Lena Headey & Robin Tunney Set For Dark Comedy ‘Divine Blood’
Image
Exclusive: Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) and Robin Tunney (The Mentalist) are set to star in Divine Blood, an indie dark comedy marking the feature directorial debut of husband-and-wife duo Paul Castro Jr. and Aly Miller.

In the film from Lynx Point Pictures, which just wrapped filming in New York, Headey plays Ruth George, a once-revered “menstrual artist”, whose work — crafted from her own blood — catapulted her to cult fame. But just as she’s dragged back into the spotlight, her body begins to stage a quiet, sticky rebellion into a raw, absurd, and disturbingly relatable reckoning with art, womanhood, and the sheer chaos of being human.

Tunney plays Ruth’s sister, Scarlet. Others in the cast include Chloë Levine (The Oa), Kyra Weeks (The Wedding in the Hamptons), and Revon Yousif (The Better Sister). Miller penned the script and Mia Cusamano handled casting.

Dragon Ball Daima Unveils New Cast, Bringing Surprising Stars to the Anime
Image
The official English cast for Dragon Ball Daima has finally been revealed. Ever since Dragon Ball Daima was first announced, a major question has been who would voice the characters. Naturally, the new characters would all need voice actors, but with all the returning characters being turned into children, that invited the possibility of a new cast replacing the old ones, despite their years of history with the franchise.

For Dragon Ball Daimas Japanese dub, theres a new cast of voice actors for both the new characters and the (Mini) versions of the old ones, save for Goku (Mini), who is still voiced by Masako Nozawa. For the English dub, with the first three episodes currently playing in theaters, most of the principal English voice cast for Dragon Ball Daima has finally been revealed ahead of its official release. Naturally, most of the cast is new to Dragon Ball and voice acting,...

When Cool Girl Meets Final Girl: Hunter Schafer Is the New Face of Modern Horror
Image
“Cool” is one of those nebulous descriptors that defies classification. A cool girl could be anyone from an irreverent teen ditching class under the bleachers to a popular trend-setter rocking the latest style, a tik tok master with millions of followers or – like Gillian Flynn’s Amy Dunne – a woman consumed with attracting a man. This ever-evolving status can be difficult to pin down, but we all know a cool girl when we see her. Hunter Schafer is that girl; a celebrated actress currently reinventing the idea of “cool” for a new generation. With her latest role in Tilman Singer’s Cuckoo, Schafer brings this edgy energy to another classic female archetype. In her first starring role, Schafer takes on the final girl trope and embodies the female empowerment of legendary heroines while maintaining her own effortless allure. With an electric performance in this uniquely terrifying film, Schafer breaks the...

10 Best Shonen Anime Movies
Image
Shonen anime movies encompass some of the best works in the medium, providing writers and animators creative avenues. Notable shonen anime movies like The First Slam Dunk, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, and Persona 3 subvert common stigmas in the industry. Some of the most exhilarating examples of shonen films include Gurren Lagann's second film, enhancing the anime's finale, and One Piece Film: Red showcasing top-tier writing, and masterclass films like The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Of all the different demographics seen in anime, shonen anime is often regarded as being the most popular. Even during the early days of anime, shonen anime, whether they be original projects or adaptations or original works, has always received mainstream attention from fans.

Anime that fall under the shonen demographic are undoubtedly the most prolific, and that remains true for movies, as well. Just as there have been many shonen anime series over the decades, there...

10 Best Anime Movies Of All Time, Ranked
Image
Anime movies have become increasingly popular and receive just as much praise and attention as TV shows, if not more. The best anime movies can be part of a franchise or stand-alone stories, and both can be equally excellent. Anime movies like "Akira," "Ghost in the Shell," and "Perfect Blue" are considered iconic and have had a significant impact on the medium and even on Western films.

Anime has never been limited to just TV shows, with the best anime movies standing out as some of the finest films ever made. That idea has become even more apparent in recent years as anime movies make their way to theaters and streaming in greater and greater frequency, and as such, they tend to receive just as much praise and attention as TV shows, if not more so.

Anime movies have long since established themselves as an essential part of the medium,...

Cartoon Contenders: Details on the Nearly Three Dozen Animated Features Vying for Oscar
Image
Every few years, the Academy tweaks the rules for its animated feature category, with the net result that the nominees tend to skew ever more mainstream. That makes it tough for most of this year’s hopefuls: A record-setting number of animated features submitted. Those who pick the noms are required to watch roughly a third before ranking their top five, which can include additional titles they might have seen on their own. Blockbusters naturally benefit, though “Flee” and “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” earned nominations in 2022 and 2023, respectively, suggesting that artful indies still stand a chance.

The Boy and the Heron

Director: Hayao Miyazaki

Voices: Luca Padovan, Robert Pattinson

Studio: Studio Ghibli

Distributor: GKids

Rumors of Miyazaki’s retirement were greatly exaggerated, as the unstoppable creative force (who won an Oscar for “Spirited Away” in 2003) returns with a story inspired by his childhood memories during wartime. More fanciful than “The Wind Rises,...

In Praise Of The Cast Of Belle, And Good Anime Dubbing
Image
"Beauty and the Beast" truly is a tale as old as time, and has been retold in countless ways, like the Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton TV series of the same name, the Fran Drescher comedy "The Beautician and the Beast," the teen rom-drama "Beastly," or even in an episode of "Hello Kitty's Furry Tale Theater." Recently, legendary Japanese filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda delivered "Belle," a magnificent animated sci-fi fantasy film that thrusts the tale out of the world of old and into the techno future.

The story takes place in the not-so-distant future where the internet has evolved into a legitimate virtual reality called U, where avatars are created by users' scanned biometric information. A teenager named Suzu creates an avatar named Belle who becomes a pop superstar, but everything changes when her virtual concert is interrupted by the seemingly undefeatable fighter The Dragon (or "The Beast"), who she quickly becomes infatuated with.

Belle Limited Edition 4K Boxset Review
Image
The Film

The new Miyazaki. That’s a description I’ve heard applied to Mamoru Hosoda over and over, and it’s never sat well with me. Notwithstanding that Hosoda has expressed critical feelings about Miyazaki’s depiction of women, or my own apathy about Miyazaki’s films, Hosoda isn’t the new anybody, nor does he need to be. He’s the first Mamoru Hosoda, and across his six solo features, he’s established a strong authorial voice and, for my money, stands out as one of the best and most exciting filmmakers working today, and not just in animation.

Belle, like Hosoda’s previous films, takes a gigantic sci-fi concept and boils it down to a tiny personal story. The setting is contemporary, but the internet seems to be dominated by an app called U, a social network which, through body sharing technology (think a less gross take...

On-Air Film Review: Internet Beauty & the Cyber-Beast in ‘Belle’
Image
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on January 13th, 2022, reviewing a new animated film from Japan, a version of “Beauty & the Beast” entitled “Belle,” in theaters on January 14th.

Rating: 4.5/5.0

Written and directed by Mamoru Hosoda (“Mirai”), a young Japanese girl named Suzu has lost her mother at a young age, and hasn’t gotten over it. She is an awkward teenager who decides to enter the U, an online virtual world in which your brainwaves are transformed into characters, in essence starting over in a new life. She becomes Belle, a beautiful singer sensation in the U world, who falls in love with the Dragon, a beastly type who is out to destroy the U.

“Belle” opens in theaters and IMAX (in select markets) on January 14th. Featuring the voices (English dub) Kylie McNeill, Paul Castro Jr., Ben Lepley,...

Review: Jemaine Clement, Regina Hall lift sitcom-y 'People, Places, Things'
Park City. Jim Strouse's "People, Places, Things" plays like an 86 minute pilot for an HBO comedy series and even in this age of "TV and Movies Have Achieved Parity," I doubt that's what anybody wants to hear. But if you know me, you know I mean it largely as a compliment.  And what does that mean? Well, not too much happens in "People, Places, Things." It's a low-incident narrative that's supposed to be about emotional truth mixed with humor, but a lot of the comedic beats are being played rather broadly.  It feels as if the basic plot elements and, particularly, characters are in place at the end of the film for an ongoing storyline that might be amusing. Give me this cast and some of these characters on a weekly basis for 10 or 13 half-hour episodes per season and I could grow to really like them. And speaking of growth,...
