CathayPlay Film Review: Brick (2019) by Ding Wenjian
Image
The concept of urban development in China has been repeatedly explored in the mainland’s arthouse cinema, with the impact it had on the people who see their houses demolished and new neighbors erected, posing a rather intriguing theme, as we have seen in movies like Jia Zhang-ke “Still Life” for example. Ding Wenjian, himself an architect, presents his take on the subject through a story that looks distinctly personal.

on CathayPlay by clicking on the image below

A successful Singapore-based architect, Wen Xin, is forced to return to his hometown, a small city he has not seen in years, to bury his mother’s ashes. Upon his return, he finds the old neighborhood facing a decision between preservation and demolition. Li Mei, his childhood crush who is now living with a man with a gambling problem, among other things, is running a small diner in the area,...

Gore-soaked trailer for Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns expansion includes Ghostface and other guest kombatants
Walton Goggins, J.K. Simmons, and Steven Yeun in Invincible (2021)
The video game Mortal Kombat 1, which was first released last September, is getting a Dlc expansion called Khaos Reigns next Tuesday, September 24th, and today a gore-soaked trailer has arrived online to give players a glimpse at the sort of insanity they’ll have the opportunity to get up to if they purchase the Khaos Reigns. The trailer can be viewed in the embed above, and features “guest kombatants” like the slasher Ghostface from the Scream franchise, Omni-Man from the Invincible animated series, Homelander from the TV series The Boys, the T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgment Day, DC’s Peacemaker, and the Arnold Schwarzenegger version of Conan the Barbarian. The trailer is packed with fatalities and animalities, all building up to a Ghostface fatality that it likely to bring smiles to the faces of most Scream fans.

The twelfth main installment in the Mortal Kombat video game franchise and its...

‘Lost In Perfection’ Ending Explained & Movie Summary: Is Lee Dead Or Alive?
Image
Taiwanese films are like a box of chocolate; you never know what you’re gonna get! Lost in Perfection is a slow burner that goes from exploring the latent ennui of a young urban woman stuck in a dead relationship to morphing into a black comedy dealing with an ‘unattractive femme fatale’ and finally turning into a revenge drama. All these segments are so nicely weaved together that uninteresting moments seldom arrive. The film with its three-word title feels like a slightly more accessible cousin of Decision to Leave, with its pacing and exploration of characters, at least in the beginning. It is only later on that the film picks up the pace and plunges us into an absurd plot, which might not be enjoyed by many, but if they can avoid the nitpicking, Lost in Perfection is a tale worthy of being heard.

Every Character in Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match
Image
While fans of the Mortal Kombat franchise are looking forward to Mortal Kombat 2 -- yet another live-action movie -- Warner Bros. Animation has a new animated film due soon. It adds to the universe seen in Scorpion's Revenge, Battle of the Realms and Snow Blind, but as a prequel. This is none other than Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match.

Here, Earthrealm becomes embroiled in a supernatural war. This time, it's not a tournament on an island but a cult that's threatening the very fabric of reality. Interestingly, Cage Match is going to be using a mix of big names and obscure characters, so let's discuss who'll be involved in Cage's nostalgic origin story.
