If you dig a slasher film with a dose of retro energy and a smart setup, I have a recommendation that will likely be right up your alley. I’m talking about Founder’s Day, a sorely underrated film from the Bloomquist brothers (Erik and Carson Bloomquist). In my review of the film, I said, “Like She Came from the Woods did before it, Founders Day frequently upends expectations… It’s clear that the Brothers Bloomquist have a knack for subverting that which viewers are likely to anticipate.”

As you can probably tell from my enthusiastic endorsement, I had a fun time with Founder’s Day. Although the flick doesn’t quite rise to the level of the brothers’ previous film, She Came from the Woods, Founder’s Day is nonetheless an enjoyable slasher that pays homage to celebrated efforts like Scream.

Even battling the massive draw of San Diego Comic-Con, Midsummer Scream 2024 — the latest edition of the world’s biggest Halloween convention — had record attendance with well over 50,000 guests. Horror fans and fiends packed the Long Beach Convention Center in Southern California for three days (July 26-28) of pre-spooky season celebrations, including activations from Paramount, Universal, and Lionsgate, among others. That’s proof, coordinators say, not just of the loyal fanbase still making scary movies and haunts lucrative year-round, but also of the thriving professional community keeping the genre alive for film and TV workers facing extreme uncertainty within the industry.

The film's story is jumbled and tries to do too much, resulting in a bloated plot and a weak ending that fails to tie its threads. While the horror elements and kills are gruesome and engaging, other aspects of the film, such as dialogue and character development, fall short, preventing it from fully realizing its potential.

Horror can be a gateway to exploring pertinent topics — grief, politics, and mental illness are just a few that come to mind. Blue Finch Films has locked the North American sale for the Bloomquist brothers’ political slasher Founders Day after the American Film Festival that ran earlier this month. The film has been acquired by Dark Sky Films and will be theatrically released in the first-quarter of 2024. The deal was negotiated by Mike Chapman on behalf of Blue Finch Films and Giles Edwards, head of development and acquisitions for Dark Sky.

Joe Stephenson’s Doctor Jekyll starring Eddie Izzard will have its world premiere at the UK’s horror and fantasy film festival FrightFest (August 24-28) as the full line-up is unveiled.

Izzard will play Nina Jekyll, the infamous scientist with a dark alter-ego, in a modern adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s book by placing a woman in the titular role.

Doctor Jekyll is one of 25 world premieres screening at the festival, which takes place at Cineworld Leicester Square in London.

FrightFest, the UK’s biggest, best and most beloved community-driven horror & fantasy film festival, returns in a blaze of gory glory to the Cineworld Leicester Square, London, for its 24th edition, a press release announced this morning.

“Running from Thursday August 24 – Monday 28 August, Pigeon Shrine FrightFest is a joyful big screen celebration of genre cinema, offering a carnival of carnage, a smorgasbord of shock and a tableau of terror. This year, over five days, audiences can explore the magic of menace, mayhem and mischief with seventy films programmed across four screens. There are twenty-five world, twenty-three International / European and twelve UK premieres, with fourteen countries represented, spanning five continents.

The horror genre is no stranger to films about summer camps where people invariably die in a variety of horrifying ways and the slasher subgenre of horror has regained popularity over the last decade. To add to the list, the indie filmmaker Erik Bloomquist has turned his 1980s slasher homage short film, She Came From The Woods, into a feature-length title with a script co-written with his brother Carson Bloomquist. She Came From The Woods uses the standard slasher clichés of the era in which it is set. They are used by the Bloomquists to either increase tension or completely defy expectations.

In his Frightfest review, James Doherty wrote that She Came from the Woods is a "fun and entertaining campfire tale," and as someone who saw the movie as part of last year's Popcorn Frights Film Festival lineup, I can concur that the latest film from director Erik Bloomquist (Ten Minutes to Midnight) definitely scratches that summer camp slasher itch. Ahead of the film's February 10th theatrical release from Mainframe Pictures, the official trailer has now been released, giving viewers a look at the horrors unleashed at Camp Briarbrook, set fittingly to the tune of Kim Wilde's ’80s anthem "Kids in America."

Director Erik Bloomquist’s horror film She Came from the Woods is set to reach theatres on February 10th – tickets are already available for purchase at Regal, AMC, and Harkins – and to help you decide whether or not this is a movie you’d like to check out on the big screen, we have the trailer embedded above. The film stars Cara Buono of Stranger Things – and just like Stranger Things, She Came from the Woods is set in the 1980s. Buono also had a role in the Let the Right One In remake Let Me In, which was set in the ’80s as well. Genre projects keep taking her back to that decade.

Holiday-themed slashers will always grab hold of our attention, and Deadline is reporting on an upcoming new one titled Founders Day that just wrapped filming in Connecticut.

Erik Bloomquist directed Founders Day for Mainframe Pictures, expected in 2023.

Deadline reports, “Founders Day is a contemporary murder mystery set in the midst of a heated mayoral election on the eve of a quaint New England town’s tricentennial.”

Erik Bloomquist wrote the script with brother Carson Bloomquist.

A mysterious figure terrorises a camp full of teenagers in She Came From the Woods, a supernatural horror from director Erik Bloomquist, who also co-wrote the script with his brother, Carson Bloomquist.
