Bad Actor: A Hollywood Ponzi Scheme Review – Peeling Back the Layers of Deception
Image
Zach Horwitz had spent years crafting an image, telling just the right lies and showing just the right papers to make people believe in his success. As an actor in Los Angeles going by the stage name Zach Avery, he convinced investors he had struck gold by licensing indie films to streaming giants. But it was all an illusion—his company 1inMM took in over $650 million without ever making a legitimate deal.

Bad Actor: A Hollywood Ponzi Scheme shines a light on just how Horwitz/Avery, as he’s known, managed to fool so many for so long. Director David Darg takes a close look at Zach’s background and unpacks the intricate web of falsehoods he spun. Through interviews with victims and recreations starring Hollywood talent, it reveals the mechanics of the scheme and its impact on people’s lives.

Yet Bad Actor does more than just recount criminal facts.

Former U.S. Green Beret Jordan Goudreau Is the Subject of Upcoming Neon Documentary (Exclusive)
Image
Former U.S. Green Beret Jordan Goudreau, who was arrested on July 31 in connection to his failed 2020 coup to remove Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, is the subject of Neon’s latest documentary “Men of War.”

Directed by Billy Corben (“God Forbid”) and Jen Gatien (“Limelight”) “Men of War” follows Goudreau, who, according to the film’s logline “finds himself in over his head and on the run after mounting the failed Venezuela coup and being chased by the American government who he spent his life fighting for.”

Goudreau, a former Special Forces soldier who served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, planned to land in Venezuela via speedboat with approximately 60 other men in an attempt to capture Maduro, an authoritarian president. At the time, Goudreau said that he and his team were acting to protect Venezuela’s democracy after Maduro’s 2018 re-election, which was boycotted by the opposition and condemned as undemocratic by the U.

‘Bad Actor: A Hollywood Ponzi Scheme’ Review: A Dull Documentary About a Fascinating Showbiz Grifter
Image
“Bad Actor: A Hollywood Ponzi Scheme” centers on an immensely interesting subject — financial fraudster and D-List actor Zach Horwitz, a.k.a. Zach Avery — but ends up telling his tale in uninteresting ways. The film draws its various techniques from far better and more accomplished documentaries, resulting in a multifaceted, mixed-bag approach that never clicks, thanks in large part to how the movie chooses to reveal information.

Director Joslyn Jensen appears on-screen early into the runtime and becomes a primary character in the film. She’s as much a subject as Avery and his various victims — people he befriended over the years and scammed out of millions of dollars. But Jensen is also a deeply uninteresting focal point who takes up far too much of the screentime. By centering her to the degree that it does, “Bad Actor” becomes a film about process on multiple fronts.

On one hand, the...

How ‘Bad Actor’ Documentary Unpacked a Notorious Hollywood Ponzi Scheme While Pulling Off Its Own Deception
Image
Spoiler Warning: This story contains plot details from “Bad Actor: A Hollywood Ponzi Scheme,” which premiered Thursday at Tribeca Festival.

Just how easy is it to get duped?

It’s the central question of “Bad Actor: A Hollywood Ponzi Scheme,” a documentary that premieres this week at Tribeca Festival and details aspiring movie star Zach Avery (aka Horwitz) who defrauded investors of out $227 million and pulled off the entertainment industry’s biggest Ponzi scheme. Nobody ever believes they’d be the ones dumb enough to ignore the red flags and fall prey to such a hoax. So then how exactly did Horwitz, a D-list actor with no notable credits, deceive so many people? Director Joslyn Jensen, who appears throughout the film while interviewing law enforcement, scam victims and people who know Horwitz, ultimately discovered it’s way easier than you’d think to get tricked.

After all, she didn’t actually direct the film.

10 Movies We’re Excited to See at Tribeca Festival
Image
Tribeca Festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal doesn’t follow a North Star as she and her team sift through tens of thousands of submissions each year. But as they whittle down those applicants to the 100 or so films comprising the final lineup, themes tend to emerge.

“It’s not like we set out to say, ‘This is what we want to do.’ As an activist film festival, we always look for [political] films,” says Rosenthal, who created Tribeca Festival with Robert De Niro in the wake of 9/11. “This year, there’s a mental health narrative. I don’t know if that’s a post-covid thing.”

Tribeca, now in its 23rd year, will take place from June 5-16 and highlight films led by Kristen Stewart, Lily Gladstone and Jenna Ortega. “Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge,” a look at the fashion icon and entrepreneur, will open the festival, with anticipated documentaries about Prince,...

Amazon MGM Acquires Documentary ‘Hollywood Ending’ On Actor Turned Ponzi Schemer Zachary Horwitz
Image
Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios has acquired Hollywood Ending, a new documentary from UnTypical, a Vice Studios Group company, and Library Films. Directed by Rebecca Chaiklin (Tiger King), the film follows the downfall of Zach Horwitz, the charismatic “midwestern, millennial Madoff” who ran a $690M Ponzi scheme under the noses of those closest to him.

Also known by his stage name Zach Avery, Horwitz is a former actor who deceived investors by falsely claiming to have lucrative licensing deals with such prominent streaming platforms as Netflix and HBO. His scheme began around 2014 when he started soliciting funds from investors, promising high returns from licensing deals for movies. Horwitz operated through his company, 1inMM Capital LLC, which he presented as successful in film distribution. To maintain the illusion of legitimacy, he provided investors with fake documents, including fabricated licensing agreements and emails purportedly from entertainment executives.

Using the funds from new investors,...

Man who ran $650m Hollywood ponzi scheme sentenced to 20 years
Image
Convicted fraudster ordered to repay around $230m to investors.

A man who has played small roles in Hollywood films has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for running a Ponzi scheme that duped investors out of $650m.

The prosecution said Zachary Horwitz obtained loans for his company 1inMM Capital from 2014-2019 by claiming he was raising funds to buy film rights that would then be licensed to streamers like Netflix and HBO.

In fact the money was never used to acquire rights and instead was used to support a lifestyle that was more becoming of legitimate Hollywood stars and filmmakers...

Actor Who Pleaded Guilty In Hollywood Film Licensing Ponzi Scheme Gets 20-Year Sentence
Image
Updated with sentencing: Zachary Horwitz, the Hollywood actor who pleaded guilty last fall for operating a Ponzi scheme that bilked $650 million from investors who thought their money would be used to acquire licensing rights to films, was sentenced to 20 years in prison Monday.

U.S. District Judge Mark C. Scarsi also also ordered Horwitz to pay $230,361,884 in restitution to his victims. Horowitz, whose screen name was Zach Avery, pleaded guilty in October to one count of securities fraud after his arrest in April 2021.

His scheme went on for more than five years, with Horowitz raising millions of dollars from investors — some personal friends– by telling them their money would be used by his company, 1inMM Capital, to acquire film distribution rights in foreign territories, which then would be licensed to online platforms like Netflix and HBO. None of that ever actually happened, with the documents faked and the money instead...

The Gateway review – if Dirty Harry worked for social services
Michele Civetta
A hard-boozing caseworker grimaces his way around St Louis in Michele Civetta’s overblown urban thriller

Not quite credible enough to stand up as a gritty, 70s-esque social drama, and lacking the focus of the Training Day-style urban thriller it’s marketed as, Michele Civetta’s second feature is an awkward but passably entertaining blend of both. The Gateway is the nickname for the Missouri city of St Louis, rough terrain shepherded by seen-it-all social worker Parker (a lead role for blockbuster fringe player Shea Whigham). Sipping Jameson miniatures as he does his rounds, he becomes particularly concerned about Dahlia (Olivia Munn) and Ashley (Taegen Burns), after the latter’s dad Mike (Zach Avery) is released from prison.

Civetta, who also co-wrote, is not one for understatement. Not only is Parker a hard-boozing caseworker, he’s also an orphan (abandoned by Bruce Dern’s jazz-trumpeter dad) as well as a former prizefighting champ.

‘The Gateway’ Review

Stars: Shea Whigham, Olivia Munn, Taryn Manning, Frank Grillo, Bruce Dern, Keith David, Mark Boone Junior, Zach Avery, Alexander Wraith, Jay Hieron, Taegen Burns, Nick Daly, Richard Strauss, Shannon Adawn | Written by Michele Civetta, Andrew Levitas, Alex Felix Bendaña | Directed by Michele Civetta

I have been known from time to time watch a flick based solely on its cast. Take Sam Rockwell for instance, the trailer could be awful but I’m still going to watch it because it’s Sam ‘freaking’ Rockwell. Recently Frank Grillo has made his way onto this list after a string of spot on supporting roles and the odd leading man performance… So you can imagine my giddy glee to see the man teaming up with The Newsroom‘s Olivia Munn for an “action thriller” romp. The movie is called The Gateway and I’m about to get into it for you all right now!

‘The Gateway’ Review: A Two-Fisted Social Worker Fights Off Organized Crime
Image
Set in St. Louis but shot in coastal Virginia, attempting to wrestle tough sociopolitical issues while sporting the neon hues of a stylized neo-noir, “The Gateway” lets itself get pulled in too many directions for any of them to be well-realized. Nonetheless, this crime melodrama represents an advance for commercials and music video director Michele Civetta over his first feature, the occult muddle “Agony,” with improved control over performances and pacing. The implausible but diverting Lionsgate release is launching in limited theaters, on demand and digital Sept. 3, with disc formats following a week later.

Raised in a foster home after his mother’s fatal Od and his father’s abandonment, Parker Jode (Shea Whigham) is a still-punchy former pro fighter who now tries repairing other people’s families as a state social worker. In that role, he’s developed a paternal interest in young Ashley (Taegen Burns), even driving her...

Actor Zachary Horwitz Arrested For Film Rights Ponzi Scheme
Image
On Tuesday, actor Zachary Horwitz (known professionally as Zach Avery) was arrested on charges of wire fraud, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

The FBI and SEC allege that Horwitz ran a Ponzi scheme through his company, 1inMM, which defrauded investors of $227 million.

Allegedly, Horwitz told investors that his company invested in film rights, subsequently reselling these rights to distributors like Netflix and HBO. He is said to have sold people on his scheme by showing them fake licensing and distribution agreements, featuring forged signatures. Ultimately, however, both of the above companies confirmed to the FBI that they’d never conducted business with 1nMM.

It is believed that Horwitz began receiving funds as part of the Ponzi scheme in 2015, using them to purchase a $6 million home in the Beverlywood neighborhood of Los Angeles, while repaying earlier investors.

Horwitz’s credits as an actor include low-budget features such as Trespassers and The Devil Below.

Actor Arrested for Running Film Investment Ponzi Scheme
Image
Actor and movie investor Zachary Horwitz, who is sometimes credited as Zach Avery, was arrested Tuesday on charges that he ran a Ponzi scheme that swindled investors out of $227 million.

Horwitz, 34, was taken into custody by special agents with the FBI, the U.S. Attorney’s Office reported. Horwitz claimed investors’ money would be used for buying rights to films that HBO and Netflix had signed on to distribute internationally, particularly in Latin America.

Horwitz appeared Tuesday in United States District Court on a charge of wire fraud, which carries a statutory maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

The complaint alleges that Horwitz solicited investors for his company 1inMM Capital LLC, saying he would purchase the regional distribution rights to films and then license the rights to platforms including Netflix and HBO. His promotional materials claimed the company offered “safe” investments because “we receive confirmation from each of our outputs...

‘You’re Not Alone’ DVD Review

Stars: Katia Winter, Leya Catlett, Zach Avery, Emmy James, Lane Bradbury, Richard Bekins, Jerry Dixon, Marceline Hugot, Patrick Hamilton | Written by Andrew Wong | Directed by Eduardo Rodriguez

Director Eduardo Rodriguez has been, at least for me, something of a underrated talent. His first Hollywood movie, Stash House, was an effective action thriller and his follow-up, El Gringo, was a superb film and star-making vehicle for action star Scott Adkins. And – at least for me – his Fright Night sequel-c0me-remake was a decent entry in the franchise and one that I enjoyed more than the Colin Farrell iteration. So when I discovered his latest feature film, You’re Not Alone, was due out this week – after apparently being filmed in 2016 under the title Unwanted – I knew I had to check it out… And I’m glad I did.

You’re Not Alone tells the story of Emma (Katia Winter) who, after the premature death of her estranged husband,...

Last Moment of Clarity review – neo-noir in double trouble
 Brian Cox: June 1
This identity thriller suffers from overreliance on coincidences and perplexing cameos from Brian Cox and Udo Kier

Brothers Colin and James Krisel and/or actor Zach Avery must be either very well financed or ridiculously persuasive because they’ve managed to pull together a supporting cast and budget for this debut thriller that far exceeds what the script seems to warrant. At heart, Last Moment of Clarity is a slight, imaginatively thin B-movie which doesn’t so much as allude to Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window and Vertigo as outright steal from them brazenly, ending up with a limp neo-noir that unfolds in the streets of Paris and classy apartments in Los Angeles. There are cameos from Brian Cox and Udo Kier, both great scene-stealing actors with many virtues other than accent mimicry, judging by the bizarre Scots-French mashup Cox tries out here that is only a hair’s breadth...

Will Patton in Gritty Coal Mine Monster Movie 'The Devil Below' Trailer
Jonathan Sadowski and Devin Kelley in Chroniques de Tchernobyl (2012)
"It took my son, and I've been fighting him ever since." Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for The Devil Below, a new horror film (formerly titled Shookum Hills) from filmmaker / VFX supervisor Brad Parker (director of the very creepy Chernobyl Diaries previously). A geological expedition to an Appalachian sinkhole becomes a fight for survival against a mysterious force. When a team of researchers try to find out how fires started in underground coal mines that have been ablaze for decades, they encounter something much more frightening hiding within. The film stars Alicia Sanz, Adan Canto, Zach Avery, Chinaza Uche, Jesse Latourette, Jonathan Sadowski, and Will Patton. The best part about this is definitely the grizzled Will Patton. It looks a bit like Tremors meets The Descent, which is kind of a thrilling mash-up. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Brad Parker's The Devil Below, direct from Vertical's YouTube...

Johnny Depp and Minami in Minamata (2020)
Johnny Depp Drama ‘Minamata’ Acquired By MGM; February 5 Release Set
Johnny Depp and Minami in Minamata (2020)
Exclusive: MGM has acquired the Johnny Depp-starrer Minamata, through its American International Pictures label. The Andrew Levitas-directed drama has been set for a February 5 release, dropping into the extended awards season as a theatrical and day and date PVOD release. The film made its world premiere during the Berlin International Film Festival last February. In addition to U.S. rights, MGM acquired Canada, Germany and Switzerland.

While the recent focus on Depp has come for all the wrong reasons in a libel case he pressed against the Rupert Murdoch British tabloid The Sun for calling him a “wife beater” (a court ruling is expected Monday), this is a chance for the focus to swing back to his chameleonic screen work.

In a drama inspired by a true story, Depp plays Eugene Smith, a famed photojournalist who has disconnected from the world but takes a final assignment from his...

Interview: Director Orson Oblowitz on the Challenges and Lessons He Learned While Making Trespassers
Set to hit theaters in Los Angeles and New York tomorrow is Orson Oblowitz’s home invasion thriller Trespassers, which stars Angela Trimbur and Fairuza Balk (two of this writer’s favorite actresses), as well as Zach Avery, Janel Parrish,g and Jonathan Howard. The story follows two couples who Airbnb a house in the middle of the desert for a weekend to try to work out their respective issues, but things go horribly awry once they find themselves in a fight for their lives.

Daily Dead recently chatted with Trespassers director Orson Oblowitz about his initial interest in taking on the project, as well as the casting process, the challenges of creating the film’s visual style, how working on the project transformed him as an artist, and more.

Look for Trespassers in both La and NYC this weekend, and for those of you in other cities around the country,...

Orson Oblowitz
Film Review: ‘Trespassers’
Orson Oblowitz
A weekend getaway goes sour even before the corpses start accruing in “Trespassers,” a good-looking indie thriller that’s diverting, but could have used another script draft or two. Depicting two quarrelsome if hard-bodied couples who find themselves in deep peril at a rented desert home, Orson Oblowitz’s film has a leisurely enough buildup that room should have been made for more fully developed characters. Fine-tuning the pileup of eventual violent crises wouldn’t have hurt, either. The result falls short of being especially credible, let alone memorable. Still, this is a polished genre exercise that provides a decent night’s home entertainment. IFC Midnight is opening it July 12 on screens in New York and Los Angeles, simultaneous with its launch on demand.

A brief prelude leaves us no doubt that the owners of a handsome modernist manse in the Mohave meet a very bad end at the hands of three masked,...

‘Trespassers’ Review: Fear-Mongering Horror for a Fox News Audience
The film opens on an affluent white couple living close enough to the Mexican border for another character to later say, “You can’t open the door to strangers in today’s society.” They’re awoken by three men in masks made to look like Ms-13 gang members, dragged out, and put in the trunk of a car before being shot dead by the side of the road. The Maga allusions are therefore present from the start with pretty Malibu types falling victim to violent “cholos” for what appears to be no other reason besides the bloodlust Fox News’ fear-mongering editorials have told conservative Boomers is coming if they don’t remain vigilant. We eventually discover they’re actually after a photograph, but that’s just an excuse to let these racist stereotypes shine.

I say this because writer Corey Deshon and director Orson Oblowitz never provide a motive beyond terror in Trespassers.

Official Trailer for Orson Oblowitz's Home Invasion Horror 'Trespassers'
"Sometimes you just can't stop what's coming..." IFC Midnight has released an official trailer for an indie horror film titled Trespassers, the latest from filmmaker Orson Oblowitz (The Queen of Hollywood Blvd). The home invasion horror premiered at FrightFest London last year, and also played in Germany's Fantasy Filmfest. Two couples rent a modern luxury desert home for the weekend hoping to sort out their messed-up lives. Just as they are about to settle in, a woman shows up at their door. And that's when the murderous trouble really starts. Because without knowing it, these four friends have just landed slap-bang in the wrong violent place at precisely the wrong bloody time. Starring Angela Trimbur, Zach Avery, Janel Parrish, Jonathan Howard, Fairuza Balk, Carlo Rota, Sebastian Sozzi, and Joey Abril. This seems so much like a been-there, done-that horror rehash pulling from You're Next and everything else we've already seen.
