Rachel Summers

On This Day 40 Years Ago, One of the Strongest X-Men Ever Became an Omega‑Level Threat
Image
On August 6, 1985, Rachel Summers, the daughter of Scott Summers and Jean Grey from an alternate universe, fused with the powers of the Phoenix Force in Uncanny X-Men #199. This not only made her one of the most dangerous entities in Marvel’s history but also turned her into an Omega-level threat.

Over the many decades since the introduction of the X-Men in the Marvel Universe, they have managed to blow away the minds of the readers through sheer unreal displays of powers and strength. And in that regard, Summers did not disappoint, especially with her complete bonding with the Phoenix Force, an entity of immense power that cursed both her mother and the Jean Grey of Earth-616.

The Phoenix Force Made Rachel Summers a Cosmic Threat in Uncanny X-Men #199

10 Awesome Marvel Characters X-Men: The Animated Series Did Nothing With
Image
Despite its success in depicting many beloved X-Men characters and Marvel villains, some significant figures were markedly underutilized by X-Men: The Animated Series. X-Men: The Animated Series is often hailed as one of the greatest adaptations of Marvel Comics. It brought iconic storylines to life, from the Dark Phoenix Saga to Days of Future Past, and introduced a generation to the mutant team’s struggles for equality. Yet, some awesome Marvel characters were overlooked or barely featured in this legendary series.

The creators of X-Men: The Animated Series had the monumental task of condensing decades of comic book lore into an accessible format for Saturday morning audiences. With time constraints, budget limitations, and a primary focus on the core X-Men team, many characters were left on the cutting room floor. While favorites like Wolverine, Rogue, and Storm received substantial screen time, several pivotal comic characters either made cameo appearances or were squandered.

Excalibur Series Rumored To Be In Development At Marvel Studios
Image
We've been hearing that there might be plans to introduce Captain Britain to the MCU at some point, but it sounds like Brian Braddock could make his debut as part of his England-based superhero team.

According to scooper Mttsh, an Excalibur series is in development at Marvel Studios.

Created by writer Chris Claremont and artist/co-writer Alan Davis, Excalibur debuted back in the late '80s, and were conceived as an off-shoot of the X-Men. The original line-up consisted of Captain Britain, shapeshifting Elemental Meggan Puceanu, and three former members of the X-Men: Shadowcat, Nightcrawler, and the second Phoenix, Rachel Summers.

Captain Britain and MI13 replaced the ongoing title in 2008, with Claremont penning another Excalibur series. This had nothing to do with the original team, however, and focused on the efforts of Professor Charles Xavier and his former nemesis Magneto to rebuild the mutant homeland of Genosha.

The current...

Marvel Admits an X-Men 97 Hero's Costume Doesn't Make Sense (& Never Has)
Image
Forge's half-pant cybernetic leg design in X-Force #1 continues to puzzle fans- Skottie Young's variant cover points out this oddity. Forge stands out in X-Men history with his peculiar design aesthetic- new adventure in X-Force #1 will feature even more unique elements. Despite the perplexing choice of half-pants, Forge's metallic leg remains his defining feature among the X-Men- recognition guaranteed.

The X-Men have had numerous costumes, but one member of the X-Men '97 team doesn't make very much sense. Forge is recognizable in part due to his red bandana and metallic right leg. However, the designs surrounding his cybernetic leg have always been a little bit bizarre - a fact Skottie Young has pointed out in a variant cover for the upcoming X-Force #1.

X-Force #1 (2024) has the creative team of Geoffrey Thorne, Marcus To, Erick Arciniega, and Joe Caramagna. It brings together Rachel Summers, Betsy Braddock, Forge, Sage, Tank, and Surge on its mutant roster.

X-Men's Kitty Pryde Is Finally Being Allowed To Explore Her Sexuality
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for Exceptional X-Men #1Queer identity and politics have been an integral part of the X-Men mythos for nearly 50 years. Still, for much of that time, this queerness was relegated to subtext and fan headcanons. Thankfully, in recent years, a major increase in LGBTQ+ representation at Marvel Comics has seen beloved heroes like Iceman, Magik, and Kitty Pryde confirmed as queer. While Kitty's queerness was canonized during the Krakoan Age, her new starring role in Exceptional X-Men may finally allow the beloved hero to explore her sexuality.

After the fall of Krakoa and Kitty Pryde's murderous time spent as Shadowkat, Kitty decides to formally leave the X-Men and move back to Chicago... where she has begun trying to live a "normal" life as a bartender.

Even Marvel Admits Cyclops' Daughter Is Only in The X-Men's New Era Because of Who She's Dating
Image
X-Men's newest era will feature Rachel Summers due to her connection with Captain Britain, not her lineage. Characters from alternate timelines were initially sidelined, but Rachel was allowed in X-Force due to her bond with Betsy Braddock. The X-Men relaunch focuses on the present, excluding characters tied to past events unless a strong relationship justifies their presence.

The X-Men's newest era will feature Cyclops' daughter, Rachel Summers, but not because she was a front runner for the team. Tom Brevoort, executive editor for the X-Men: From the Ashes relaunch, has revealed details about her inclusion. On Substack, the Marvel creator revealed his preference and criteria for the X-Men and how Rachel was allowed to be a part of it through association.

Rachel Summers has had a long history in Marvel Comics, having debuted in 1981 in Uncanny X-Men #141. The daughter of Cyclops and Jean Grey, Rachel has gone by several codenames and role-shifts,...

X-Men ’97 Season 2 Will Feature New X-Teams: Here Are a Few Options From the Comics
Image
X-Men: The Animated Series and X-Men ’97 partially owe their success to their ability to streamline the knotty and wild world of Marvel’s mutants. While lots of characters show up for cameos and arcs, both series focus on a team of 8-10 members. But for X-Men ’97‘s second season, executive producer Brad Winderbaum plans on going a bit bigger.

“There’s many teams, in Marvel, that have the letter ‘X’ that are followed by a hyphen,” Winderbaum said during a Q&a with Comic Book (via Collider). “I would put it to you like this… there’s two other X-teams in season two.”

Who are those two other teams? Winderbaum doesn’t say, but we can take a few educated guesses about who could show up in X-Men ’97 season two and how they would change the dynamic of the show.

The X-Men Multiverse Comic Book You Need To Read After Deadpool & Wolverine
Image
In "Deadpool & Wolverine," the first half of that duo (Ryan Reynolds) jokes that the Marvel Cinematic Universe's "Multiverse Saga" isn't really working. Does that mean Marvel Studios is switching course? Probably not, if the forthcoming "Avengers: Secret Wars" is any indication.

The MCU has largely been using the concept of infinite worlds as metatext about different superhero movie franchises. "Deadpool & Wolverine" is about how Deadpool wants to be a hero worthy of the Avengers -- a transparent representation of how Disney acquired Wade's previous owner, 20th Century Fox. Sony's "Spider-Verse" films are at least a tad more creative, using different universes to represent different animation styles.

As a comic fan, it's a bit surprising that Marvel has embraced the multiverse. That storytelling device has always been more DC's thing, going back to 1961's "The Flash of Two Worlds". There is one exception to that rule: the X-Men,...

Marvel Comics Did The Terminator's Story First
Image
You don't need all your fingers to count the Marvel Comics stories more influential than "X-Men: Days of Future Past."

In the dark future of 2013, America has been conquered by the mutant-hunting Sentinel robots. Most of the X-Men are gone, mutants live in concentration camps, and the world stands on its nuclear brink as the other nations prepare to strike against the Sentinels. To prevent this apocalypse, X-Woman Kate Pryde travels back in time.

You see, things went to Hell on Halloween 1980. Mystique and her Brotherhood of Evil Mutants assassinated anti-mutant Senator Robert Kelly, intent on showing humanity they will supplant them as the Cro-Magnon did the Neanderthal. Instead, this event inflamed anti-mutant sentiment and led to the Sentinel takeover. If Kelly isn't assassinated, maybe this awful future will never happen.

"Days of Future Past" was Byrne's penultimate story on his original "X-Men" and he goes with a banger.

X-Men ’97 Episode 10’s Ending Cameos Just Set Up a Huge Season 2 Story
Image
This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.

Well, X-Men ’97‘s finale didn’t end with Onslaught or Ultimatum (thank goodness), but it did go out with quite the bang. The heroes stop Bastion’s assault with the help of Jean Grey’s Phoenix Force, depowering Mister Sinister at the same time. Although the battle sends Asteroid M crashing toward the Earth, Professor X appealed to Magneto’s better angels once again and convinced him to prevent a global catastrophe, apparently killing himself and the X-Men in the process.

But, as Bishop tells Forge, “This ain’t our first time at the ‘X-Men are Dead’ rodeo.”

Sure enough, the final minutes of the finale confirm the X-Men still live, albeit in very different times. With half the team in ancient Egypt and the other half in a ravaged far future, they have their work cut out for them in season two.

X-Men ’97’s Latest Twist Ending Just Set Up a Terrible X-Men Story

“Tastes like chicken.” If that phrase brings to mind the evil mutant the Blob chowing down on the Wasp’s corpse, then the ending of X-Men ’97‘s eighth episode, “Tolerance Is Extinction Part One,” should send shivers down your spine.

The X-Men's First Mutant President Paid Off Decades of Queer Subtext in 1 Key Friendship
Image
Kitty Pryde was coded to be queer in X-Men, with her true love intended to be her best friend Rachel Summers by creator Chris Claremont. Claremont's vision for Kitty as the first mutant President of the US with a sapphic First Lady was explored in X-Men: The End trilogy. Despite being relegated to an alternate world, Claremont believes Kate and Rachel's romance is essential to their characters' future.

Throughout her history on the X-Men, Kitty Pryde was often coded to be queer, and her co-creator Chris Claremont was able to add to this legacy in a story that saw the former Shadowcat elected president. In the trilogy of miniseries, X-Men: The End, Claremont had the opportunity to flesh out his ideal finale for Kitty, who now goes by Kate in current comics. He envisioned Pryde as the first mutant President of the United States, with a queer First Lady waiting in the wings.

Nightcrawler Wasn't the Only Mutant Whose Origin Story Chris Claremont Had A Wild Idea For
Image
According to Chris Claremont, when he introduced her in Days of Future Past, Rachel Summers was originally meant to be the offspring of Jean Grey and the Phoenix Force. Claremont's planned Rachel's origin would have had far-reaching consequences for the X-Men and the Marvel Universe, though ultimately, the official canon version remains that Cyclops is her father. Claremont's even more groundbreaking idea, for Nightcrawler's true parentage, eventually made its way into canon over forty years after the author originally made it subtext in his vaunted Uncanny X-Men run.

Legendary X-Men writer Chris Claremont's groundbreaking idea for the true parentage of Nightcrawler finally became canon over forty years after he first teased it – though as it turns out, that was just one of several wild ideas he had for mutant characters' origins. All The Marvel Comic Easter Eggs In The X-Men '97 Trailer, Ranked By Nerdiness
Image
"X-Men '97" is bringing the marvelous mutant heroes back to the small screen like they never left it, picking up right after the original series finale, "Graduation Day." Since that aired, the show's '90s setting has gone from contemporary to period piece.

The long-awaited trailer for "X-Men '97" debuted on February 15, 2024, and there's plenty to discuss even with less than 2 minutes of footage. For one, we've now finally seen the series' animation style, which brings modern shading and three-dimensionality to the original's classic cartoon look.

Much of the original voice cast is back (even if they only get a line each to show it), while Ray Chase and Matthew Waterson sound uncanny as Cyclops and Magneto. I'll admit I've been skeptical of "X-Men '97" before now — I've never been a huge fan of the original (the production values were quite low and often off-putting). Plus, the X-Men's world is so vast,...

X-Men '97 has the advantage of adapting Marvel Comics storylines that would be challenging for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The reboot can explore omitted or post-original series stories and be more effective than the MCU in terms of narrative. The release of the X-Men '97 trailer hints at the continuation of the original series' impressive legacy, teasing several possible stories to be explored.
