DVD Review: Rachel Weisz Delivers Oscar-Caliber Work in ‘The Whistleblower’
Chicago – I have a sneaking suspicion that if The Weinstein Company had acquired this film and released it during the 2011 awards season, Rachel Weisz would currently be an Oscar nominee. After playing an assortment of vulnerable, photogenic damsels throughout her career, Weisz delivers her most potent and compelling work to date in Larysa Kondracki’s fact-based thriller.

Though the actress has won an Oscar before, it was for her rather thankless role in Fernando Meirelles’s downbeat drama, “The Constant Gardener.” “The Whistleblower” functions as a smart follow-up to Alejandro Amenábar’s equally overlooked 2009 gem, “Agora,” in which Weisz played another strong-willed rebel who risked everything in pursuit of the truth. Both Hypatia in “Agora” and Kathryn Bolkovac in “The Whistleblower” are empowering figures with unsettling life stories that hit all too close to home.

DVD Rating: 3.5/5.0

Despite some narrative contrivances and a manipulative third-act twist, Kondracki’s film is...

The Whistleblower Movie Review 2
Vanessa Redgrave and Rachel Weisz in Seule contre tous (2010)
Title: The Whistleblower Director: Larysa Kondracki Starring: Rachel Weisz, David Strathairn, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Anna Anissimova, Roxana Condurache, Monica Bellucci, Vanessa Redgrave A powerhouse drama set against the backdrop of a very complicated and muddied story, The Whistleblower is one of those dramas that induce wearied sighs, furrowed brows and worried thoughts about the default state of human nature. Inspired by actual events, it’s both a crusading cop investigatory thriller and a sort of surrogate, gender-politic struggle-for-equality tale loosely in the vein of North Country. The story centers around Kathy Bolkovac (Rachel Weisz), a tough and exceedingly competent Nebraskan police officer who – facing a divorce, denied a job transfer and wanting...

Rachel Weisz brings emotional power to "The Whistleblower"
Human trafficking is second only to drug dealing as the world's most profitable criminal enterprise, but it ranks first in the most heinous because unlike illegal drugs, the actual product being bought and sold are human beings, more than 80% of which are women and girls.

This grim fact is examined in The Whistleblower, the real-life story of a female U.N. peacekeeper who uncovers a sex trafficking network in post-war Bosnia that shocked the world.

In 1999 Nebraska, police officer Kathryn Bolkovac (Rachel Weisz) is struggling to maintain a relationship with her young daughter. After losing custody to her ex-husband, and facing a financial strain to move closer to her, Bolkovac learns about a lucrative job with a private Blackwater-type military contractor. For one year's work as a Un peacekeeper, she can earn $100,000, tax-free.

Warning: Some spoilers

Arriving in Sarajevo, Bolkovac quickly learns the brutal realities and chaos of post-war Bosnia.

Movie Review: The Whistleblower (2011)
Rachel Weisz in The Whistleblower

Photo: Samuel Goldwyn Films Note: This review was originally published on September 16, 2010 after I saw it at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. I am reprinting it here as it hits limited theaters this weekend.

Not too far into The Whistleblower I was ready to chalk it up as another "inspired by a true story" feature wallowing in the misfortune of others as one person faces hardship in the face of many to set things right. It's a familiar narrative that doesn't make a film of this nature anything special and, for the most part, The Whistleblower is merely mediocre. But Rachel Weisz delivers a starring turn that gets better and better as the film wears on providing one specific reason for praise.

Making her feature film debut, The Whistleblower is directed and co-written by Larysa Kondracki and she has put something together that is not for the faint of heart.

You will probably be ostracized by your colleagues, you may be fired on a technicality, and you could even be killed. In a broad sense, Larysa Kondracki’s film, “The Whistleblower,” can be torn from today’s headlines. Sean Hoare, a journalist who blew the whistle on Rupert Murdock’s “News of the World” tabloid hackings, was found dead in his...
