Deftones are one of the great rock bands to emerge in the 1990s. It’s hard to imagine the band going by any other name, as “Deftones” is strangely befitting of the act’s emotive, dynamic alt-metal sound.
However, at one point in the early days of the band, the young Sacramento outfit almost opted to change its name in a bid to score a record deal.
Ex-Roadrunner Records executive Monte Conner recently recounted the story in a since-deleted Facebook post [via The Prp]. It was Conner who almost signed the band and made them change their name “as a condition of the deal.”
