Marc Maron has been hosting the “Wtf” podcast for 16 years and recently noted (via The Daily Beast) that his show was an early one that proved podcasts were a “viable medium” with global appeal. However, Maron is aware that means he’s also partly to blame for podcasts ultimately becoming another entertainment avenue that promotes toxicity.
“We weren’t the first, but in terms of making it a viable medium, we were certainly one of the OGs. We changed the world, literally. We showed the world that it was possible to create a specific type of show on one’s own terms,” Maron wrote in a blog post. “We helped unleash an exciting type of delivery system for pure self expression. Sadly, on some level, we also unleashed a format that can be used for dubious means, propaganda and pure evil. But hey, it’s not the atomic bomb.”

Friday night is here, and that means Real Time with Bill Maher gets the final word in late-night TV. So what should fans expect to see tonight on HBO?
Real Time has plenty to talk about after another busy week. President Donald Trump continued his feud with Harvard University, and the House worked to pass the president's "beautiful" bill. Maher's late-night TV colleagues had the chance to sink their teeth into these stories.
Unfortunately, we won't get to hear what Bill Maher has to say about these topics or anything else on Friday. There will not be a new episode of Real Time with Bill Maher. Instead, HBO will air the documentary Pee-wee as Himself during the late-night show's normal timeslot.
It doesn't come as too big of a surprise that Maher and his team have the night off. Monday is Memorial Day, so Real Time gets an extra day...

Saturday Night Live is one of the most challenging feats in show business, writing a 90-minute show from scratch in less than a week, then performing live in front of an audience of millions. But you know what’s even harder? Pulling off a segment of the video podcast Kill Tony, at least according to its host and namesake, Tony Hinchcliffe.
For the uninitiated, Kill Tony features Hinchcliffe drawing the names of aspiring comedians out of a bucket, who then perform one minute of stand-up for a panel of comics and a live audience. A few of the comics kill. Several of them die painful comedy deaths.
At least Lorne Michaels and “SNL has its own writers and producers and everything,” Hinchcliffe told Dana Carvey and David Spade on the Fly on the Wall podcast. “A bunch of people clank their heads together.”
“To help make a star,” added Spade.

Kamala Harris cut ties with Joe Biden after an embarrassing gaffe at a Harris campaign event.
At the height of 2024’s presidential race, Biden appeared at a Pennsylvania firehouse for a commemoration of the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. As he posed with people sporting pro-Trump gear, Biden briefly donned a crowd member’s ‘Trump 2024’ visor.
Biden told the audience member, “I need that hat.” When the person yelled, “Put it on!” Biden responded, “I ain’t going that far.” However, he then proceeded to put the hat on over the Station 627 ball cap he was wearing to honor the volunteer fire company.
The Trump campaign immediately jumped on the opportunity to suggest that even the Democratic president supported Trump.
According to the new bombshell book Original Sin, co-authored by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson, Harris – who became the Democratic nominee in July following Biden ending his re-election bid – asked her advisers incredulously,...

Comedy is legal now, but only if everyone tells the exact same jokes about transgender baristas.
In this past election cycle, comedians played an unprecedented role in the political process as the Trump/Vance ticket targeted popular podcasts for their outreach to America’s comedy-lovers and drywall-punchers. Comics who had built veritable media empires by branding themselves as anti-woke, anti-cancel-culture and pro-free-speech suddenly found themselves sitting across from the most powerful people in the world talking about coffee and family, and it became clear to more skeptical comedy fans that the role of the comedian in modern society had become something much more sinister than the simple responsibility of “person who makes people laugh.”
During a recent episode of Office Hours Live with Tim Heidecker, the absurdist comic spoke with Kumail Nanjiani about how drastically the world of stand-up comedy has changed since they started out in the industry. Today,...

Triple H went out of his way and introduced a new addition to our favourite WrestleMania weekend, The Roast of WrestleMania. This comedy show was hosted by Tony Hinchcliffe. It featured top WWE names like Paul Heyman, Nia Jax, and Sami Zayn.
Jax showed us that wrestling isn’t only punches and suplexes. It had the audience dying when Jax, a WWE superstar and a distant cousin of Roman Reigns took the stage.
She was really personal, savage, and unhinged throughout her set, especially when she was going against Cody Rhodes. Yes, it was comical, messy, and downright crazy, but that is the whole point of a roast!
Nia Jax’s ugly take-down of Cody Rhodes
Nia Jax certainly didn’t hold back when it came to Cody Rhodes. She dropped the line, “Cody, you’re not Roman Reigns,” with the whole audience laughing, mostly because of her family relationship to the Tribal Chief,...

The WWE Women’s roster has been absolutely on fire with a flurry of new superstars taking over the reins. However, when it comes to splitting a few ribs, there are very few who can actually make magic happen. Blending all the seriousness of the ring with a few jokes which might cross the line at times, Queen Nia Jax has always stood out from the rest.
Much to the chagrin of Nia Jax, she wasn’t a part of WrestleMania 41 as she wasn’t medically cleared, as per reports. Inside reports state that she was initially planned to go head-on against The Storm, Jade Cargill, but due to her injury, it couldn’t happen. Eventually, Cargill duked it out with Naomi after a prolonged storyline in the Road to The Show of Shows. Despite her absence from the ring, she was a part of the Roast of WrestleMania, which...

After all wild speculations and two days of wrestling madness, WrestleMania 41 met its due conclusion. With two massive twists rocking the WWE Universe in a span of two days, to lighten up the mood, The Roast of WrestleMania was brought in. It was a non-televised show hosted by WWE, labelled as an ‘out-of-the-box’ project slated to happen at the BleauLive Theater in the Fontainebleau Las Vegas hotel.
With the fans still trying to make sense of the insane wrestling action they witnessed, this comedy show served as a mood-lightener for all of them. At the end of The Showcase of Immortals, there were complaints that WWE somehow failed to deliver the hype created in the last iteration of Mania. The Rock’s absence and the lack of a few incredible twists hither and yon somehow dampened the spirits of the fans.

Podcasters and creators could find a new home on Netflix.
On the streaming giant’s first quarter earnings call Thursday, co-ceo Ted Sarandos said the company is “constantly looking at all different types of content and content creators” to feature on the platform. The company already produces several of its own podcasts related to its shows or talent, which are currently widely available, but Sarandos said some podcasts could find their way to airing on Netflix.
“As the popularity of video podcasts grow, I suspect you’ll see some of them find their way to Netflix,” Sarandos said in response to an analyst question.
Asked specifically about competition from YouTube, which has been the home to many video podcasts, as well as other short-form content, Sarandos said Netflix is a welcoming place for creators, but positioned it as the “best place for premium content, as defined by fans.” In that vein,...

Austin, Texas, who’s ready for the best fucking parody of their lives?
This week, Tony Hinchcliffe and his wildly popular podcast, live show and amateur comedy showcase Kill Tony came to Netflix for the first of three streaming specials that the controversial conservative comedian will follow with a new Netflix-exclusive hour of stand-up. Hinchcliffe’s four-part megadeal came on the heels of his disastrous set at the Donald Trump rally at Madison Square Garden back in October 2024, where his predictable, unoriginal and racist routine forced now-President Trump to distance himself from the comic amid international outcry. I guess some entire races of people just don’t understand roast comedy.
Absurdist comedian Tim Heidecker, on the other hand, has such an advanced understanding of insult humor that he’s not just a Hinchcliffe fan — he’s also a Hinchcliffe imitator. After coming out in support of Hinchcliffe’s in-your-face,...

In the United States, YouTube has been generating more watch time per month than Netflix (and every other streaming service) for the past two years straight. That’s just a fact.
And it’s a fact that Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos doesn’t seem to like. He’s been talking a lot about YouTube recently, and the crux of his messaging is, Hey, creators and viewers, you may think you’ve got it good on YouTube, but trust me, you could have it better on Netflix. Just a couple weeks ago, at a Paley Media Council event, he said Netflix is the “spending time” business, while YouTube is the “killing time” business.
Eesh. It is true that Netflix has access to massive production power, but it’s pretty adept at killing things, too. Creators want control over what they make, and when and how they make it, which is what keeps them on YouTube.

Kill Tony: Kill or Be Killed is now streaming on Netflix as the TV-ma-rated comedy special puts nearly two dozen major names in comedy in the same room.
Kill Tony: Kill or Be Killed is Netflix's newest comedy special, which debuted on the streamer on April 7, taking a unique twist on host Tony Hinchcliffe's Kill Tony podcast.
Hosted at the Comedy Mothership in Austin, Texas, this special is the latest episode of Hinchcliffe's podcast, complete with a live audience and a release on Netflix rather than YouTube. While this comes with plenty of controversy, it stars Hinchcliffe alongside a hoard of comedians diving into popular current events.

Your favorite streamer is back this week with a somewhat manageable 16 new titles this week. Maybe Netflix figured out that adding a hundred hours of shows in one week was a bit much, even for our binge-watching brains.
Everyone will have their favorite here, of course. Whether kids' shows or baseball are in your wheelhouse, Netflix has you covered this week. Standup comedy or an adaptation of Shakespeare, it's all here. Oh, wait, you like science fiction? Do we ever have good news for you!
I assume that by now you've watched Adolescence. If not, what the heck are you waiting for? I mean, it's only one of the best shows Netflix has introduced in a very long time. You better get crackin', cuz Netflix has more coming up for you this week. Including a new season of one of my favorite shows ever. Well, more or less.

Netflix head Ted Sarandos is once again sticking to his guns when it comes to the streamer’s comedy specials. During a conversation Friday at a Paley Media Council event in New York that TheWrap attended, the CEO defended giving comedy specials to both Dave Chappelle and Tony Hinchcliffe.
After the release of Chappelle’s 2021 special “The Closer,” the comedian came under fire for his jokes about the transgender community. Sarandos admitted that whether or not to stick by an artist are “never easy calls” and said that the decision to back Chappelle came down to “protecting free speech and free expression.”
“I knew that the art form itself always needed a safe place to try things out. Comedians define the culture in a bunch of ways, and they do that by figuring out where the lines are and the joke is,” the Netflix head explained during Friday’s “Beyond...

Ted Sarandos, co-ceo of Netflix, met with Donald Trump in December at the then-President-elect’s Mar-a-Lago compound in Florida. But according to Sarandos, the two didn’t “talk shop.”
The Netflix boss, speaking Friday at the Paley Media Council event “Beyond the Stream: A Conversation with Ted Sarandos” in New York City, said it was the first time he met Trump. “We had a nice long dinner together,” he said.
Asked by interviewer Ben Smith, editor in chief of Semafor, whether Trump tried to sell Sarandos on the documentary featuring his third wife, Melania — the rights to which were acquired by Amazon — Sarandos said, no, Trump did not. Is Trump a fan of Netflix? “He said Melania and [son] Barron were big fans,” Sarandos said.
Meanwhile, Smith continued, did Amazon “overpay” for the Melania doc? (Amazon is reportedly shelling out $40 million for the film and docu-series about the First Lady.) Sarandos said he didn’t know.

Netflix just closed a deal with controversial podcaster and open mic host Tony Hinchcliffe where they will stream three Kill Tony specials and a new hour from the conservative comedy icon. Clearly, Netflix Comedy believes that, no matter how bad a stand-up bombs, every Republican comic deserves a second shot.
Back in 2016, the streaming giant was just getting started in its one-company arms race to become the undisputed king of stand-up in the still-expanding streaming industry. Supported by comedy giants like John Mulaney, Tom Segura and Bill Burr, Netflix’s plan to become the most comedy scene's desirable home for streaming-original stand-up was just ramping up when it acquired a definitely-not-Netflix-original hour from an Ohio-born roast comedian whose amateur/professional stand-up showcase at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles was similarly picking up steam.

Tony Hinchcliffe, the controversial comedian who called Puerto Rico “garbage” and made other offensive jokes at a Donald Trump rally before the 2024 election, has secured a Netflix deal.
The deal includes a solo stand-up special for Hinchcliffe and three specials spun-off from his popular live comedy show/YouTube series, Kill Tony. The specials will find Hinchcliffe and some fellow panelists reacting to, and judging, stand-up sets from aspiring comedians. Hinchcliffe will be joined by a mix of established comics and celebrity guests during the specials, though a full lineup hasn’t been announced yet.

Netflix is expanding its relationship with comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, ordering three Kill Tony comedy specials, as well as a new stand-up comedy special.
Hinchcliffe is no stranger to Netflix viewers, he had a previous stand-up special for the streamer and has participated in some of its roast content, perhaps most notably last year’s roast of Tom Brady, where his set was among the most shared on social media. He also famously performed a set at then-candidate Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden last year, where a joke about Puerto Rico angered some viewers.
Still, his Kill Tony podcast frequently tops the comedy charts, and features wannabe comedians putting their names in a hat and getting one minute to impress Hinchcliffe, co-host Brian Redban and celebrity guests that include the likes of Joe Rogan, Shane Gillis, Theo Von, Post Malone and others.

The specials will feature a mix of established comics and aspiring comedians, as Hinchcliffe and his panel of funnymen provide brutal and unfiltered feedback. There will also be surprise celebrity guests.
In addition to the “Kill Tony” specials, Hinchcliffe will also perform a one-hour stand-up special for Netflix, as part of the deal. Premiere dates and talent lineups will be announced at a later date.

Don’t expect Kim Kardashian to appear on a roast anytime soon.
The entrepreneur addressed her appearance on The Roast of Tom Brady during the Season 6 premiere of Hulu’s The Kardashians and said she wouldn’t want to endure that again.
“I will never, ever do a roast again,” Kardashian said in a preview for the next episode of The Kardashians.
Episode 2 of The Kardashians Season 6 will feature Kardashian attending the 2024 Met Gala, where she was bombarded by reporters asking about her appearance on the Netflix comedy special. Kardashian was a guest star at the roast of Tom Brady and was greeted with loud boos from the audience.
While getting fitted with her costume for the gala, Kardashian vented about the jokes at the event made at her expense the night before.
“This is so f***ed up,” Kardashian says in the preview. “It’s just like the easiest joke.

Trump White House Takes Aim at Selena Gomez in New Video Responding to Her Crying About Deportations
In a new video produced by the White House, the Trump administration blasted Selena Gomez for posting an Instagram video in which she filmed herself crying over deportations of undocumented immigrants by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Gomez deleted the original post within hours, after drawing criticism from conservative figureheads. “Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people,” she wrote in a follow-up post. But footage of Gomez crying continues to circulate online. The official White House post, titled “Moms of Victims of Illegal Aliens Slam Selena Gomez: You Didn’t Cry for Our Daughters,” was published Friday. It includes pieces of Gomez’s original video, edited alongside reaction interviews with three women whose children were allegedly killed by undocumented people.
“I just wanted to say that I’m so sorry,” Gomez said in her Instagram Story video on Monday. “All my people are getting attacked, the children. I don’t understand.

Your star sign can tell you which comedian will make you laugh the hardest, according to the online astrologers over at Times of India.
Okay, we’ll bite — which stand-up comic corresponds to your particular astrological sign? Here are the dubious, er, divinely inspired results…
Aries
Aries people, with their quick wits and competitive nature, “are drawn to comedians who bring the heat,” says Toi. That means Dave Chappelle is Aries’ favorite comic, thanks to his provocative takes and unapologetic subject material.
Taurus
Give a Taurus a comic with a laid-back, relaxed vibe that still has some substance — in other words, how about John Mulaney? “Mulaney’s balance of quirky and familiar will resonate deeply with the steady Taurus.”
Gemini
Geminis are quick thinkers who can navigate difficult topics, explains Toi, making Ali Wong a likely fit. Wong’s “ability to jump between personal and societal observations matches Gemini’s multifaceted personality.

When Anthony Jeselnik logs onto a Zoom chat to discuss his cutting new special, Bones and All, he does something I wasn’t anticipating: He smiles warmly.
Fans of the 45-year-old comic have come to expect a certain onstage demeanor — that combative expression, the precise delivery, those straightforward setups about family members and loved ones that lead to horrible, surprising, utterly killer punchlines. Jeselnik is celebrating 20 years in stand-up, and by now most everyone knows that the person we see up there telling jokes is a character — an abrasive, sometimes obtuse jerk who shocks us with his nonchalant tales of dead grandmothers and abusive fathers. We realize that the real Jeselnik knows that it’s not good to drop a baby. The actual guy never took his self-proclaimed chocolate-addicted girlfriend to meet a junkie so he could ask her why she’s not as skinny. Still, the pleasant man I...

Far-right open mic host Tony Hinchcliffe has no apologies for the Black, Puerto Rican and Latino Americans he insulted on the national stage last month, but he can at least apologize to comedians for pretending to be one of them.
After Hinchcliffe performed an unoriginal, unfunny and racist stand-up set at the Madison Square Garden rally for Donald Trump on October 27, 2024, political commentators on both sides of the aisle objected to the Trump campaign’s decision to have a “roast comedian” represent the values of the once and future president. On the other hand, many members of the comedy community were elated to see the controversial Kill Tony host and the all-time worst stand-up to ever shoot a terrible Netflix special embarrass himself on such a massive, international stage.

Empire actor Jussie Smollett, who was found guilty in 2021 of felony disorderly conduct stemming from a false police report he filed, has had his conviction overturned.
As first reported by the Chicago Tribune, the Illinois Supreme Court overturned Smollett’s trial verdict on Thursday, determining that the decision to retry Smollett (after charges against him were initially dropped in 2019) violated the actor’s rights.

The comic who caused a stir by slurring Puerto Rico as an “island of garbage” at Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden campaign event in late October spent the subsequent episode of his podcast mocking the controversy and the media for treating the joke as a political liability.
“I apologize,” Hinchcliffe said on his Kill Tony live podcast with a small pause for impact at the top of the episode, “to absolutely nobody. Not to the Puerto Ricans, not to the whites, not to the Blacks, not to the Palestinians, not to the Jews and not to my own mother. I mocked my own mother during the set. Nobody clipped that. No headlines about me making fun of my own mother.”
Hinchcliffe was a guest comedian who opened Trump’s rally, appearing at the podium at the 19,500-seat venue stadium among several of Trump’s surrogates and advocates. The tone...

Now that the dust has settled from the biggest stand-up bomb of the 2024 election cycle, open mic host and right-wing provocateur Tony Hinchcliffe is ready to make amends with none of the entire races he insulted.
On Sunday, October 27th, the Kill Tony host performed at a rally for President-Elect Donald Trump at Madison Square Garden, a stadium where Hinchcliffe had recently hosted an episode of his amateur comedian roast/Star Search podcast. Hinchcliffe found the new crowd at Msg to be less enthused about his half-baked, predictable, sub-4chan-level racist humor than his usual crowd, and by Monday morning, his laughless routine was front-page news on every media outlet in the country. Hinchcliffe’s hacky jokes about Black people carving watermelons on Halloween, Latino people having a lot of kids and Puerto Rico being an island of garbage failed to impress even the furthest-right pundits like Ann Coulter, and...

Since Donald Trump won the presidential election, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe has been gloating a bit on social media over the fact that his Madison Square Garden performance was not the disaster for the campaign that many predicted.
He’s also not apologizing for his set at the October 27 Trump rally, in which he called Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage” and made other racist jokes. Trump and his campaign tried to distance themselves from Hinchcliffe’s performance afterward.
The latest Kill Tony podcast, recorded the night after the Msg event, showed that while he refused to back away from his remarks, he acknowledged that the set may not have been the right venue. He also seemed to equate criticism of what he said to an attack on his free speech.
“It was a speech about free speech, believe it or not, and with that said, I just want to...

Comedian and “Kill Tony” podcast host Tony Hinchcliffe ignited a national firestorm with his appearance at Donald Trump’s Oct. 27 rally at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. While endorsing Trump for president via a comedy set, Hinchcliffe made a joke in which he referred to Puerto Rico as “a floating island of garbage.” Widespread backlash ensued, with prominent Hollywood figures such as Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez and Aubrey Plaza slamming Hinchcliffe for the racist joke.
Hinchcliffe has now debuted the latest episode of “Kill Tony,” which was recorded the night after his appearance at the Trump rally amid the height of backlash against him. He responded amid the joke controversy by admitting that perhaps a Trump rally was not the best venue for this comedy set, although Hinchcliffe was adamant that he will not apologize.

Saturday Night Live knew it had to address a new reality this weekend. After a series of shows this fall showcasing Maya Rudolph’s Kamala Harris, how would SNL pivot after the landslide re-election of Donald Trump? To the show’s credit, it didn’t wallow in maudlin self-pity as in 2016 when Kate McKinnon as Hilary Clinton wailed “Hallelujah.”
It also avoided another mistake of the past, sidestepping Alec Baldwin’s buffoonish impression that dominated the show’s cold opens for four years. Those shrill bits weren’t funny in real time, and they’ve aged even worse.
Instead, SNL opted for a new approach, opening the show with its most popular cast members pledging their fealty to Donald Trump. Considering that the man has “openly called for vengeance against his political enemies” and a partisan Supreme Court means there’s “nothing to protect the people who are brave enough to speak out against him,...

Donald Trump will be president again.
Far more dispiriting than what the election says about Trump is what his win says about the American body politic. We are a house divided on a fault line of decency. Trump’s venality, his bigotry and racism, his fondness for dictators, and his disregard for the truth were on flamboyant display for American voters — with his former top general even decrying Trump as “fascist to the core.”
Campaigning for the White House, Trump was a peacock with fetid feathers. And others flocked with...
