This Underrated Slasher Film That “Upends expectations” Is Now Streaming for Free
Image
If you dig a slasher film with a dose of retro energy and a smart setup, I have a recommendation that will likely be right up your alley. I’m talking about Founder’s Day, a sorely underrated film from the Bloomquist brothers (Erik and Carson Bloomquist). In my review of the film, I said, “Like She Came from the Woods did before it, Founders Day frequently upends expectations… It’s clear that the Brothers Bloomquist have a knack for subverting that which viewers are likely to anticipate.”

As you can probably tell from my enthusiastic endorsement, I had a fun time with Founder’s Day. Although the flick doesn’t quite rise to the level of the brothers’ previous film, She Came from the Woods, Founder’s Day is nonetheless an enjoyable slasher that pays homage to celebrated efforts like Scream.

The setup for this slasher goes like this:...

Midsummer Scream 2024: World’s Biggest Halloween Convention Hits Record Attendance
Image
Even battling the massive draw of San Diego Comic-Con, Midsummer Scream 2024 — the latest edition of the world’s biggest Halloween convention — had record attendance with well over 50,000 guests. Horror fans and fiends packed the Long Beach Convention Center in Southern California for three days (July 26-28) of pre-spooky season celebrations, including activations from Paramount, Universal, and Lionsgate, among others. That’s proof, coordinators say, not just of the loyal fanbase still making scary movies and haunts lucrative year-round, but also of the thriving professional community keeping the genre alive for film and TV workers facing extreme uncertainty within the industry.

“The horror community is an extremely supportive and inclusive community,” Norman Gidney, executive director of The Screaming Room Film Festival at Midsummer Scream, told IndieWire. “It’s not just a life raft in economic times. There’s a tremendous catharsis and emotional and mental support from horror and its people that we lay claim to.

‘Founders Day’ Review
Image
Stars: Olivia Nikkanen, Naomi Grace, Jayce Bartok, Devin Druid, Emilia McCarthy, Amy Hargreaves, Catherine Curtin | Written by Erik Bloomquist, Carson Bloomquist | Directed by Erik Bloomquist

The Bloomquist brothers, director Erik and co-writer Carson are back with their second film this year, following up their summer camp horror She Came from the Woods with Founders Day. Billed as a political slasher has an interesting history to it. The original concept dates back to 2011, and a script that was considered for inclusion in Project Greenlight. They even made a conceptual trailer for it before the project collapsed. And what better time to revive it than now in a time of political division and violence?

In the town of Fairwood, two things are fast approaching, its 300th anniversary and the election of its next mayor. The race is a contentious one, the first image we see is of a campaign sign being destroyed.

Devin Druid and Founders Day Director Erik Bloomquist Unpack Their Gavel-Killing Horror Comedy
Image
It was only a matter of time before somebody came out with a trippy, blood-soaked Tricentennial slasher movie with a masked killer in a white wig, toting a gavel for a weapon. And during an election year no less. There will be disorder in this court, and you will love it. Welcome to Founders Day, the offbeat horror comedy from Bloomquist Brothers Erik and Carson, the filmmakers who brought us She Came from the Woods and Night at the Eagle Inn through their Mainframe Pictures.

The daring political slasher revolves around the small town of Fairwood, which is shaken by a series of gruesome killings during a Founders Day weekend celebration prior to a pivotal mayoral election. Accusations abound, and the threat of a masked killer has everybody on edge as the residents rush to uncover the truth.

Erik Bloomquist directed the project, which he co-wrote with brother Carson. The...

Founders Day Review | One Big, Bloody, Gavel-Banging Romp
Image
Character exploration takes a backseat to the bloody kills and political comedy in Founders Day — perfect for slasher film fans craving a quick fix. The unique masked killer, wielding a secret knife hidden in a gavel, provides thrilling and well-executed horror moments. While the film suffers from some overacting and empty characters, it remains a hellishly fun thrill ride that entertains with its reckless ambition.

Don’t expect deep dives into character exploration in Founders Day. Leave the plunging to the masked killer stabbing people with a secret knife hidden in the gavel they’re using a weapon. It’s all part of frenetic events plaguing the small town of Fairwood in the latest masked slasher film, which foregoes heftier character motivations and keeps its bloody feet firmly planted in the horror comedy subgenre.

That’s not a bad thing if you’re a slasher film fan looking for a quick fix.

Founders Day Review: A Muddled Story & Flimsy Characters Bring Down Horror Film's Potential
Image
Founders Day's characters are one-dimensional and lack depth, making it difficult to connect with their motivations. The film's story is jumbled and tries to do too much, resulting in a bloated plot and a weak ending that fails to tie its threads. While the horror elements and kills are gruesome and engaging, other aspects of the film, such as dialogue and character development, fall short, preventing it from fully realizing its potential.

Horror can be a gateway to exploring pertinent topics — grief, politics, and mental illness are just a few that come to mind. Founders Day, directed by Erik Bloomquist from a screenplay by him and Carson Bloomquist, struggles to string its multiple story threads together. The dialogue is a bit wooden, and the flat small town politics should be more engaging than they actually are. The result is a horror film that has a lot of interesting ideas, but...

She Came From the Woods: Everything You Need to Know About the Slasher Film
Image
The horror genre is no stranger to films about summer camps where people invariably die in a variety of horrifying ways and the slasher subgenre of horror has regained popularity over the last decade. To add to the list, the indie filmmaker Erik Bloomquist has turned his 1980s slasher homage short film, She Came From The Woods, into a feature-length title with a script co-written with his brother Carson Bloomquist. She Came From The Woods uses the standard slasher clichés of the era in which it is set. They are used by the Bloomquists to either increase tension or completely defy expectations.

Watch the Trailer for She Came From The Woods
Image
In his Frightfest review, James Doherty wrote that She Came from the Woods is a "fun and entertaining campfire tale," and as someone who saw the movie as part of last year's Popcorn Frights Film Festival lineup, I can concur that the latest film from director Erik Bloomquist (Ten Minutes to Midnight) definitely scratches that summer camp slasher itch. Ahead of the film's February 10th theatrical release from Mainframe Pictures, the official trailer has now been released, giving viewers a look at the horrors unleashed at Camp Briarbrook, set fittingly to the tune of Kim Wilde's ’80s anthem "Kids in America."

Theatrical Release Date: February 10, 2023

Directed by: Erik Bloomquist

Written by: Erik Bloomquist, Carson Bloomquist

Produced by: Erik Bloomquist, Carson Bloomquist, Cara Buono, William Sadler, Adam Weppler

She Came from the Woods trailer: 80s-set summer camp horror film is coming to theatres
Image
Director Erik Bloomquist’s horror film She Came from the Woods is set to reach theatres on February 10th – tickets are already available for purchase at Regal, AMC, and Harkins – and to help you decide whether or not this is a movie you’d like to check out on the big screen, we have the trailer embedded above. The film stars Cara Buono of Stranger Things – and just like Stranger Things, She Came from the Woods is set in the 1980s. Buono also had a role in the Let the Right One In remake Let Me In, which was set in the ’80s as well. Genre projects keep taking her back to that decade.

Written by Erik Bloomquist and Carson Bloomquist, She Came from the Woods follows the staff of an overnight camp as they conjure an old legend on the last day of the summer of 1987.

Buono is joined...

Frightfest 2022: ‘She Came From the Woods’ Review
Image
Stars: Cara Buono, Clare Foley, Spencer List, William Sadler, Michael Park, Tyler Elliot Burke, William Sadler, Adam Weppler | Written by Erik Bloomquist, Carson Bloomquist | Directed by Erik Bloomquist

A mysterious figure terrorises a camp full of teenagers in She Came From the Woods, a supernatural horror from director Erik Bloomquist, who also co-wrote the script with his brother, Carson Bloomquist. Creepy, suspenseful and suitably gory, it’s a genre-savvy throwback to the summer camp slasher genre.

Set in 1987 (so no pesky mobile phones), the film takes place during the last night of the summer holiday at Camp Briarbrook, run by kindly Gilbert McAlister (William Sadler) his adult daughter Heather (Cara Buono) and her two teenage sons, irresponsible Peter (Spencer List) and sensible Shawn (Tyler Elliot Burke).

When Peter persuades the other teen volunteers to perform a ghost story ritual (a ridiculously simple one – prick your finger and shout “Agatha!”), he...

FrightFest 2022 Review: She Came From The Woods is a Fun and Entertaining Campfire Tale
Image
Many people have fond memories of summer camp – for some it’s making life-long friends, roasting smores and hanging out by the lake; for others it’s watching Friday the 13th, Sleepaway Camp or The Burning on TV with the curtains drawn. Yes, summer camp and the things that happen there hold a special place in the hearts of many. However, this isn’t the case for the counsellors of Briarbrook summer camp. The summer of 1987 is one they would want to forget.

She Came From the Woods tells the tale of a summer camp run by three generations of the McCaliister family. Patriarch, Gilbert (William Sadler) has been a part of the camp for decades but this summer could be his last. General running of the camp is left to his daughter, Heather (Cara Buono), whilst her sons also work on site.

After the closing show of the summer,...

‘Night at the Eagle Inn’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Amelia Dudley, Taylor Turner, Greg Schweers, Beau Minniear, Erik Bloomquist | Written by Erik Bloomquist, Carson Bloomquist | Directed by Erik Bloomquist

Night at the Eagle Inn is the latest film from Erik and Carson Bloomquist. We’ve been following these filmmakers since way back in 2015 and their first short film The Cobblestone Corridor. Since then they’ve released films like Long Lost and Ten Minutes to Midnight; and now the pair have one of the most anticipated films on last year’s festival circuit making its digital debut in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Since the only thing harder than making a hit film is making another one, the question is, can they keep their streak alive?

Sarah Moss and her twin brother Spencer (Taylor Turner; Lillith) are on a mission to solve a dark mystery from their past. They were born prematurely, their mother died during childbirth.
