Berlin Hot List: Art House Takes Back Seat to Commercial Action and Horror at Berlin Market
Image
Big names, high concepts, and crowd-pleasing thrills are the order of the day at this year’s European Film Market, where commercial fare is dominating over the usual arthouse prestige plays, reflecting an industry uncertain of the future of the theatrical business in the post-covid world. Action, horror, and comedy are leading the charge, with star-driven projects like Guy Ritchie’s Wife & Dog (Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike), Mary Bronstein’s If I Had Legs I’d Kick You (Rose Byrne, Conan O’Brien, A$AP Rocky), and Ernest Dickerson’s untitled hitman thriller (Samuel L. Jackson, Daveed Diggs) among the titles generating early buzz.

Genre filmmakers are also stepping up in a big way, with The Raid’s Iko Uwais launching a new production/sales outfit in Berlin for his brand of martial-arts madness, and horror entries like Bad Boy — starring Ke Huy Quan and Lili Reinhart — and the body-horror thriller...

The Best Sci-Fi Movies Streaming In October 2022 And Where To Find Them
Image
With fall well underway and spooky season rearing its haunted head, now is the perfect time to curl up on the couch with a good movie. While horror typically reigns supreme this time of year, there are still plenty of incredible films well worth your precious viewing minutes, especially from the science fiction genre.

Regardless of how much we love heavy hitters like the "Star Wars," "Star Trek," and "Alien" franchises, sci-fi films encapsulate far more than just stories set in space. Time travel, neo-futurism, artificial intelligence, and other forms of speculative fiction all birth some of the most fascinating stories ever put to film. Fortunately for those looking to broaden their sci-fi horizons, the streaming offerings this October have a world of options. Here are five of the best sci-fi films available to stream this October, and where to watch them.

Trailer For a No Budget Amblin-Inspired Sci-Fi Film Called Cosmos
I’ve got a trailer here for a solid looking indie sci-fi film called Cosmos. This movie comes from directing brothers Elliot Weaver and Zander Weaver and they made it over the course of five year with no budget.

I’m inspired by passionate filmmakers like this, who actually went out and made a movie and didn’t let any of the limitations and struggles stop them. These are the same filmmakers of the short film The Mysterious Disappearance of M.M. Bayliss that we shared years ago.

The film was inspired the the Amblin-era adventures, and the story takes place over the course of one night against the backdrop of a World changing discovery. Cosmos is said to offer “spectacle and thrills but reminds us success is nothing without people to share it with.”

Here’s the synopsis:

Three amateur astronomers accidentally intercept what they believe is a signal from an alien civilisation.

Twilight Zone Inspired Short - The Mysterious Disappearance Of M.M. Bayliss
Elliot and Zander Weaver directed this awesome horror thriller called "The Mysterious Disappearance of M.M. Bayliss." The short film was inspired by classic Victorian ghost stories and the brilliant tales from the 1960s TV series The Twilight Zone.

A young man is woken one night by a set of haunted keys that float before him. Guided through his empty house by the possessed keys, he discovers a dark room hiding an even darker secret.

On of the cool things about the making of this film is the fact that is was shot on 800ft of 16mm Fuji-film to "achieve the distinct and unique aesthetic audiences associate with the classic ghost films of the past." I'm such a huge fan of this type of movie, and this short perfectly emulates that tone and feel. Thanks to the directors for sending this in to us. I loved it!
