There hasn’t been any shortage of music documentaries on big screens lately, but most are presented as special events that come in and out for one or two nights on a weekend, without settling in for a regular run. The Sony Classics release “Becoming Led Zeppelin,” though, has defied expectations of what a modern rock doc can do in cinemas, on its way to finding the favor of fans as a home video hit, too. Its success is, well, highly becoming.

Director Bernard MacMahon sat down with Variety to talk about the long process of making and then finding a buyer for the film, admitting there were plenty of companies that turned it down. January and February usually aren’t the most stacked for box office performance, but there are normally some underrated hits that shine through the cracks and earn more than expected. One of the biggest surprises at the start of the year has been Becoming Led Zeppelin, the documentary detailing the rise to stardom of the classic band. Becoming Led Zeppelin earned another $740,000 during its fourth full weekend in theaters, which was enough to push the film past the $10 million global mark. Most of Becoming Led Zeppelin’s box office earnings have come from domestic markets, where it has earned $8.6 million, but it has also added $1.5 million internationally to help it reach its new total. The film was written and directed by Bernard MacMahon with Allison McGourty also earning a writing credit.

From the start, director Bernard MacMahon and writer and producer Allison McGourty knew there would be obstacles involved in making a documentary about Led Zeppelin, especially one done with the band’s cooperation. This is a group that has famously and diligently guarded its legacy, always maintaining a sense of mystique and rebuffing many earlier pitches for a movie like that. “Our sense was that there was absolutely no intention of ever doing a Zeppelin film,” MacMahon says.

Rock band Led Zeppelin have had several forays into film over the years. While The Beatles had huge success with films like A Hard Day’s Night and Help!, and Slade starred in the brilliant Slade In Flame, which is a criminally overlooked film and well worth tracking down, Zeppelin made The Song Remains The Same, which was half concert footage and half surreal fantasy sequences.

Eighteen projects have been awarded a total of £931,656 from the UK Global Screen Fund (Ukgsf) through its international coproduction and international distribution financing strands.

Altitude has boarded as international sales agent an as-yet-untitled Led Zeppelin feature documentary, directed by Bernard MacMahon, best-known for “American Epic.” CAA will represent the U.S. rights. The film will be shopped at Cannes.

The release of the doc, now in post-production, will coincide with the band’s 50th anniversary. It traces the journeys of the four members through the music scene of the 1960s, their meeting in the summer of 1968, and culminates in 1970 when their second album knocks the Beatles off the top of the charts.

It includes new interviews with Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones, as well as rare archival interviews with the late John Bonham. It is the first time the band has participated in a documentary since it was formed.

The film features never-before-seen archive film and photographs, state-of-the-art audio transfers of the band’s music and the music of other artists who shaped their sound.

Hammer of the Docs? Led Zeppelin is getting the feature doc treatment from the team behind American Epic.

The as-yet-untitled film, which is currently in post-production, comes after the band’s fiftieth anniversary last year. The doc, directed by Bernard MacMahon, will launch in Cannes with CAA representing the U.S. rights and Altitude handling international sales.

The film will trace the journeys of the four members of the Stairway To Heaven rockers through the music scene of the 1960s and their meeting in the summer of 1968, culminating in 1970 when Led Zeppelin II, with “Whole Lotta Love,” knocked The Beatles off the top of the charts and launched the career of what would become the biggest band in the world.

BAFTA La is expanding its longstanding Newcomers Program for Brit arrivals in the city to include talent and industry professionals from international territories.

In its first year of expansion the support program will welcome professionals from Poland, South Africa, Australia, Israel, Korea, France, Turkey and Hong Kong. A full list of participants can be found below.

Each participant receives access to BAFTA membership events and initiatives aimed at supporting career development and the transition to living and working in the U.S.

This year’s 55 participants include 19 actors, 15 directors, nine producers, three screenwriters, two art directors, two executives, two composers, one cinematographer, one production designer, one agent and one publicist.

Netflix and BBC1 dramas to face off in four categories.

Netflix’s The Crown and BBC1’s Taboo are to go head-to-head in four categories at this year’s Bafta TV Craft Awards.

Left Bank Pictures’ royal saga will be looking to repeat last year’s success in Costume Design and Special, Visual & Graphics Effects. It will face the Scott Free/Hardy Son & Baker drama in both categories as well as Photography & Lighting: Fiction and Sound: Fiction.
