Celebrate This Notable Day in Dracula's History With One of the Most Underrated Vampire Movies on Streaming
Image
If you needed a reason to dig into some Dracula lore, you’re in luck. Today, July 24, is one of the days from the doomed passage of the Demeter — as first penned by Bram Stoker in the chapter “The Captain’s Log” from the timeless gothic novel, Dracula. But reading isn’t the only way you can bring the memory of Dracula to life, as a movie that centers around this specific chapter alone is now streaming on Paramount+. While other titles like Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Robbert Eggers’ Nosferatu capture the tale of love, lust, and the undead, André Øvredal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter leaves these things behind and focuses on the pulse-pounding terror faced by the tale’s titular crew.

In last year’s Nosferatu, Eggers simply brushed over this rich and bloody chapter from Stoker’s 1897 novel, but fear not,...

After Bombing at the Box Office, This 50% Rotten Tomatoes Dracula Prequel Comes Back to Life on Streaming
Image
After The Twilight Saga and one-off films like Renfield, vampires were truly beginning to lose their bite. Gone were the days of real monster movies where the creature lurking in the shadows was but moments away from pouncing to tear its victim limb from limb and gulp down its blood. Over the last year, vampire flicks started to get back on course thanks to Gary Dauberman’s ‘Salem’s Lot and Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, but many are still sleeping on one of the greatest bloodsucker features in recent years. Luckily, Prime Video is the current home of The Last Voyage of the Demeter and audiences around the world are finally discovering what they’ve been missing out on. Right now, countries like Argentina, Mexico, and Panama have helped raise the title up to the Top 10 where it’s currently settled into fourth place.

Adapting a different part of Bram Stoker’s iconic gothic novel,...

Sundance 2025 Films Sold So Far: Cooper Raiff’s Indie TV Series ‘Hal & Harper’ Goes to Mubi
Image
Sundance didn’t have the plethora of late night bidding wars we used to see in the good old days of the festival, but a number of buzziest titles are actually closing deals late into the spring and into the early summer. Over 60 films came into this year’s Sundance looking for homes, and slowly but surely a number of those are finding homes. Below we’ll update all the acquisitions following the festival as they arrive.

Rhaegar Never Loved Lyanna: ‘Winds of Winter’ Can Deliver the Biggest Plot Twist Only If George R.R. Martin Finishes the Story
Image
Aegon’s dream is a vital part of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, and Game of Thrones leaving this out was one of its biggest mistakes. They already had the perfect set-up during Daenerys Targaryen’s visit to the House of the Undying, but due to time and budget constraints, many of her visions found in the book were omitted.

In A Clash of Kings, one of Dany’s visions showed her brother Rhaegar immediately calling his newborn son ‘The Prince That Was Promised’, suggesting that he might be aware of the prophecy. Now, the biggest twist Martin can give us for The Winds of Winter is to reveal Rhaegar’s true intention, which is to fulfill Aegon’s dream.

The Winds of Winter should give us this major revelation about Rhaegar and Lyanna

The abduction of Lyanna Stark, supposedly by Rhaegar, triggered Robert’s Rebellion,...

“The whole plot twist is dumb”: Sandra Bullock Gave Her Best in a 3 Year Old Netflix Movie That Wasted Her Talent on a Really Stupid Script
Image
Just imagine what a great movie it could have been, with powerhouse actors like Sandra Bullock, Viola Davis, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Jon Bernthal sharing the screen to bring a story to life. But star power alone isn’t enough when the story itself has no real potential.

That’s exactly what happened with Netflix’s 2021 drama The Unforgivable. Despite Bullock’s talent, the film wastes her performance on a weak script that falls apart, especially after its absurd ‘plot twist.’

Sandra Bullock plays a convicted killer seeking redemption in The Unforgivable

Sandra Bullock has been on a break since her 2022 film The Lost City. However, before taking a hiatus from the spotlight, the actress also starred in the Netflix film, The Unforgivable.

Directed by Nora Fingscheidt, the film follows Ruth, a convicted ‘cop killer,’ who is released after serving a twenty-year sentence for shooting a cop, who came to evict her and her five-year-old sister,...

James McAvoy's Twisted 2024 Horror Movie Is Stealing The Spotlight On Prime Video
Image
In 2022, Danish filmmaker Christian Tafdrup delivered one of the most disturbing horror films of modern times with "Speak No Evil." Tafdrup, who co-wrote the movie with his brother, Mads, didn't want to rely on gore to upset audiences. In fact, he didn't want to rely on any established tropes of the horror genre in order to achieve his desired effect, instead constructing a truly unique and deeply troubling film that haunted viewers not only for the bleak events contained therein, but for its social commentary. Specifically, Tafdrup wanted to interrogate humanity's widespread aversion to interpersonal conflict and show how a dogged commitment to maintaining a polite social manner can have disastrous consequences.

Of course, the consequences depicted in "Speak No Evil" were a tad more disastrous than any of us will ever experience. One notorious scene actually managed to speak so much evil that it immediately became an unpleasant core...

A Sons of Anarchy Theory Turns Netflix’s Upcoming Western Into a Secret Samcro Prequel
Image
Kurt Sutter’s latest project, The Abandons, has already got fans buzzing with excitement and speculation. Since the success of Sons of Anarchy, Sutter has built a reputation for creating gritty worlds full of outcasts and violence, and his new Netflix Western appears no different. Set in 1850s Oregon, The Abandons might seem like a shift from his outlaw biker tales. However, there are several hints that the show could be more connected to Sutter’s previous work than initially thought. It could be a hidden prequel to Sons of Anarchy.

The Abandons follows a group of outcast families fighting against corrupt enemies in a lawless landscape. Sound familiar? While not much has been released about the show, that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating that The Abandons will offer a backstory to Samcro's origins and the Teller family at the center of it all. However, with the recent news...

Twinless (2025) Movie Review: Dylan O’Brien is excellent in a darkly comical look at co-dependency
James Sweeney
Urban loneliness is strange. Despite being surrounded by people who could potentially make our empty lives whole, most of us are stuck dining alone. We are so incredibly awkward about our need for people that when we get a glimmer of hope in finding someone, we cannot refocus our gaze on anything else. In James Sweeney’s “Twinless,” two men bond with each other after meeting at a bereavement group that is catered to people who have lost their twins – both of them craving for the oneness in someone who is an exact copy of them – someone who understands the DNA that propels them to be who they are.

Dylan O’Brien plays the first set of twins Rocky and Roman. The narrative is focused on Roman – a big-old softy who is intellectually challenged and gets on the edge when pushed to see just how transparent his personality is. Rocky’s...

‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, David Dastmalchian, Chris Walley, Jon Jon Briones, Stefan Kapicic, Martin Furulund, Nikolai Nikolaeff, Javier Botet | Written by Bragi F. Schut, Zak Olkewicz | Directed by André Øvredal

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a chilling horror film that delivers a uniquely atmospheric take on the classic Dracula mythos. Directed by André Øvredal, the movie adapts a single chapter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula—the doomed voyage of the Demeter, a Russian schooner transporting a mysterious cargo from Carpathia to England. This narrative decision to focus on a small portion of the novel allows the film to dive deep into the slow-building dread and claustrophobia of being trapped at sea with an unspeakable horror.

The film begins with the Demeter’s crew discovering that they have been tasked with transporting a set of crates, each filled with soil from Transylvania. They are unaware that...

Sundance Review: Twinless Doubles Up Dylan O’Brien in Unpredictable, Dark Comedy
Image
Twinless starts like a prototypical Sundance movie––grim and serious, plus unexpected levity. That’s the general formula for a festival that might as well have manufactured the term “dramedy.” In this case there’s an offscreen car accident and quick cut to a funeral. Roman (Dylan O’Brien) stands grieving beside his mother (Lauren Graham) as the casket containing his gay identical twin brother, Rocky, is lowered into the ground. It’s a somber affair––tears, tissues, a violinist’s rendition of “Danny Boy”––until the song pauses abruptly on a false note, engendering awkward silence. It’s the first permission you have to laugh, then to recognize the faint absurdity of a gathering in which mourners approach Roman and bawl at his uncanny likeness to the deceased.

This kind of sad, strange, bewildering tone makes up the first 20 minutes of James Sweeney’s dark comedy (or lighthearted drama?) and...

Does Sundance Still Matter?
Image
At the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, there were movies that provoked their share of buzz and chatter and official breathless enthusiasm. But it’s fair to say that no movie this year generated half the conversation that Sundance did about itself. The buzz was all about the festival — which city it would move to in 2027 (Cincinnati or Boulder? The smart money is now on Cincinnati), as well as the question that’s been the backdrop of that move: Can Sundance, a festival that in the ’90s altered the very landscape of cinema, find a way to sustain its relevance into the 21st century?

The jury is very much out on that. Sundance still generates excitement and headlines, as well as a small handful of films that will have a chance to make an impact. But as much as I remain a Sundance believer, the festival’s mojo is increasingly shrouded in...

Twinless Sundance Review — Dylan O’Brien Shines Twice Over in Funny, Heartfelt Dramedy
Image
Dylan O’Brien’s latest starrer is all about grief. Specifically, what happens when an identical twin loses his other half? Six years after his first feature, Straight Up, James Sweeney is back as the writer/director/star of a new Sundance breakout. Twinless is an uncommonly funny, romantic, and tragic film about twinhood, parasitic relationships, and insecurity.

Twinless Sundance Review

Twinless features Dylan O’Brien in a dual role of sorts. He plays Rocky and Roman, two identical twins who couldn’t be more different. Roman, the macho man’s man, is our lead, a role O’Brien perfectly plays alongside Rocky, his softhearted homosexual mustachioed brother. After the sudden, tragic death of Rocky, Roman finds solace at a twin bereavement center. He meets Dennis (Sweeney), who has a secret connection to Roman’s late twin. After the two hit it off, they go on a journey of self-discovery as they navigate grief,...

‘Twinless’ Review: Dylan O’Brien Is Outstanding in James Sweeney’s Funny and Twisted Comedy
Image
Writer-director James Sweeney is no stranger to novel concepts that walk a tonal and thematic tightrope. In his 2019 feature-length directorial debut, Straight Up, he starred as a young gay man so turned off by sex that he seeks a relationship with a woman, turning a silly and potentially retrograde setup into an anti-rom-com exploration of contemporary sexual identity, Ocd, and the modern complexities of finding love. Sweeney brings the same keenly observational millennial eye to his sophomore feature, Twinless, a bizarrely moving and darkly comic story about feeling like you’ve lost something you never had.

Twinless opens at a funeral, with the straight Roman (Dylan O’Brien) and his mother (Lauran Graham) receiving mourners after the death of Roman’s twin brother, Rocky (also O’Brien). Struggling with the loss of his other half, the shy Roman joins a bereavement support group for siblings processing the death of a twin,...

Sundance Pulls ‘Twinless’ From Digital Platform After Major Online Leaks, Including Dylan O’Brien Sex Scenes
Image
“Twinless,” a comedic drama starring Dylan O’Brien, has been pulled from Sundance’s streaming site after sex scenes and other content from the film leaked online. The leaks came as “Twinless” won the festival’s coveted Audience Award on Friday.

It’s the second movie to be pulled from Sundance’s site this year. “Selena y Los Dinos,” a documentary about Tejano singer Selena, was also scrubbed from the service after the film “suffered a series of copyright infringements,” meaning it also leaked online. There were reports that fans were putting various musical numbers from “Selena y Los Dinos” on TikTok and Instagram.

‘Twinless’ Review: Dylan O'Brien's Funny Search for Identity
Image
James Sweeney’s Twinless is a film that plays with perception — both our own and that of its characters — turning grief into something slippery, sometimes comical, and often deeply unsettling. It forces us to reckon with grief in all its forms, whether mourning a lost loved one or grieving the life that might have been. This is a film about twinhood and the unique, irreplaceable bond it entails, but also about what happens when that bond is severed, leaving only memories behind. With a sharp script and a mesmerizing dual performance from Dylan O’Brien, who seamlessly inhabits the vastly different personalities of Roman and Rocky, Twinless manages to be both tender and biting, a meditation on loss in an era where identity has never been more fluid — or more easily manipulated.

Sweeney, who writes, directs, produces, and co-stars, crafts a narrative that is as much about deception as it is about grief.

Game of Thrones star Aisling Franciosi would return as Lyanna Stark in Robert's Rebellion show
Image
Game of Thrones was a show so full to bursting with characters that some of the most important only showed up in brief flashbacks. Lyanna Stark was one such character. Decades before the events of the main show kicked off, she and Rhaegar Targaryen were married in secret, a forbidden romance that divided the Seven Kingdoms and plunged them into war. At the end of what became Robert's Rebellion, Rhaegar had died on the battlefield, Lyanna had died in childbirth, and their son was taken by Lyanna's brother Ned Stark to be raised as a bastard named Jon Snow.

Robert's Rebellion would definitely make for an exciting TV or movie series. If such a thing ever comes to pass, actor Aisling Franciosi — who played Lyanna — would be willing to reprise her role. "Absolutely. Yeah, I would if it came up," she told Screenrant. "It was fun to be a part...

Game of Thrones Alum Up for Lyanna Stark Return
Image
Former Game of Thrones star Aisling Franciosi has teased a possible return as Lyanna Stark for a future prequel series. Franciosi appeared in two episodes of the HBO series as Ned Stark’s younger sister.

HBO is mining author George Rr Martin’s vast world of Westeros following the success of House of the Dragons. The network has an adaption of Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas – titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – coming later this year, and is developing a separate prequel set during Aegon's Conquest. There is potential for Lyanna Stark to feature in a show about the fall of the Targaryen dynasty during Robert's Rebellion.

Aisling Franciosi is “Absolutely” Open to Playing Lyanna Stark Again

15 Best Female Characters in Game of Thrones, Ranked

Twinless (Sundance) Review: Dylan O’Brien is outstanding in this well-done bromance
Image
Plot: At a group therapy session for people who have lost their twin siblings, Dennis (James Sweeney) and Roman (Dylan O’Brien) bond and start an unlikely friendship despite having little in common besides the loss of a twin. However, Dennis may not be exactly who he says he is…

Review: Twinless is a bit of a throwback to an older kind of Sundance movie that I always dug – the comedy/drama related to family trauma. For years, these movies were a dime-a-dozen at the festival because they tended to be star-driven and often sold quickly to distributors. In recent years, the genre has started to dry up a bit, but it makes a welcome return to the fest with Twinless, which puts an interesting spin on the formula and goes places you won’t anticipate.

In it, Dylan O’Brien plays Roman, who’s recently lost his identical twin, Rocky.

‘Twinless’ Review: Dylan O’Brien Does Double Duty in Sly and Stirring Queer Charmer
Image
After his twin brother dies, Roman (Dylan O’Brien), an irascible young man living in Portland, becomes emotionally unmoored. What is life without his other half? So far not great. The funeral for Rocky is an awkward affair. Mourners line up to offer Roman and his mother (Lauren Graham) condolences only to start crying the moment they come face to face with the living twin. He looks so much like his brother, they say, it’s weird and a little uncanny.

Premiering at Sundance, James Sweeney’s sly dark comedy Twinless might inspire similar sentiments. The film boasts an off-kilter tone — think the absurdity of Problemista meets the wry sensibility of The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed — that shocks before it settles. Like Julio Torres and Joanna Arnow, Sweeney walks a tightrope, shifting between dry humor, gutting devastation and emotional poignancy with varying degrees of success. But even when Twinless falters,...

‘Game of Thrones’ Lyanna Stark, Aisling Franciosi, Discusses Potential Spin-Off and Return Chances
Image
Aisling Franciosi, who played Lyanna Stark in Game of Thrones, recently spoke about the idea of reprising her role in a possible spinoff series centered on Robert’s Rebellion. Franciosi, best known as the mother of Jon Snow, revealed during an interview at the Sundance Film Festival that she’d love to be part of the franchise again.

She said, ‘Absolutely. Yeah, I would if it came up. It was fun to be a part of something [so big], even if I was a tiny part. It was fun to be a part of something so massive; really good fun.’ Franciosi also expressed her willingness to return even if her role remained small, much like her brief appearances in the original series.

Lyanna Stark played a pivotal part in Westeros’ history, as her relationship with Rhaegar Targaryen sparked Robert’s Rebellion. Many in Westeros believed she was taken by Rhaegar against her will,...

Lauren Graham Hopes ‘Gilmore Girls’ Fans Will “Come Along for This Ride” on Her New TV Show
Image
Lauren Graham touched down in Park City on Thursday to attend the Sundance Film Festival premiere of her new film, Twinless. The bromance dramedy stars Dylan O’Brien opposite the film’s writer-director James Sweeney in the story of two young men who meet in a twin bereavement support group and form an unlikely bond.

Graham plays the mother of O’Brien’s characters — the Maze Runner star has dual roles as the twins, one who dies unexpectedly and the other as he attempts to find peace after losing his other half — and while the role is small, the veteran actress couldn’t pass it up. “I don’t often get offered something a little darker and something that felt like a cool challenge,” Graham told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet inside the Eccles Center Theatre. “It doesn’t need to be about me. I can just go do something because I like it.

‘Twinless’ Review: Two Guys Mourning the Loss of a Twin Connect in an Ingeniously Squirmy and Borderline Inappropriate ‘Bromance’
Image
In James Sweeney’s disarmingly funny second feature, “Twinless,” two men meet in an emotional support group for those who’ve lost an identical sibling. That seems as good a place as any to talk about codependency, although it’s the even more universal subject of loneliness that animates Sweeney’s insightful coping comedy, which premiered on opening night of the Sundance Film Festival. Sweeney recognizes that some of his laughs could be in poor taste, but isn’t shy about casting himself as a weirdo, when such discomfort can point the way to deeper truths.

“They say there’s nothing worse than losing a child, but maybe there is,” says Lauren Graham, who plays the mother of early-30s brothers Rocky and Roman, embodied by Dylan O’Brien in an impressive pair of performances so different, it’s hard to imagine the same actor creating them both. Her extroverted gay...

‘Twinless’ Review: Dylan O’Brien Mourns His Dead Twin In James Sweeney’s Heartfelt & Unhinged Comedy — Sundance Film Festival
Image
In writer, director and actor James Sweeney’s sophomore feature Twinless, he navigates loneliness, anxiety, depression and other common millennial pastimes through an equally comedic and heartfelt arc … complete with a few “Wtf” moments.

Dylan O’Brien stars as Roman, a young man grieving the loss of his late twin brother Rocky. At a twin bereavement support group, he meets Dennis (Sweeney), who’s struggling with his own loss. Missing their respective other halves, the two form a bromance while healing from their shared trauma, but a bizarre secret threatens their newfound friendship.

O’Brien and Sweeney have a comedic chemistry that cannot be denied, with the former alternating between the emotionally insecure and naive Roman, as well as his muscled, mustachioed, hunky twin Rocky, who evokes one too many encounters with “mean gays” who are just as misunderstood as the next.

Navigating life as a “singleton,” Roman moves into Rocky...

Dylan O'Brien Debuts New Movie 'Twinless' at Sundance 2025, Plays Two Roles Alongside Writer-Director James Sweeney
Image
Dylan O’Brien is celebrating the premiere of his new movie Twinless at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival!

The 33-year-old actor plays two roles in the new movie from writer-director James Sweeney, who he posed with on the carpet at the event on Thursday (January 23) at the Eccles Centre Theatre in Park City, Utah.

Also in attendance at the event were co-stars Lauren Graham, Aisling Franciosi, and Susan Park.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the “film tells the story of a twin, Roman (O’Brien), who loses his brother, Rocky (also O’Brien), and feels like he’s lost half of himself. After Rocky dies, Roman decides to stay in Rocky’s Portland, Or apartment as he navigates his grief. While attending a support group for twin loss, he befriends Dennis (Sweeney), a fellow lost soul — and the two find solace in each other, forming an unlikely bromance.”

16 Buzzy Sundance Titles for Sale: J.Lo’s ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman,’ Dave Franco and Alison Brie’s ‘Together’ and More
Image
Hollywood is heading up the mountain for what’s possibly one of the final Sundance Film Festivals to be held in the posh ski-resort town of Park City. It’s a place that’s hosted its fair share of all-night bidding wars, where films ranging from “Reservoir Dogs” and “Napoleon Dynamite” to “Brooklyn” and “The Big Sick” landed massive deals before going on to box office, and in some cases, Oscar glory. But it’s also been the setting of some frenzied sales that didn’t always pay off, like “Happy, Texas”or “Blinded by the Light.”

Sundance has already announced the festival is considering decamping Utah for Ohio or Colorado in 2027. Even if it does stay in the state, the focus of the festival will shift to Salt Lake City, which is better positioned than Park City to host the crowds that the celebration of movies attracts. So will...

Fans Slept on the 2020s' Best Dracula Movie (& Nosferatu Makes It Required Viewing)
Image
In 2024, Nosferatu made waves in cinemas as an incredible retelling of the century-old masterpiece of the same name. However, the movie is plagued with fascinating origins and legal troubles as the movie is basically a rip-off of the original Bram Stoker tale of Dracula. With only a few names and plot points moved around and changed, the studio tried to have Nosferatu fly under the radar of legality. However, that didn't happen, and the Bram Stoker estate attempted to have every copy of the film destroyed. Luckily, various copies survived, and due to the film being in the public domain, now anyone can see the original glorious vampire masterpiece, which is Nosferatu.

In the story of Dracula, as Nosferatu follows a similar path, the Count tricks the protagonist into signing a new deed, which would have Dracula move to London and begin a new, deadly killing spree. The story can...

James McAvoy's Divisive Horror Remake Finds Success on Streaming
Image
Speak No Evil, the 2024 American remake of the European horror thriller of the same name, has found success on streaming in the New Year. The film, starring James McAvoy in a great horror performance, has climbed up through the top 10 list of Peacock's most-watched movies, and currently sits in the seventh spot.

Written and directed by James Watkins, the horror director of Eden Lake and The Woman in Black, Speak No Evil is based on the Danish-Dutch thriller that shocked audiences in 2022. The original was an extremely bleak but still satirical story of a couple and their daughter who meet another family on vacation; they accept an invitation to spend the weekend at a remote farmhouse owned by this seemingly perfect family whose child is unable to speak. The American remake is pretty similar, as the following synopsis shows:

"When an American family is invited to spend the weekend at...

If You Loved the Horrifying Vampirism of ‘Nosferatu,’ Watch This Grossly Underappreciated Dracula Adaptation
Image
A disgusting, blood-obsessed, bat-like creature haunts the corridors of your home. You spend each waking moment terrified of its return in the night. Your friends are dropping like flies and there is nothing you can do to stop it. This might sound like Robert Eggers' latest historical horror film, Nosferatu, but it is indeed a description of The Last Voyage of The Demeter. Both films adapted, at least in part, from Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Last Voyage of The Demeter chronicles the final days of The Demeter's crew as they begin to realize the cargo they carry is eating them alive. Overlooked in the horror space, the film boasts gorgeous nautical sets, a killer score by Bear McCreary, and an uber-talented ensemble cast that includes the likes of Corey Hawkins, Liam Cunningham, Aisling Franciosi, and David Dastmalchian.

These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things, 2024 Edition

Season’s Greetings, one and all! 2024 is almost over.

Okay! Now that we’re done reminiscing, let’s talk about my favorite horror things from the last twelve months. They’re in no order, but they’re all super cool and worthy of your attention.

The Cairnes’ Brothers’ Late Night With The Devil scratched an itch I didn’t know I had – a gaudy ‘70s talk show airs a live exorcism for ratings. Taut and creepy, it’ll stick with you.

This particular reimagining of my youth is pretty much spot on with the aesthetic seediness and eye-popping ugliness we were forced to endure. (Corduroy. The horror…) Beyond that, it tells a compelling story of a late-night host trying to hang on to his sanity; the exorcism “stunt” is a last-ditch effort to boost ratings, but as it proves to be all too real,...

Bloody Disgusting’s Top 15 Best Horror Movies of 2024
Image
It should be no surprise that, as another year winds to a close, horror continued to dominate in 2024. Terrifier 3, for example, became the highest-grossing Unrated movie in box office history, throwing all the indie cinema rules out the window in the process. Longlegs caught everyone off guard, becoming Neon‘s highest-grossing film upon release in July, and streaming service Mubi smartly acquired the body horror movie The Substance, where it became the platform’s highest-grossing film at the box office.

That doesn’t even touch on the huge studio earners like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, or Alien: Romulus. Yet the surprises extend well beyond how well horror performed at the box office; 2024 horror is defined by the way it refused to stay within its tidy genre bounds.

This is reflected in the way that 2024 horror found new angles to push franchises forward through prequels and sequels,...

Paul Mescal Showed a Much Darker Side in This Tense, Raw A24 Psychological Drama Co-Starring a 'Dune: Prophecy' Lead
Image
If it was between giving up your returning son who you haven't seen for years, even if you knew he was guilty, or holding him accountable and losing him forever, what would you do? Well, before Paul Mescal and Emily Watson were freeing Rome from tyranny in Gladiator II or plotting to take over the Imperium in Dune: Prophecy respectively, they teamed up for God’s Creatures, and Watson's Aileen faced that exact issue. This grounded A24 drama follows Aileen after her son, Mescal’s Brian, is accused of raping a girl, Sarah (Aisling Franciosi), in a tight-knit Irish village. Pressured by Brian’s false alibi that he was with his mother at home rather than the pub with Sarah, Aileen must decide between family and justice.

Blumhouse Horror Movie With 84% Audience Approval On Rotten Tomatoes Becomes Streaming Hit
Image
When it comes to horror, Blumhouse continues to be a Hollywood leader in terms of its output. The company is behind horror hits like Get Out (2017), M3GAN (2022), Hush (2016), and The Invisible Man (2021), with the Blumhouse model dating back to 2007's Paranormal Activity. Making films at low budget levels, giving filmmakers creative freedom, and releasing horror films through the studio system is how Blumhouse operates, and it's resulted in some strong slates in recent years.

Blumhouse has had a relatively strong 2024, starting the year off with Night Swim, which may not have fared well with critics but was a box office success. The same can be said for Imaginary, but the company's following movie, Afraid, failed to really connect critically or commercially. In September, however, Blumhouse released a horror movie that can be considered its best of the year, earning strong scores on Rotten Tomatoes and striking gold at the box office.

‘Speak No Evil’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, Scoot McNairy, Aisling Franciosi, Alix West Lefler, Dan Hough | Written and Directed by James Watkins

Directed by James Watkins and produced by Blumhouse, Speak No Evil is an American remake of the 2002 Danish thriller of the same name (also known as Gaesterne). Exceptionally bleak and utterly devastating, the original film is one of the most chilling horror films of the last decade, and while the English language version doesn’t quite have the same impact, it’s still a deliciously nasty thriller with a stand-out performance from James McAvoy.

The film begins in Italy, where American couple Ben and Louise are on holiday with their anxious 11 year-old daughter Agnes (Alix West Lefler). They’re soon befriended by British couple Paddy and Ciara (James McAvoy and The Nightingale‘s Aisling Franciosi), whose mute young son Alfie (Dan Hough) is the same age as Agnes.

James McAvoy’s 83% Rotten Tomatoes Horror Remake Is an Immediate Streaming Hit
Image
It’s not often that a movie gets remade only two years after the original, but earlier this year James McAvoy starred in Speak No Evil, a remake of the 2022 film of the same name. After grossing $36 million domestically and $38 million in foreign markets for a worldwide total of $75 million, Speak No Evil joined other Universal movies like Twisters and Despicable Me 4 on Peacock. Speak No Evil has effectively silenced its streaming competitors and risen to the #3 spot on Peacock, only short of The Grinch (2018) and Sing (2016). Speak No Evil also stars Scoot McNairy, Mackenzie Davis, and Aisling Franciosi, and the film currently sits at an 83% score from critics and an 84% rating from general audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.
