned to death. As authorities rounded up suspects and witnesses, Pastor Pete Lightfoot (Paul Teal) soon became a figure in the investigation as connections between Pete, Abby, and her boyfriend Brad (George Ferrier) began to surface. In the early episodes, audiences were introduced to the handsome youth pastor as a close confidant of Abby, but those who understand the hearts and minds of teenage girls might have been quick to sense that something was off. Yes, Pastor Pete was there to minister to his flock, but not that closely. Or that intensely. Hours before Abby’s death, Deputy Salazar (Karen Rodriguez) discovered that Abby made a phone call to Pastor Pete. When she went to question him at the church, she learned he was on leave. Reverend Clint (Jason Davis...

Netflix's Raunchiest Release of the Summer Is Dominating Streaming Charts
Image
Netflix’s new erotic thriller, The Hunting Wives, is making waves on the platform’s global TV charts and currently sits at #3, just two weeks after release. The eight-episode series is adapted from May Cobb’s best-selling novelof the same name. The series follows the story of a young woman, Sophie (Brittany Snow), who finds herself drawn into the secretive, scandal-ridden world of an affluent Texas social circle. Things, however, spiral out of control when the body of a young girl, Abby (Madison Wolfe), is found, and Sophie becomes a prime suspect in her murder.

The show is appearing to be a big hit with the audience right after its release, likely due to its nice synergy of soap-opera vibes, murder mystery, and a sneak peek into the lives of suburban elites. Critics have pointed out the over-the-top tone of the show, but that's exactly why theaudience loves it. The...

Hunting Wives Confirms What Pastor Pete Did In the Series' 6th Episode
Image
The Hunting Wives finally confirmed what Pastor Pete did in the show's sixth episode. Pastor Pete, played by Paul Teal, is central to the new Netflix thriller's gripping crime story, coming into play as the town of Maple Brook begins to zero in on the death of a young teen named Abby (Madison Wolfe).

Teal's clergyman is roped into The Hunting Wives' twisting narrative, as it is revealed he had several connections to Abby and the people close to her shortly before her death. This included taking an appointment with George Ferrier's Brad (Abby's teenage boyfriend with a dark secret), where he told the pastor his girlfriend had gotten an abortion. It also turns out that Pete was one of the last people Abby called before she turned up dead, but that does not necessarily mean he is the one who pulled the trigger.

The Hunting Wives on Netflix: Who Killed Abby?
Image
Netflix’s The Hunting Wives season 1 closed out with a powerful, emotionally charged finale. It was revealed that Margo, played by Malin Åkerman, was the one who killed Abby. As the leader of the group, she shot the teenager in a desperate bid to hide her secrets and keep control over the women in her circle. The scene was intense, precise, and deeply impactful.

Throughout the season, we all saw how Sophie, played by Brittany Snow (you may know her from Law & Order: Svu), got pulled deep down in Margo’s toxic web, before finally breaking free. She started seeing her for who she was, and as the police investigation picks up momentum, we get to see the night of the murder, what Margo saw, what Abby, played by Madison Wolfe, knew, and why everything spiraled.

The Hunting Wives Reveals Why Abby Gets Killed by [Spoilers] In Episode 8 - And It's a Tragic Reason
Image
The Hunting Wives Episode 8 features an epic twist, revealing the tragic reason why Margo (Malin Akerman) killed Madison Wolfe's Abby. The new Netflix mystery series, based on May Cobb's 2021 novel of the same name, follows Bostonian Sophie O'Neil (played by Night Agent actress Brittany Snow) as she and her family move to a small Texas town.

When there, Sophie becomes obsessed with a local socialite and gets caught up in a twisting tale of obsession, seduction, and murder. ‘The Hunting Wives’ Review: Malin Akerman and Brittany Snow Get Hot and Bothered in Netflix’s Deliciously Trashy Drama
Image
In the third episode of Netflix’s The Hunting Wives, Sophie (Brittany Snow) posits a theory as to why her glamorous new best friend, Margo (Malin Akerman), might be sleeping with an inappropriately younger man. Perhaps, Sophie suggests, Margo sees the tryst as a second chance, a redo of her lonely and impoverished high school years.

Margo listens politely, even allowing that Sophie might have a point. But that’s not the real reason, she counters. She does what she does simply because she wants to — “because it’s fun.”

In that, Margo and her series share a guiding philosophy. The Hunting Wives consistently prioritizes steamy scenes over sensible plotting or nuanced characters, juicy twists over deep emotions or big ideas. It might all be incredibly frustrating, if it were not also so wildly entertaining.

Created by Rebecca Cutter based on the book by May Cobb, The Hunting Wives is technically a mystery thriller,...

A Masked Killer Horror Thriller Whodunit 'Bone Face' Official Trailer
Image
"Come on, isn't it obvious? So who you after, sheriff?" Dark Star Pictures has unveiled the official trailer for Bone Face, an indie horror from filmmaker Michael Donovan Horn. This hasn't premiered at any festivals and will be released direct-to-vod this month. A masked killer slasher horror mashed up with a whodunit mystery? So it seems. When a masked killer slaughters several campers, a sheriff & deputy track a murderer to a local diner where, using their investigative skills, they must discover which person in the diner is the actual killer. "An engaging cocktail of slasher, thriller, and whodunnit with a superb cast... genre audiences will find something to love here." The film stars Jeremy London and Elena Sanchez as the small-town sheriff and deputy, with Alli Hart, Miles Doleac, Jared Bankens, Ritchie Montgomery, Escalante Lundy, and Madison Wolfe. This doesn't seem that interesting - my guess is the mask takes over people.

Anne Rice's Immortal Universe is showing no signs of slowing down, with new seasons of both Mayfair Witches and Interview with the Vampire on the way. Tongayi Chirisa, who stars in the former as Talamasca agent Ciprien Grieve, recently teased that a crossover between the two series could be in the works.

Speaking with Screen Rant ahead of Mayfair Witches' Season 2 premiere on Jan. 5, Chirisa noted how it would not be unusual for his character to encounter other supernatural beings due to his work with the secret society, Talamasca. "I think for Cip, it's not uncommon to encounter the supernatural," he explained. The Man in the White Van (2024) Movie Review: An occasionally chilling but pointless crime thriller about a mystery as clear as daylight
Jordan Peele
During one of his interviews, Jordan Peele briefly spoke about the aches of writing a horror film. He finds it particularly difficult to convince the audience of his characters willingly putting themselves in dangerous situations – especially the kind that you see in horror films. Oftentimes, they do not use their common sense as they act in a scary situation. After all, as humans, it’s our natural tendency to avoid trouble and protect ourselves. So, it certainly takes genuine persuasion skills to convince the audience of a character’s audience. When it comes to ‘The Man in the White Van’, similar questions take centre stage.

Set in a small town in 1970s Florida, the film follows a family governed by traditional American values of sophistication. In this case, the family patriarch, William (Sean Astin), is not an authoritarian brute. However, as the ‘man in the house’, he definitely makes most of the decisions for others.

Skai Jackson & Gavin Warren on Starring in The Man in the White Van
Image
In the 1970s, serial killers rose to prominence, kidnapping and murdering people in succession. One of these gruesome figures is the inspiration behind director Warren Skeels's horror-thriller, The Man In the White Van. In 1975, rebellious, horseback-riding teenager Annie (Madison Wolfe) lives a relatively simple and comfortable life in rural Florida. While she may butt heads with her more traditional mother (Ali Larter) and sister (Brec Bassinger), she at least has the respect of her father (Sean Astin), admiration of her little brother, Daniel (Gavin Warren), and the support and loyalty of her bold and fearless best friend, Patty (Skai Jackson). However, when an ominous white van begins appearing around her home and school, following her every move, Annie's world begins to crumble, and she will need all the help and support from her friends and loved ones that she can get to survive.

Stargirl’s Brec Bassinger on Starring in a Dark True Crime Movie
Image
Before she starred in movies, Brec Bassinger first made a splash as the cheerleader-turned-football player Bella Dawson of Bella and the Bulldogs on Nickelodeon, and later won over audiences as the eponymous hero of the tragically canceled CW hit Stargirl. This time, Bressinger takes a leading role in the dramatized true-crime horror-thriller, The Man In the White Van, directed by Warren Skeels and also starring Madison Wolfe, Sean Astin and Ali Larter. During the 1970s in rural Florida, the most that teenage sisters Annie (Wolfe) and Magaret (Bassinger) have to worry about are their prospective love interests, not angering their traditional parents, and butting heads over the younger Annie's brazen, hot-blooded tomboyishness and Margaret's desire to be prim, ladylike and socially acceptable.

But when a mysterious and ominous white van begins to appear around their home, stalking Annie, both sisters are forced to set aside their differences to save each other's lives.

The Man in the White Van Review: The Haunting Echoes of Fear
Image
“The Man in the White Van” arises from the deep depths of true crime, primarily based on the real-life tragedies of Billy Mansfield Jr. The film follows Annie (Madison Wolfe), a 15-year-old tomboy whose fears about a lurking white van are dismissed by her family in 1970s Florida when the American Dream still murmured promises of safety. This dismissal reflects a greater societal inclination to discredit young women’s fears, as if teen paranoia were widely acceptable.

As the narrative progresses, The white van becomes a modern-day boogeyman, symbolizing the threat to youthful innocence. It reveals an unsettling truth: danger is often hidden in plain sight. The film’s tempo, as it meanders through teenage trivialities, parallels the slow development of real-life dangers when disbelief and denial set in.

Finally, “The Man in the White Van” addresses societal concerns about child safety, emphasizing the repercussions of ignoring warning signs. It reminds us that often,...

Review: The Man in the White Van Is a Slow Burn of Frustrating Tropes, Sweet Nostalgia and Bitter Paranoia
Image
True crime has become a boogeyman genre in recent years. It seems that shows, films and other similar media within this vein have claimed a hold on the media landscape, with glamorous period pieces dramatizing some of the grisliest events – murders, cults and other unsavory things – putting viewers in the time, place and emotions of those involved. Directed by Warren Skeels and starring Madison Wolfe, Sean Astin, Brec Bassinger, Ali Larter, Gavin Warrin and Skai Jackson, horror movie The Man In the White Van is a fictionalized account of such an event, a series of kidnappings and murders committed during the 1970s in Florida by an unknown man driving a white van. But instead of a sensationalized display of murder, mayhem and madness, The Man In the White Van is a nostalgic and restrained piece of cinema.

Around Halloween 1975, rebellious and tomboyish teenager Annie (Wolfe) lives in a sleepy town in provincial,...

‘The Man in the White Van’ Review
Image
Stars: Madison Wolfe, Brec Bassinger, Gavin Warren, Ali Larter, Sean Astin, Tom Gillen, Skai Jackson, Noah Lomax | Written by Warren Skeels, Sharon Y. Cobb | Directed by Warren Skeels

Based in part on the real-life crimes of Billy Mansfield Jr., The Man in the White Van is a 1970s set thriller from director Warren Skeels and co-writer Sharon Y. Cobb. It opens with a prologue set in 1970 showing the killer at work before jumping ahead to 1975 where Annie is riding her horse while Edgar Winter’s “Free Ride” plays on the soundtrack.

Annie is the middle child, with an older sister, Margaret who is about to be presented at the Debutant’s Ball, and a gun-obsessed younger brother Daniel.

Her parents Hellen and William wish she was more like Margaret rather than a tomboy who’s more interested in riding horses than being proper or caring if her legs are properly shaved.

10 Surreal Crime TV Shows That Border On Absurd
Image
Crime dramas typically do everything they can to throw the audience off the trail of the story's mystery, and sometimes supernatural or surreal elements come into play because of this. Making the audience question what's real and what's imagined is a great way to build unreliable narrators and a sense of dread throughout the episodes. However, this isn't necessarily a bad thing since this distinguishes the show from the competition. There is no shortage of supernatural series and crime dramas out there.

There are many underrated recent detective TV shows that use these elements to make their stories unforgettable since a surreal tone sets apart a thriller series.
