(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, it's time to take a look at the bone-crunching brutality of the extended hallway sequence in Gareth Evans' "The Raid: Redemption.")
There has never been one "right" way to film action. Hong Kong cinema has obviously made its mark on multiple generations of directors and 1980s filmmaking may have popularized the musclebound, quasi-superhero lead who can take even more punishment than they dish out. (Don't worry, we will absolutely get around to "Die Hard" in this column at some point.) In more recent vintage, you have the frenetic, shaky-cam chaos of the "Bourne" movies that somehow managed to coexist along with the almost balletic precision of "John Wick."

If you’ve never seen or heard of The Raid, you need to here to go directly to LoveFilm and rent it or to Amazon to buy it because it’s one of the greatest martial arts movies you’ll ever see! Directed obscurely by Welsh Director Gareth Evans, the first movie sees a group of cops raid a building trying to get to the top to oust the biggest baddest crime lord you ever did see! It has some of the best practical stunts we’ve ever seen and is well worth your time.
The sequel has the title The Raid 2: Berandal and sees Evans return as director alongside Tegar Satrya and Yayan Ruhian who star. We’re hoping to see the movie hit UK cinemas 2014 and will have a release date for you as soon as we get it.
In the meantime, here’s the ass-kicking trailer for the second installment!

As promised, the first teaser trailer for Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2: Berandal has roared onto the internet a little earlier than expected. courtesy of Twitch. The brief, visceral sizzle reel is our first glimpse of the Welsh filmmaker’s sequel to 2011’s The Raid: Redemption, which will see him reunite with Indonesian star Iko Uwais for more cringe-inducing action.
Here’s the trailer in all of its intriguing glory:
Picking up precisely where its predecessor left off, The Raid 2: Berandal will follow our vigorous protagonist Rama as he goes undercover in order to infiltrate a ruthless Indonesian crime syndicate. In the footage, Uwais’ character is confined to a prison cell, honing his skills against a chalk figure in a similar fashion to Oh Dae-Su from Oldboy. The plot itself is set to expand upon the simple premise of its predecessor —which took place within the claustrophobic corridors of...

An hour and a half earlier than promised due to overwhelming demand, the teaser trailer for Gareth Evans' The Raid 2: Berandal - arguably the most anticipated action movie of next year - is now online, thanks to the lovely chaps at TwitchFilm, and it rocks. It's a true teaser, giving us a basic and very intriguing set-up. Iko Uwais' supercop, Rama, survivor of The Raid, is now sitting in a prison cell. How he got there, or why, remains a mystery, but he certainly doesn't look happy about it - as he demonstrates in no uncertain terms by punching the crap out of a silhouette on the wall.As he does so, we get brief flashes of just some of the colourful characters that Rama will meet, greet and in all likelihood grind into meat on his murky journey into the underbelly of the Indonesian crime scene.

Welsh writer-director/Indonesia resident Gareth Evans burst onto the world stage in a blaze of badass glory in 2012 with the martial arts action epic The Raid: Redemption. The fast-paced and stunningly violent feature won enthusiastic reviews from such illustrious festivals as the Toronto International Film Festival, Sundance, New Directors/New Films, and SXSW. As critics and action-movie fans cheered, English-language remake and sequel were promised before the film even made its theatrical debut! Earlier this year, Evans took to Twitter to unfurl some much-anticipated plot details about his sequel. He revealed the story of The Raid 2: Berandal would begin just two hours after the brutal and bittersweet end of the first film, with Rama (Iko Uwais), Bowo (Tegar Satrya) and Wahyu (Pierre Gruno) finding a new world of trouble. Considering "berandal" translates loosely to gangsters, expect more insane gunplay and mind-boggling martial arts. In the thick of production, Evans...

Back in February, we reported that Sony Pictures acquired the rights to a sequel for the popular action-thriller The Raid: Redemption. We haven't heard much about this follow-up, entitled Berandal since then, except that Gareth Evans is returning to direct. Yesterday, the filmmaker teased new details regarding Berandal through his Twitter account, revealing the story will take place just hours after The Raid: Redemption's ending, and that production is scheduled to take place very soon.
Ok Raid 2 tidbit, we start shooting on January 19th and the first scene takes place 2hrs after the first film ends.

Iko Uwais is believed to reprise his role as Rama in Berandal, although no further casting details have been revealed. With a production start date just weeks away, hopefully more details will be unveiled regarding this action-packed follow-up.

The Raid: Redemption aka Serbuan maut
Written and Directed by Gareth Evans
Indonesia, 2011, imdb
For the martial arts aficianados out there, don’t even bother reading this review, just go to the theatre now. The Raid: Redemption is everything that you have heard it is and more. Offering a rare glimpse of the Indonesian martial art style Pentjak Silat, the film is one long, almost continuous combat sequence, with all the fights performed at mach speed by a stunt team that make Tony Jaa’s unit look like conservative wimps. Many of the fights are done with one or both fighters holding knives, but if anything they fight faster with knives than with empty hands.
Don’t ask, just go.
*****
Ok. Everyone else, let’s talk about Roger Ebert, who has eviscerated this film not once, but twice, first giving it one star and then expanding his original review in...
