Dead & Company Mark 60 Years of the Grateful Dead at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park
Image
There was a moment at the end of Dead & Company’s Sunday night performance at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park when you could truly feel gratitude float through the chilly night air. Not from the 60,000 in attendance, but the two men standing with hand to heart on the stage.

Bob Weir and Mickey Hart have taken it upon themselves to continue the legacy started six decades earlier in the very same spot. The Grateful Dead, which they co-founded along with the late Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh, had gone on to tour stadiums and have hit records, but they very much remained a local band — as synonymous with the city as the fog.

And for that, San Francisco rallied to mark the 60th anniversary in a big way. Flags bearing the Dead’s iconography flew over trolly tracks throughout downtown; “Jerry Day” was declared on...

MusiCares Grateful Dead Tribute Is Big on Laughs (Thank You, Woody Harrelson), Love and Vibes
Image
A hollow, lifeless conference hall at the Los Angeles Convention Center is just about the last place you would expect to find a Grateful Dead tribute concert on a Friday night. But it was there that MusiCares put on a show for the ages, honoring the band at its Persons of the Year gala with founding members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart in attendance (drummer Bill Kreutzmann could not make the trip and delivered a message by video) and a slew of acolytes who understood the assignment.

Typically, the MusiCares dinner is a polite affair, with guests seated respectfully for most of the performances, save the all-star finale, a staple of the event. And that’s not to say that previous Person of the Year recipients — which include Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and Barbra Streisand — didn’t have their own rabid fanbases in attendance. But the Deadheads just do things differently.

Nobody Has Ever Loved Rhythm More Than the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart
Image
No two Grateful Dead concerts are ever alike, but the point where they fully diverge from reality as we know it is often the same. Five songs into the second set, the band sets their instruments down and all non-rhythm section members — in its current iteration as Dead & Company, that includes longtime frontman and rhythm guitarist Bob Weir, lead guitarist and vocalist John Mayer, and keyboard wizard Jeff Chimenti — exit the stage. Electronic music loops begin to play as the band’s two drummers and bassist, collectively known as the Rhythm Devils, engage in an improvisational ritual featuring hundreds of different drums from around the world. The extensive drum interlude sees them devising a new beat from scratch, mirroring how our tribal ancestors created music in the first place.

Soon after, two more people exit the stage. The section of the show referred to as “Drums” on every setlist is over,...

The three-night opening weekend, held from May 16 to 18, saw Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, Jeff Chimenti and Jay Lane take the stage to deliver performances of classic Grateful Dead songs, such as fan favorites “Fire on the Mountain,” “Truckin'” and “Franklin’s Tower.” The band’s signature mind-bending visuals were showcased on the venue’s 160,000-square-foot wraparound screen, which created an immersive psychedelic landscape.

The event saw the presence of several notable celebrities, such as Mayer’s best friend, Andy Cohen, as well as Diplo, Miles Teller, Chantel Jefferies and Cruz Beckham.

The “most integral” piece of the four-hour show was the iconic Grateful Dead skeleton “rising from the grave, doing a little jig and grinningly mounting a motorcycle to go journeying through a psychedelic landscape,...

But with recent outbreaks spreading across festivals and concerts, giant promoters like Live Nation and Aeg have been forced to rethink protocols,...

Flashback: The Grateful Dead Play an Obama Inaugural Ball in 2009

Dating back at least to 1977, when Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon, and Linda Ronstadt performed during Jimmy Carter’s first day on the job — and all the way up to Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez at Joe Biden’s swearing-in ceremony — it hasn’t been unusual for rock and pop stars to play presidential inaugurations. Still, there was nothing quite like the sight, 12 years ago tonight, of the Grateful Dead jamming for Barack Obama.

The Dead (then using the shortened name for themselves) hadn’t been randomly invited to perform at...

The years in-between challenged the band like few eras had before. But they still rallied and made the best of a shaky situation, and one of those periods was the band’s summer 1991 tour.

By then, the Dead had incorporated not one but two replacements for Mydland: former Tubes keyboardist Vince Welnick and,...

Dead & Co. Raise Record $1.1 Million at Oceana Benefit; Stars Sing the Praises of John Mayer
John Mayer
“This is the third year and it’s kind of becoming a thing,” said manager and environmentalist Keith Addis, surveying the annual backyard benefit concert for Oceana, the seawater conservation organization, held at his home in the Los Feliz hills. “Sting was the first. [Don] Henley was the second. They’re all guys who have supported Oceana in the past so they’re pre-enrolled in the cause.”

This year’s talent? Dead & Company, who performed a seven-song set — perhaps the smallest (only 260 guests) and shortest in the band’s legendary history — on Sunday night (July 8) that included such favorites as “Dark Star,” “Shakedown Street” and “Franklin’s Tower.” Among the revelers in the crowd were Shiri Appleby, Kelly Lynch, Eli Roth and Rodger Berman, husband of fashion designer Rachel Zoe.

“Their manager, Bernie Cahill, is a really good friend of mine,” Addis said. “Normally, it takes me a couple of months to lock down the talent.

Bob Weir on Dead & Company’s Future, John Mayer’s ‘Classicist’ Style
Image
It was as simple as this, according to Bob Weir: “We all liked the look in each other’s eyes. What eventually rattled out was this band.”

The Grateful Dead singer-guitarist was speaking on the eve of his second road trip — 24 dates in U.S. amphitheaters and stadiums, starting June 10th in Charlotte, North Carolina — with the latest iteration of his life’s work in and beyond that 20th-century touring institution: Dead & Company, founded last year with Dead drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart; former Allman Brothers Band bassist...

The supergroup – which features John Mayer and Dead members Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart – delivered a blistering "Shakedown" on-air, with Weir and Mayer trading off vocals and electric guitar lines. Inside the Grateful Dead’s Final Ride
Image
On January 5th, just after his band Phish ended a four-night run of shows in Miami, singer-guitarist Trey Anastasio received an e-mail from Phil Lesh, the former bassist of the Grateful Dead. Lesh asked Anastasio to join him and the other surviving members of his band — guitarist Bob Weir and drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart — onstage for reunion concerts this summer marking the Dead’s 50th birthday and the 20th anniversary of the passing of founding guitarist Jerry Garcia. Anastasio recalls his immediate reaction: “It was a thrill and an honor.

Bob Weir Returns to Stage on ‘Weir Here’ Webcast
Image
Former Grateful Dead member Bob Weir returned to the stage – and the Internet – last night, taping a new episode of his weekly web series "Weir Here" in front of a live audience at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California.

Weir's first public performance in more than a month (he performed a private benefit earlier in June for Marin Academy) came five weeks after he canceled all public engagements to deal with an undisclosed health issue that emerged when the guitarist fell down onstage while performing with the Grateful Dead offshoot...

Furthur Keep the Dead Alive at Historic New York Theater
Image
The Capitol Theatre holds a special place in Grateful Dead lore. A cozy auditorium about 30 miles north of Manhattan, it's the site of many shows on the bootleg A-list (see 6/24/70 and 2/19/71 for starters). Like the Fillmore East and the Carousel Ballroom, it was a place where the band liked to settle in for extended residencies in their fire-breathing early days. Unlike those venues, it still exists: Relix publisher and club impresario Peter Shapiro reopened it last fall after a state-of-the-art face lift, and the result is one of the best music halls in the country.

‘Move Me Brightly’ Celebrates Jerry Garcia’s 70th with All-Star Tribute
Image
On Friday night, Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir hosted a five-hour celebration entitled Move Me Brightly, in honor of what would have been Jerry Garcia's 70th birthday. A stirring 30-minute documentary directed by Justin Kreutzmann, son of Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann, kicked off the proceedings. Then a rotating group of musicians that numbered nearly 20-deep took turns performing in various configurations, under Weir's stewardship. The event was webcast live from Weir's Tri Studios in San Rafael, California.

Fittingly, Garcia's memory was honored with musical passages that sounded...
