Freedom's Path is a brutal Civil War drama about the horrors of slavery, an unlikely friendship, and the courageous few who risked death to run the Underground Railroad, a secret network that shepherded escaped slaves to the northern states. The film, gut-wrenching at times with its unflinching portrayal of racial oppression, regrettably treads into melodrama as characters stay rigidly defined to support the narrative's agenda. Pacing also becomes an issue as excessive flashbacks and an overly stylized approach stretches an already long runtime. That said, its powerful themes and unvarnished truth lessens the flaws for a worthwhile viewing experience.
In the Deep South, Union soldier William (Gerran Howell) marches with his regiment toward battle in a fog-shrouded forest. He wonders aloud to his best friend if he can actually kill another man. Lewis (Harrison Gilbertson) scoffs at his reticence. They'll make short work of the enemy. The newly enlisted men...

There’s something to be said about films centered around slavery and/or the fight towards freedom. There’s always an embedded trauma no matter how uplifting or positive a spin the story takes. For Black moviegoers, there’s an unwritten consensus that viewers are no longer in need of these types of stories. Or, at least, these audiences would rather see themselves in fun action movies or even rom-coms. Yet, these narratives continue to get made, oftentimes by white filmmakers. It's easy to point one’s finger at first-time feature director Brett Smith and simply ask, “Why?” But Freedom’s Path, which showed at the San Diego International Film Festival, has been 12 years in the making — seven years after the debut of his short film of the same name.

Back in October 2019, before the pandemic, we brought you news about American Civil War movie Freedom’s Path.
The feature, which charts the friendship between a Union soldier and a runaway slave who is helping facilitate the Underground Railroad, stars Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting), Rj Cyler (Me And Earl And The Dying Girl) and Gerran Howell (Catch 22). Post-production has just wrapped.
As it turned out, the project would mark the final stops on the journey of two veteran actors who died while the movie was in post-production: Thomas Jefferson Byrd, a frequent Spike Lee collaborator, and New Orleans native Carol Sutton, both of whom had supporting roles.
Both actors died in sad circumstances. Tony-nominee Byrd was murdered in Atlanta and Sutton died of complications from Covid.
Today, the production has chosen to release two images of the admired actors in their final film, marking the first official stills from the movie.
