10 Movies From The Last Decade That Had Low Expectations & Turned Out Amazing
Image
2024's top movies in Hollywood are mostly sequels, but a significant number of franchise movies made less at the box office in 2024 than their previous counterparts. The tug-of-war between expectation and reality defines the film industry, especially its business side. For viewers, the ability of a film to live up to its hype is often the biggest determining factor in the experience of watching it. Disappointing films thus become major points of contention because even something passable like Star Wars: The Phantom Menace receives unbridled hate if it's hyped up too much before viewing.

Despite the continuing trend of Hollywood releasing sequels and the general lack of creativity found in big blockbusters nowadays, 2024's summer box office had a rebound. The pleasantly surprising good releases that lived up to expectations and even surpassed them managed to salvage a win for theaters. In fact, over the past 10 years, in an ocean of disappointing movies,...

Image
Note: The following story contains spoilers from “The Sex Lives of College Girls” Season 3, Episode 2.

It’s the end of the road for Reneé Rapp’s Leighton Murray on “The Sex Lives of College Girls.”

It turns out the location is pretty convenient as Leighton’s girlfriend Alicia (Midori Francis) told her in Episode 1 she would be leaving Essex to work for the mayor of Boston, and the pair agreed to stay together.

Hailee Steinfeld Needs To Break A Movie Streak That Dates Back To A $468M Box Office Disappointment
Image
Hailee Steinfeld hasn't starred in a live-action movie since 2018's Bumblebee, focusing more on TV and voice-acting roles. Steinfeld's recent roles haven't fully showcased her range as an actress, and it would be refreshing to see her in a leading role in a live-action, non-superhero film. While Steinfeld doesn't have any confirmed live-action movies lined up, there are rumors of her appearing as Kate Bishop in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and she will continue to voice Gwen Stacy in Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Hailee Steinfeld has been in highly successful projects for film and television in the last few years, but there is something her career has been lacking ever since a 2018 flop. Steinfeld started her career as a child actor in 2007, starring in a handful of TV shows and short films. Her breakout role was playing Mattie Ross in 2010's True Grit. This performance earned her an Oscar nomination for...

‘First Kill’ Canceled at Netflix After One Season
Image
Netflix has driven a stake into “First Kill,” deciding against picking up the teenage vampire series for a second season. The news comes nearly two months after the streamer debuted all eight episodes of the show’s first season in early June.

Sources close to the matter maintain that Netflix is proud of the work that producers, cast and crew put in on the series, though the decision came down to a matter of viewing numbers versus cost.

Based on a short story from horror writer V. E. Schwab, “First Kill” followed Calliope (Imani Lewis) and Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook), two teenage girls who fall for one another, but come from warring families: one a dynasty of vampire hunters, the other a line of bloodsuckers.

The series also starred Elizabeth Mitchell, Will Swenson, Aubion Wise, Jason Robert Moore, Gracie Dzienny, Dylan McNamara, Dominic Goodman, Phillip Mullings Jr., Mk xyz, Jonas Dylan Allen and Roberto Mendez.

‘First Kill’ Star Sarah Catherine Hook Breaks Down Season 1 Spoilers and Wants a ‘Dark Emo’ Season 2 (Video)
Sarah Catherine Hook and Imani Lewis in First Kill (2022)
When you’re a vampire and you fall in love with a human, it always gets difficult, and the love story of Calliope and Juliette in “First Kill” was no different. But, even though the season finale left them in a tough spot, series star Sarah Catherine Hook is still hopeful.

In the final moments of the finale, we learn that Theo (Phillip Mullings Jr.) woke up after Elinor (Gracie Dzienny) got him staked by his own brother and begged Juliette (Hook) for help. Juliette tried to drain him, “so he could die with dignity,” but instead, she ended up turning him into a vampire. Now, Theo’s become the very thing he’s been raised to hate and hunt, and it divides the Burns family — and breaks up Cal and Jules.

In her heartbreak, Juliette turns to her brother Oliver — having just given her sister up to the cops...

Not to suggest literature’s most famous star-crossed lovers didn’t have it rough, but at least Romeo didn’t grow up learning to kill Juliet on sight — and at least Juliet wasn’t biting back on a primal urge to drain Romeo of his blood.

That’s the conundrum at the heart of First Kill, which charts the saga of Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook), the youngest scion of an ancient and powerful lineage of vampires, and her new high school classmate Calliope (Imani Lewis), the late-blooming baby in a clan of monster hunters. It’s a premise ripe for angsty drama, steamy romance and intricate lore. Alas, though the series tries to deliver them all, its eight-episode debut season is undermined on every front by bland execution that renders it more painless than addictive.

First Kill, which is based on a short story by creator V.E. Schwab,...

What Family Rivalry? 14 Photos of the "First Kill" Cast Together
Netflix's highly anticipated queer vampire series is arriving on June 10. Based on a short story by bestselling author V. E. Schwab, "First Kill" stars Imani Lewis as Calliope Burns, a new girl in town who happens to be a vampire hunter, and Sarah Catherine Hook as Juliette Fairmont, a teenage vampire who falls in love with said vampire hunter and needs to make her first kill in order to join her powerful vamp family. Sounds complicated, right? The series also stars Gracie Dzienny, Phillip Mullings Jr., Dominic Goodman, Elizabeth Mitchell, and Aubin Wise.

Goodman, who plays Calliope's brother, recently spoke to Popternative about what viewers can expect from the teen drama series. "First off, I will say this is a family of monster hunters; while I will say this show has a heavy presence of vampires, we are a family of monster hunters," he teased. "I think it's going...

Main Trailer for Netflix's Lesbian Vampire Teen Love Series 'First Kill'
Sarah Catherine Hook and Imani Lewis in First Kill (2022)
"You can't be together, it won't work." "I've forbidden you from seeing her." Netflix has revealed the main official trailer for a series titled First Kill, which is the polar opposite of the other First Love trailer we also posted today. This series is a spin on "first love" but about teenage lesbian vampires - with a tagline saying "you never forget your first." Of course not. Falling in love is tricky for teens Juliette and Calliope: One's a vampire, the other's a vampire hunter and both are ready to make their first kill. Sarah Catherine Hook & Imani Lewis star as Juliette & Calliope (aka "Cal"), along with an ensemble cast: Elizabeth Mitchell, Will Swenson, Aubion Wise, Jason Robert Moore, Gracie Dzienny, Dylan McNamara, Dominic Goodman, Phillip Mullings Jr., Mk xyz, Jonas Dylan Allen, and Roberto Mendez. This looks extra cheesy - combining bland first love tropes with the rivalry from the Underworld series.

Schwab, which was originally published in the 2020 anthology “Vampires Never Get Old: Tales With Fresh Bite,” the series stars Imani Lewis and Sarah Catherine Hook as Calliope and Juliette, two teenage girls who have a meet-cute at their high school and fall head over heels in love. But their relationship gets complicated quickly when they discover their hidden identities: Calliope is the daughter of a long family line of vampire hunters, while Juliette is a “legacy,” a child born to a vampire family. To make matters worse, both of their families are preparing them for their “first kills,” an important rite of passage for vampire and hunter.

Sarah Catherine Hook and Imani Lewis in First Kill (2022)
Forget the Montagues and Capulets, blood feuds don’t get more bloody than those between vampires and vampire hunters — which means the romance is even more forbidden and the body count certainly seems to be much higher in the trailer for Netflix’s “First Kill.”

Young Adult Vampire Series First Kill Happening at Netflix with Emma Roberts Producing
Image
Netflix has just cast a series centered around a young vampire who must complete her first kill in order to fully be accepted among the other undead. It sounds like vampire hunters are involved as well, but I have to ask, is there a shortage of mediocre vampire dramas? Are audiences missing the genre so much that we need another project focused around beautiful, blood-sucking bad boys and girls. According to Netflix, it is decidedly so.

Executive produced by Emma Roberts of American Horror Story, We're The Millers, and Blow notoriety, First Kill sports a large cast of vibrant up and comers. Sarah Catherine Cook plays the lead, Juliette, who is tasked by her vampire kin to make her first kill and become a true member of the family. Imani Lewis plays Calliope; a member of a vampire hunter house called The Burns. The two girls are set up to be mortal enemies,...

‘Bumblebee’ Review
Stars: Hailee Steinfeld, Justin Theroux, Dylan O’Brien, Angela Bassett, Pamela Adlon, John Cena, Megyn Price, Kenneth Choi, Peter Cullen, Marcella Bragio, Gracie Dzienny, John Ortiz, Len Cariou | Written by Christina Hodson | Directed by Travis Knight

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow Vw bug.

After five incredibly financially successful, yet critical duds, of Michael Bay Transformer films, Paramount – or Hasbro for that matter – has finally come to their senses and injected new blood into a wailing and often entertainingly fleeting franchise. Of which comes in a burst of excitement and possibility with a new director of Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) and...

Optimus Prime Is Definitely in Bumblebee Movie
Optimus Prime will indeed appear in the upcoming Bumblebee solo movie. Paramount brought a big showing for the Transformers spin-off, which takes place decades before the events of the Michael Bay movies, to San Diego Comic-Con this year. The studio is doing their best to wash the bad taste away that was left behind by Transformers: The Last Knight last year. Even though this movie is going to center on the beloved yellow Autobot, the leader of the Autobots will have a presence in the movie.

Director Travis Knight was on hand at #SDCC2018. During an interview, the director confirmed that Optimus Prime does have at least a cameo in Bumblebee. In some new footage that was showcased at the event, Optimus reportedly appeared via a hologram. It isn't clear if that's the came that Knight is referring to here, but he promises that this movie is going to be...

John Cena, Hailee Steinfeld, and Dylan O'Brien in Bumblebee (2018)
Bumblebee Poster Is Here to Warm Your Cold Robot Heart
John Cena, Hailee Steinfeld, and Dylan O'Brien in Bumblebee (2018)
The Bumblebee movie has just been given its first official poster. This comes just after the debut of the spin-off's first teaser trailer arriving online, which appears to be taking quite a few people by surprise. At this point, nobody would blame you for being burnt out on the Transformers movies, but this genuinely looks to be something very different than what's come before it. Case in point, this first poster is relatively minimalistic and kind of sweet.

The poster features our titular alien robot and his newfound human companion, Charlie, played by Pitch Perfect star Hailee Steinfeld. The two are standing with their backs to us looking off into the distance watching the sunset on the ocean. Were it not for Bumblebee standing right there, you would hardly know this poster was for Transformers movie at all. There is no action. There are no explosions. No Bayhem in sight.

First Look at Bumblebee as a Vw Bug in Upcoming Bumblebee Movie
A new photo from the set of director Travis Knight's Bumblebee movie has surfaced online. It gives us our first look at Bumblebee as an old-school Vw bug. I love that we get to see Bumblebee in his original form this time around.

I'm really hoping that this movie will actually tell a decent story that Transformers fans will enjoy. I trust that Knight will give us something that is at least charming and enjoyable. Here's what we know about the plot so far:

The story is set in the year 1987, where Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow Vw bug.

The movie also has a solid cast that includes Hailee Steinfeld,...

Hailee Steinfeld is Rocking The 80s Punk Look in Set Photo From The Bumblebee Movie
As production begins in the Transformers spin-off film Bumblebee, we have our first look at Hailee Steinfeld in the lead role of Charlie Watson. The actress posted the image on Twitter, and as you can see, she's sporting 80s-style punk look, which is the era that the film is set in. She's also teasing the character attitude with her look.

I've enjoyed the work film work that Steinfeld has been a part of and I'm sure she'll be great in the film, which also stars John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg, Jason Drucker, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow,...

Wrestlers in Disguise! John Cena joins Transformers spin-off Bumblebee
Author: Scott Davis

The Robots in Disguise franchise is getting even bigger – and more ripped! After five movies so far, the first spin-off for the Transformers is gathering speed with another actor added to its ranks this week.

WWE star John Cena (The Wall, Trainwreck) has joined the cast of the upcoming Bumblebee film, which is set for release next Christmas. The production kicked off on Monday.

Pitch Perfect 3 and The Edge of Seventeen star Hailee Steinfeld is leading the cast for the film, which features a predominately young cast that also includes Jason Drucker, Jorge Lendeborg, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, Gracie Dzienny and Ricardo Hoyos. Travis Knight, director of Kubo and the Two Strings in directing the film.

The film is set before the inception of the Transformers films, in the year 1987, where “Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small California beach town. Charlie (Steinfeld), on...

He will star alongside Hailee Steinfeld, Jorge Lendeborg, Jason Drucker, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, Ricardo Hoyos and Gracie Dzienny. The studio also offered up the first official plot synopsis:

Transformers Spinoff Bumblebee Casts John Cena, Relocates To December 2018
We have good news and bad news coming out of the Transformers camp today.

First up, the good: WWE wrestler John Cena has landed a lead role in the Travis Knight-directed Bumblebee movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. But rather than lighting up theaters in June, the first of Paramount’s Transformers spinoffs will now open Stateside on December 21st, 2018. That’s a release date it currently shares with Aquaman, so it’ll be interesting to find out if Warner Bros. and/or Paramount shuffle their slates to avoid a clash of interests or, in the more likely scenario, whether the two standalone tentpoles will duke it out for box office supremacy in a year’s time.

Then again, it’s worth keeping in mind that Paramount’s Bumblebee movie, one that takes place in the 1980s, will skew toward a younger audience – hence the casting of Cena – with...
